Calcio Finances

An interesting article I found on Goal.com: http://www.goal.com/en-us/news/86/it...calcio-rebuild

What i found most interesting is that we sit here and wonder where all our teams money went. When in reality there are things we aren't necessarily considering such as using the San Siro or saving money for next year when our TV kickbacks drop. All the while European clubs will soon need to be profitable to not receive reprimand from UEFA. This will be an interesting dilemma which plays out over the next couple of years. What are opinions of people o n this forum? I'm curious to hear....

I think Berlusconi & Galliani have always been one step ahead of the rest of the directors in Europe. Stupid decisions on the market or not, they are definitely not lacking in intelligence, especially when it comes to business and marketing terms.

I think in a few years when these rules apply, Milan (and the Germans) will return to be the team in Europe with the most funds to spend and will return to domination. But thats just me.

I think we should remember that the reason Milan is 10th on this list is that we weren't in the Champions League in the 08/09 season.

We lost at least 25 million euros because of that, but more probably our revenue was decreased by something like 40-50 million euros, in which case we would have been right behind Chelsea on this list, and ahead of Liverpool (not to mention that we could probably have kept Kaká).

That being said, we should definitely aim for the top 5.

The problem for the Italian sides is, as goal.com pointed out, that they don't own their own stadiums. I recently went to a German stadium, and everything was new, slick and efficient. Of course they are going to attract more people to their games than the Italian sides.

Calcio's charm is also its curse, in a way, because while we all love that Italian football has kept its "soul" to a much greater extent than the Spanish, English and German leagues, this also means that the league is not as attractive as a commercial product.

In addition, we are still feeling the effects of Calciopoli, which definitely reduced Serie A's attractiveness when it comes to sponsors and TV deals.

Still, I think things could turn around. We just have to cross our fingers and hope that Italy gets to host Euro 2016, as that would mean new and/or refurbished stadiums.
