Chelsea was paying same amount of money for "nobody's", especially nobody's comparing to Shevchenko. It's like selling Aston Martin for same money others are selling Toyota's and Hyndai's. It makes one pretty much a bad seller if not even an idiot.
I think you might be wrong.
At the time when Chelsea bought Shevchenko he was their most expensive signing ever. And the most expensive transfer of all that season (according to Transfermarkt).
Players like Ibrahimovic, Aguero, Van Nistelrooy, Tevez went for less the same season. Players like Torres, Robben, Ribery, Henry went for less even 1 year after.
If I'm not wrong Chelsea did not sign anyone more expensive until 4 years later when they signed Torres from Liverpool.
At the time when Real Madrid bought Kaká he was the most expensive player in history, only to be well beaten by Cristiano Ronaldo later that same summer.
He went for approximately twice as much as players like Benzema, Xabi Alonso, Mario Gomez, Tevez that same season.
But I can agree that it hurt at the time and that I felt we should have got even more for them, of course.
