View Full Version : UCL Final - Milan vs. Liverpool... Athens, May 23rd
And I was interested to read in this forum that a few posters were saying that Milan tend to run out of steam after 70 or so minutes in a game. I don't know if that is linked to the age of the Milan team or not.
I don't think it's solely an age thing, although it might be a factor for some players. The main reason i think this happens is due to the disrupted pre-season training because of the match fixing scandal. Alot of players hardly had any rest time after the World Cup and because of a serious lack of strengthening to the squad, they didn't have an opportunity to recharge themselves.
Next season it should be alot different with new players to encourage more rotation and a full summer for resting and proper training prepartations.

Especially if we win the CL this year, we are 'spared' from the two pre-season preliminary rounds...

as Jim mentioned, the lack of rest in probably half of our starters and the lack of proper preparation are probably a bigger reason than age for the team to run out of steam in the late stages of the game, although i think that the most difficult moments of that are behind us and the team looks pretty fit now after some good work in the winter break and the results and play are only confirming it.
We've been known as an "old" team for years now, yet we've often been better in the 2nd halves of games than the first, so age while being a factor to some extent is hardly the main one here.
I also think that it has s lot to do with losing motivation and deliberately, but unwisely, stepping off the gas once a game looks secure ... which was the case with the ManU game at OT, but - apart from 15 min at the beginning of the 2nd half - not as much as it was in the return game at SS when Milan had already learned form their mistakes.
Celtic also gave a lot of hope into taking the game to us after the 70th min but since those games were so close - in terms of the scoreline that is - milan never really gave them much space for the entire 90 min of the first game and the whole 120 min of the second game, at least not until we scored the goal in ET.
Also, Milan's preparation for the final will begin on Wednesday with the games vs Catania and Udinese seen as more of occasions to keep the team fit rather than a serious objective, so this will give us a good 2 weeks to prepare for the final and that means that ceratin players will go thru individual training regemes - like Seedorf did for the week before the game vs Bayern at the Arena - to be at their physical best vs Liverpool ... this will/should also take care of any difficulties players might have in the late stages of the game and allow them to be as competitive as possible when the 90th min approaches.
All in all, I wouldn't bet too much on Milan opening their door and inviting Pool in for a goal fest after the 70th min.
Zanetti 'In finale non tiferň Milan'
:) He's #4 after Mancini, Vieira and Moratti, but at least he was a gentleman with his statements.
He said he has many friends in both teams ( Mascherano, Simic, Seedorf, Grimi etc) but ,as Inter player, in the final he simply can't cheer for Milan and he'll be on Liverpool's side. But he said how Milan deserves the final and how it's stupid some people to make unuseful discussions about who's better between Milan and Inter since both teams are some of Europes best.
I don't wanna show off and i know it's hard to believe, but since his first comments i knew Rome 1977 was Pool fan.
It was very easy to spot it actually and i even started writing a post where i wanted to ask him to admit he's a Pool fan, but since we're on the same side for the final match, i decided not to write it here.
And i wasn't 100% sure :)

shows lack of grace and class IMO.
I wonder what Milan players and management would have said if they were asked this same question ... not that there will soon be a reason, just speaking hypothetically.
I bet their answers would have been very, very different ;)

I don't particularly think Benitez is better than Carlo, maybe around equal I'd say.
Last time, Carlo tactically got the better of Benitez overall and I haven't seen Carlo ever coach as well as he has this half of the season, so I'm not too worried there.

both teams should be given the same amount of tickets for their fans.. but it is the neutral tickets/uefa tickets that are free for every one.. in istanbul liverpool fans bought 95% of these neutral tickets.. so i dont think its gonna be in favour of milan.. thats a main reason why im not goin to athens

That is completely not true...
UEFA awards both temas with equal number of tickets(in this case I think it was 9000)other tickets are for sponsors, neutral spectators,VIPs and the National Football Federation.
In 2005 POOL had more supporters cuz...they simply bought a lot of tickets in the black market(they can afford it) and there were speculation that Milan management or Milan supporters sold a great portion of the tickets to POOl fans, don`t know how true is this but 60% of the stadium that night was coverd with red(without the black).

Yes, I guess the disrupted pre-season training would have had an impact. Benitez said the same a few years ago, when we had to come back and start very early (mid summer) in the qualifying rounds of the CL. It really means no rest in the summer, and one's pre-season training camp is disrupted (we often train in switzerland)
Have you already qualified for next season's Champions League?
We have one final game left, on Sunday, against an already relegated team (Charlton) at Anfield. We area relady guaranteed a CL spot - and have been for a few weeks. It is just a matter of will we stay in third or drop into 4th in the Premiership. If we win, we should stay 3rd. If we draw or lose, Arsenal might take 3rd spot.

not sure if this is the right place to air this grievance. But I was disappointed today to come in and find this private message. Seeing as it is so hostile and deliberately sent via PM in order to avoid the moderators seeing it, i think it should be publically shared. I won't disclose the sender's handle (as yet).

EDITED by zlatanov: this is really not the place to post such obscene PMs ... I will take this issue to the admin team and we'll discuss it and see what we'll do.
One thing's for sure, things like that should not happen to begin with.
and btw, that reference to Heysel already gave me an idea who the sender is.
Just ignore this kind of PM's. As a fan of an opponent team it's normal to get them at the beggining but this is a great forum . You have smart, intelligent, interesting and friendly members ( most of them actually). This is by far the best moderated forum on the internet, you can learn a lot here and you'll be accepted as nowhere else fans of rival teams are accepted.
But you'll have to live with these PM's at the beggining ( although i'd still brake every single bone of my "friend" who wished death to my children ). Usually you recieve them from 10-15 years old kids and if you think about it, it's not worthed to lose your sleep over what some 12 years old says !
I havent recieved such PM for more than 10 months , btw :p017:

Hi Tony. I am just getting caught up here, and reading back through the last page or two of posts.
You are right regarding ignoring such PM's. But seeing as it was so nasty, and why do such people spend so long (10 minutes of their lives) wasted on writing such evil comments. But as the person wanted t ohide such a message in private, I like to bring it into the open. The poster in question, from memory, has nearly 800 posts in this forum.
On a different, more positive, topic - good that you caught me on early re being a Liverpool fan! :grinser: I deliberately used the handle 'rome1977' - it was a major clue.

Milan is almost sure to qualify in 3rd or 4th spot in Serie A - same as Pool I guess - as we are 7 pts clear from the team in 5th place with 3 more games to go. But like Pool, we would have to play one qualifying round in order to get into the groups of CL ... unless we win the CL final, of course ... then the winner will be granted directly a place in next year's CL and will not have to start their summer preparations too early.

Actually, i never connected Rome and 1977 with Liverpool. I did find it strange how someone who registers just before the final has "Rome" and "1977" for nickname but i failed to connect it with champions cup final.
What i found extremely strange ( and then it was obvious as you kept writing) was how you completely agreed with every single post where Rafa and Pool were praised ( one of these post was writen by me and you even said it is a great post, something, at this moment, a Milan fan wouldn't have said ), how you enjoyed every anti-ManUtd post ( :) ) , how you commented on Sheva's 120 minute missed chance, how you praised Liverpool players, and most of all - how you labelled Maldini as an old player and you doubted if he was capable to cope with Pool's attack.
No Milan fan would have acted like you did, but every undercover Pool fan would have done exactly that :)

you have Liverpool to thank for that UEFA rule change in the summer of 2005! :grinser:
It is interesting how both Milan and Liverpool are in similar positions in their respective leagues.
Yes, ideally a team wants to avoid those qualifying rounds.
Zlat, are you completely sure the CL winner won't have to play CLQ matches ? It sounds logical and it was a rule in the past ( it happened with Milan in 2003/04 when they finished 3rd but won the CL) , still i'm not sure if it's stil the same rule. I know UEFA made some changes regarding the CL winner's participation if they don't get to be in top4, but i never heard if they changed or didn't change this rule about CL winner not playing Q matches, so i wondered what will happen !
And if that's really the case then both You and Pool will have to say SORRY to Dinamo Bucarest fans. They were guaranteed CL groups stage place, but only in case the winner of this year's CL to get the CL groups spot anyway by finishing first or second in their league.
Now with England or Italy having 3 teams to play directly in group stages, without Q matches, poor Dinamo Bucaresti will have to play Q matches :)

anyways, that doesn't really affect us as what Liverpool did was redefine the rules regarding direct CL qualification for teams that win the CL but finish outside their league's CL qualifying spots.

yeah, I am absolutely sure - even before 2005, if a team were to win the CL but ended up in say 3rd or 4th place in Italy, that team would have been granted direct qualification for nest year's CL ... and no, Milan didn't have to play CLQ after winning the CL for 2003.
What Liverpool did was to make UEFA "tweak" their rules about the situation when the CL winner did NOT manage to finish within the CL spots in their domestic league.
Back then, because the rules had not been clear on that, Pool had to play 3 qualifiers for CL and the EPL ended up with 5 teams playing for CL.
Now the UEFA rules state that the CL winner will play CL no matter what for the following season.
And if that's really the case then both You and Pool will have to say SORRY to Dinamo Bucarest fans. They were guaranteed CL groups stage place, but only in case the winner of this year's CL to get the CL groups spot anyway by finishing first or second in their league.

The fact is, during that first half Rafa got his tactics wrong, which is why we were so dominant. To bring in Hamann and move Gerrard further right was smart, but in the end we still created chances (and had Dudek not pulled off miracles that night, we would have still won).
The 3 goals Liverpool scored I wouldn't actually put down to Rafa either, as it was a complete failure in our side for 6 minutes, after which I don't think they created any decent chances.
Motivation was probably a factor Benitez was important in, but in the end I think Carlo has shown all the managing skills and abilities that Rafa has in their respective careers.

I was think something else though - back then Kaka was playing behind 2 forwards as their playmaker and was lying deeper in midfield.
Now, in Cl we play we Seedorf in the playmaking role while Kaka may still help out in attacking mid but is also played a bit more forward, more like the support striker Sheva once was.
So, I would be dif for Benitez to simply put a ball winner like Mascherano on Kaka as that player would have to track him a bit too deep into his own defensive line and this would create gaps in midfield for players like Seedorf and Pirlo and the rest could profit from.
Similar issues could arise if a defender was put onto Kaka ... basically, there is always the chance that defense and midfield may misunderstand each other and think that the other party is taking care of Kaka.

The Champions League is merely a commercial vehicle. Modern football depresses me, and for me isn't shade on football from decades ago.
Our 2005 CL winning team couldn't hold a candle to the late 70s/early 80s team of Souness/Case/McDermott/Dalglish, etc.

latest stories are that Gerrard will pick up 120,000 pounds a week when he signs this new contract (in the next few weeks). Crazy money.
IIRC Alan Hansen said that the top player at Liverpool was on 1,500 pounds per week when he was there in 1991.
The sad thing is, that it is YOU and ME, and all the other fans, who are having to fork out for these massive salaries.
I'd far rather give my tv company 5 pounds a month (not 48) for the soccer package, and see players *only* get 10,000 pounds per week.

Yep, Milan play a different system now than they did two years ago. Essentially, man-marking rarely works nowerdays, and a solid zonal marking system similar to what we did against United is much more effective as players don't get drawn out of position so easily.
I suspect Benitez will probably use a zonal marking system against so of our key players and look to get men doubled up on them.

when Benitez started used zonal marking in England, he got a lot of stick from tv football pundits, and the media.
But it works so well, that the criticism quickly stopped.

The majority of commentators and pundits on tv are clowns that don't know anything about tactical games outside of traditional English football.
Hansen is one of few I respect, because he knows what he's talking about the majority of the time. Most other BBC pundits aren't terrible, but still old fashioned.
ITV on the other hand are full of people who are simply an embarassment ;)

Actually you're wrong Mr Evil Juventino :D (don't know why I laugh so much calling you that :haha: )
This is generally Milan's ideal starting lineup:
------------Dida (Brazil)-------------
ODDO (ITA)-Nesta(ITA)-P3 (ITA)-Janku (CHE)
--------------Gattuso (ITA)-----------
----Pirlo (ITA)-----------Seedorf (NED)-----
------------------Kaka (heaven)-----------
-----R99 (heaven)---------Gila (Willy Wonka's Chololate Factory :D )
Subs:
Cafu (Brazil)
Gorcuff (FRA)
Bonera (ITA)
Kaladze (ITA)
Ambro (ITA)
Some random useless striker (except Aubemyang (FRA)) (ITA,BRA,)
Pippo (ITA)
Hence if we analytically examine the above there is only ONE Brazilian in the starting lineup Dida. The other two hail from that magical part of out atmosphere that also brought us Adriana Lima and Giselle Bundchen
Compare this with the Arsenal side that at one time had:
Henry, Pires, Wiltord (who replaced Anelka who is also French), Falmini a bunch of french kids on the bench/reserve like Aldaderie AND a French manager???? Wonder if they even drank beer like normal english teams.....how funny would it be if they all went out for wine LMAO!!!

Great move by Galliani. He says that he will give the priority to season-ticket holders to buy tickets to Athens. Great move, so maybe our fans can breathe a bit in Athens this time around.
As a member of MM, I would like to show my appreciation of the fact that fans of opposing clubs to join our forum, and they are very welcome as long as they adhere to the rules here.
Although it is true that some of these fans are annoying (e.g., check out "Man U fan is coming back after 2 years"), some shows mutual respect (e.g. Tony29).

Ok, i see your point ( :haha: ) but i must tell you you forgot Serginho.
And if we compare Milan and Liverpool, you'll see there are many Spanish players , and coach(es), in Liverpool ( Reina, Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso, Arbeloa, Miki Roque <?????> , Rafa Benitez, goalkeepers coach Ochotorena, one scout, one fitness coach and one Physiotherapist )
5 players, 1 coach and 4 stuff members.
Milan has 6 senior players from Brasil (Dida, Serginho, Cafu, Oliveira, Kaka, Ronaldo) 1 primavera player (Diniz Paixao Marcus Plinio), 1 brasilian on loan to Rimini ( Digao, Kaka's brother) , 1 stuff member ( Leonardo...some kind of scout or smthg. He works in Milan foundation)
so, if Pool is Spanish then Milan is Brasilian.
Since Pool is English and Milan is Italian then we should better stop this discussion ASAP :)

I left out Serginho on purpose......he has barely featured for us this year AND he's 35 so that means that he'll most likely retire this season (hopefully :nervous: )
The point is that even though Milan has a lot of Brazilians...we are a decidedly Italian team. Liverpool is like:
----------------Reina(ESP)----------------
--Finnan(IRE)----Charragher(ENG)-- Agger(DEN)--Riise (NOR)
-Sissoko/Macsherano(MAL/ARG)-Gerrard(ENG)-Alonso(ESP)-Kewell/Gonzales(AUS/CHILE)
----Bellamy(WAL)----------------Kuyt (NED)--------
Subs:
Fowler (ENG)
Crouchino (ENG)
Pennant (ENG)
Zenden (NED)
Dudek (POL)
Arbeloa (ESP)
Hyppia (GER)
I don't think this team has an English flavour of say ManU or even Clelsea.

Now is not the time to be complacent. Any team that makes it to the final deserves to be there, and are there because they are the best. It doesn't matter how they compare against other teams who were not good enough.

shows lack of grace and class IMO.
I wonder what Milan players and management would have said if they were asked this same question ... not that there will soon be a reason, just speaking hypothetically.
I bet their answers would have been very, very different ;)
This is the proof what makes the difference between the Merda and the Great Milan management and players. Even Totti will stand behind Milan...also Vieri who watched Milan - MU last Tuesday. I do believe most of the other club players and mangement would support Milan and not Liverpool instead.
Milan has professional players whose brains could think rationally and with total sportmanship rather than the Merda's jealousy and "dirty heart" following their boss, "Dirty Smiled" Moratti and the cunning coach, Mancini.
Just can't wait when next season started on August 28th with Milan and Juve and Lazio on equal start, not to mention Lazio who will sign Marco Amelia for their new goallie to replace Peruzzi.

I'll love it, if we're made out as the under-dogs again.
The reality is that this game is too close to call. Tho from a personal, and no doubt biased perspective, I'd suggest Liverpool have the edge. Liverpool are a much stronger side than 2 years ago. Djimi Traore is gone. The defence is far tighter overall. Reina is a much much better keeper than Dudek. Our midfield is stronger. And offensively, we have far more possibilities to call upon now, with much more width and pace if needed. Also, if you look at Benitez record in Europe with Liverpool, it is far far far better than any other British manager. And I don't mean number of CL won, I mean percentage of home and away games, won and drawn in the CL. The biggest difference, re his fellow Premiership managers, is Benitez's away from home record in Europe. It is staggering. Liverpool very very rarely lose away from home in Europe.
We have essentially a different team from the last final - with only 4 of the players from 2005. Milan, from memory, have 7 or 8 of the same players.
It's ironic when you say that Milan wanted to meet Liverpool - because when the draw for the quarters was made, we hoped to avoid Barca and Chlsea and get Milan instead.
It's ironic when you say that Milan wanted to meet Liverpool - because when the draw for the quarters was made, we hoped to avoid Barca and Chlsea and get Milan instead.
That has almost been always the case for virtually all the team within the last 8.
And you know what happened.
Anyway, regarding liverpool is stronger; well I wouldn't say that Liverpool is weaker now, since I don't see them play and I don't follow them in particular. But having said, I actually don't see how it'll greatly influence the game. When it's the final, the story is entirely different. I certainly hope the best team wins, but luck is part of it, especially in an one-tie game.
BTW, to be absolutely honest, I think that Liverpool would not have gotten through Milan were they play in a 2-league playoff. But in a one-game final, anything is possible.
Finally, I don't look for whether it's chelsea or Liverpool. If you want to win, you win against any team that come across your path. It's virtually useless to say which team one prefers. When it comes to the last 16, there is no weak team.
I must give credit to Liverpool, though, for beating the Spanish Barcelona and Premier-League 1st runner up Chelsea, but whether Liverpool can pull off Milan again, I'm not entirely sure.

you are right, Jeff. In one-off games it is very difficult to call the winner.
For example, we had what seemed like a straightforward fixture against Benfica in the last 16, last season....but we went out.
But I can say that we are a much stronger team than we were in 2005. Milan deliberately attacked our left back last time - Djimi Traore. He is no longer with us. We have a much stronger defence now. And our keeper is one of the best in Europe (Reina).
On that score - I have to say that the Milan keeper Didi looks very weak, in the small number of games that I have seen him in.
Does he lack confidence?

Sweet I know Portstewart, I'm about 2-3 miles from Belfast city centre.
I read how most of football managers, football players and experts rate Milan as (huge) favourites in the final. The last ones in the list are Sir Alex Ferguson and Allesandro Del Piero.
Dunno if that unbelievable performance last Wednesday has anything to do with it, but as time's passing more and more people involved in football see Milan as the new champions of Europe !
Oh, and i almost forgot. I know many will disagree but i find this statement a litle premature :
Seedorf : "If we win then I would like to dedicate the victory to my family, friends and all those who have been part of my career"
I know he said "if we win" , but it still doesn't sound right to me. It's something he should say after the match in case Milan wins.
This way, if Pool wins, i can already see some english journalist or Peter Crouch in his autobiography saying how Milan players started dedicating the CL win to their families even 2 weeks before the final.

I am sure that it has EVERYTHING to do with that game vs ManU at the SS.
When the 1/4 finals came, the only team whose chances for lifting the trophy were worse than Milan's according to just about every self-conceived pundit out there, was PSV, a depleted PSV side that is.
now, everyone is taking what looks like the sure bet so that they don't look like a bare naked butt once again after all the empty talk before the 2nd leg vs bayern at the Arena and that 7-1 result ManU got vs Roma, which made these same experts wonder how many goals more than 3 would Manu score past a team that had been second best to Roma for the whole year.
If it wasn't for that game last Wednesday, I am sure the Bristish press now wouldn't be able to stop praising the soon-to-be champs of Europe, Liverpool ... instead, they are filling up their pages with a wine-nourished romance between Fergie and Carlo and heap hypocritical praise on Milan and how all of a sudden laughing at the Italian grandpas is no longer the vogue among all the Andy Grays out there.
As for Milan, I really don't see anything wrong with what Seedorf said ... if it was any other team Milan was facing, I would be worried about Milan underestimating them and getting a bit too cocky for their own good after that performance vs Man Utd ... but not with Liverpool, not after what happened 2 years ago when cockiness and underestimating the opponent is probably what cost us that final.

Quite right. Milan will have fire in their bellies as soon as they step onto the pitch. They are super-motivated. My worry is actually they may be TOO motivated; that is, they may come in too eager to prove a point.
While it is hard to do so, they should use that night in Istanbul as a motivation but not as a pure vendetta.
With that said, before Italy and France this summer, everyone was talking about how Italy--after the euphoric win against Germany in hitherto Fortress Dortmund--would arrive in Berlin full of ire (revenge for Euro2000) and would feel that they would brush France aside.
The truth is war of words means little. Henry saying that Italians cannot defend, Gerrard launching personal attacks on Gattuso (a depressing low, even by football's standards), or Gattuso's opinion about the way Liverpool play (which, by the way, were not too far off the mark, so perhaps BBC should pay him instead of their usual gambit of clowns), will mean little.
Milan will be fired up because Istanbul still haunts. There is absolutely no risk that Milan players view the Final as a foregone conclusion. And, couple Istanbul with the siege mentality that grips Italian football (Milan's calciopoli verdict, Catania riots, the 7-1 crushing etc.), and you will see a Milan team fired up.
Oh and one more thing: Liverpool players started providing our team talk right after the Final. They blamed the Milan players of celebrating, which, by the way, the English media takes as truth (see Guardian football for proof).
If that didn't happen, oh boy...
I think "IF WE WINS" is much better than Deco's "I prefer to play Arsenal in the final" when they haven't even played the 2nd league against Milan last year. That's what I called immature.

Your cousin is maybe right, but if we have to win only one match before I die, it has to be this one. All the bitterness from Istanbul I have accumulated watching Gerrard lift that cup for two years is going to flow away and it's going to be better than sex, that I can assure you.
It's a matter of life and death this one, WE MUST WIN. And Gerrard has to cry. On his knees.
If we lose this one again I might kill myself or someone else in my immediate vincinity, I will explode and it will not be pretty.
Sorry mate, but you'll never see Stevie cry. He's not that emotional - which might explain why he's capable of doing what he did in Istanbul, and scoring that amazing goal in the FA Cup final last year, in injury time.
I'm not an overly confident fan, but I'm confident about this one. I will enjoy watching Milan play, and seeiing how Rafa's brain works out how to negate Kaka and Seedorf, and Pirlo. I can actually see Gattuso getting a card - maybe yellow, maybe red – and Gerrard being played at the front of a 4-5-1 to push your defence back.
Only one thing is for sure with Rafa Benitez - he will always spring a surprise.

Gattuso getting a card is not much of a prediction ;) ... on the other hand, don't count on him getting stupid yellows in the beginning of this game ... sometimes he maybe too fiery but he is smarter than he seems.
Also, if gattuso gets a yellow, I guess the same would go for most Pools midfield as hard play is the only way they could stop our midfield, so pool players would be quite vulnerable too.
playing Gerrard at the front would be suicidal for Pool IMO and if Rafa makes that move, he would be trying a bit too hard for his own good, I think.
Apart from Alonso, who might be left on the bench as his form this season has been quite average in long spells, Gerrard is just about the only play-making figure Pool have in midfield and the only one who could offer something more than a hope-filled long ball to the strikers.
Playing him up front will make him an easy prey to Milan's midfield and defense and he will be isolated from the game without anyone else being able to take his role of managing Pool's play from midfield.

Actually they do have a lot of creativity in Pennant, Garcia (injured?), and Kewell. Just because these guys aren't as good as Christiano Roanldo means that they can't be potential match winners on their day... especially when you consider that all these guys have to do is get past ONE marker and Crouchino can do the rest....Which brings me to the subject of Crouch....he is a bit of a dirty player....he scored his goal against Trinidad and Tobago this WC by pulling down our defender by his hair  he might be inclined to do something of the sort with Nesta/Maldini/Kaladze :nunu:
Please don't underestimate Liverpool just because their playing style is as exciting as watching dried paint flake...they also have Kuyt who is a master of positioning and Fowler...he didn't get the nickname "god" for nothing!
It is also quite possible that both managers might be overly fearful of the other's superstar and Kaka AND Gerrard might be marked out of the game alltogether!
I wonder if his dad will come to the final.

Garcia is a good, unorthodox player but he is injured and don't think I have read that there is a chance for him to play again this season ... not sure what his injury is about but haven't seen him for quite a while.
I am not underestimating Pool but do think that playing Gerrard too far up front could be an own goal by benitez as Pool's game is heavily dependent on him and how he pulls the strings in midfield.
Also, I really don't rate pennant and gonzalez that much, while Kewell will probably find it difficult to raise his match fitness to the level of a CL final and I doubt benitez will start him after he's been on the sidelines for so long ...
As for Crouch and Kuyt, they will be a real threat up front but I think the way to deal with them, especially with the former, is to cut their supply as short as possible.
I think Milan has everything to win the midfield battle with Ambro being the main difference from last time around when we desperately needed another ball winner in the middle after going 3-0 up but he was out injured, I think.
Also, I think Milan has much more hunger and are more composed and determined this time around given all the difficulties at the beginning of the season and that proving the doubters wrong is a must for us. The loss of several star players - Sheva, Stam, Rui, Crespo - and some of the shine from 2 years ago seems to have actually made the team spirit much stronger throughout the squad.

Garcia is the little magician that we have been missing for months....not domestically so much as in europe. I'd feel a lot more confident if he was in the team. But he's out for the season.
Gonzalez isn't ready yet....he needed this first season to settle, and he has had injuries.
But Pennant is one to watch. He is a SUPERB crosser of the ball. He has laid on many great crosses for goals this season. And he can beat his man with ease. Tho I have to say that Crouch and Kuyt are very slow, by modern day attacking standards.....esp Crouch.
In midfield the battle will be won or lost. I'd imagine Muscherano and Alonso will be in the middle. Gerrard may start right, but essentially have a free role, to go help out and forward. Pennant may be moved over to the left, or else Zenden will be in there. I think it is too late for Kewell to recover sufficient fitness to make the final. (and play on that left side)

Dru is right about Pennant, he may not be be as fast or tricky as Ronaldo but he is still a capable player, and if he gets a yard of space he is one of the best crossers in English football. Often the problem for Liverpool isnt getting the cross right to Crouch, it is Crouch not putting away easy headers
I wouldnt really say Crouch is a dirty player though, he has actually spent most of his career being slammed for being too nice! and not using his height advantage as he probably could in the way guys like Shearer and Duncan Ferguson did (both of whom were shorter than Crouch but far more of a threat aerially)

if there is a winger in pool that I am worried about, that is Zenden ... he has lost of his fame from 7-8 years ago but is a very experienced player and still has some explosive runs left in him ... being that short allows him to be very maneuverable with the ball in his feet.
As for Pennant, I do think janku or oddo will take good care of him and will manage to close him down on the flanks. He is a good, young and talented player but too inexperienced, I think, and more suited to EPL style of play and I think will take more to overrun either one of Milan's full backs, especially when they are supported by either gattuso or Ambro.
Crouch may be slow but is a real threat in the air while kuyt, I don't see him as slow but a very mature and hard-working forward who could be very helpful in the build-up and is very strong in the air and has a nice shot too.

all valid points.
the one that most Liverpool fans would disagree with you on, is Zenden. he is a great lad....superb professional. But he has had a very poor season. And fans could not believe it when he started against chelsea in the first leg of the semi....and were aghast when he started the second leg.
But, given that he has played so little this season, he will have very fresh legs. I sort of see his role as similar to that of Smicer in the 2005 final. He can make a significant impact. But I doubt whetehr he will beat too many down the wing to get a cross in. Dangerous crosses will come from Pennant, if he is on the pitch. Zenden will offer danger if he cuts inside.

kaka is a dif player, more mature and more complete than he was 2 years ago.
back then he was still very mature for his age - 22/23 yo - but now he spends far less time on the ball and puts himself in much greater service to the team's cause. he no longer needs acres of space to change the game around.
marking such a player would be very dif, not to say impossible as it is much easier to isolate a player if he is too individualistic in his approach and spends too much time with the ball without acknowledging his teammates (Kaka several years ago or C. Ronaldo).
Also, kaka now plays drawn further up the field, more as a support striker than the pure midfielder he was in the 2005 when milan were playing mostly with 2 strikers up front. Back then it was easier to designate one ball-winning midfielder to mark him out of the game but now it would be a dif story as he is as much as a forward as he is an attacking mid.

The first time a self proclaimed great team gets 6 pieces in their net it's fun , then...behhh..... it's a déjŕ vu, something we've seen in the past and not so interesting anymore. No need to celebrate Inter's failures, imo.
This is the 3rd time Inter is conceding 6 goals in one match in last 6 and a half years
6-1 by Parma on November 29, 2000 in Coppa Italia
6-0 by Milan on May 12, 2001 in serie A
6-2 by Roma on May 9, 2007 in Coppa Italia final
6:1-6:0-6:2 , it's like watching Federer in Wimbeldon 1st round against some anonimous.
There is one member in forza-Inter who said it all :
No matter what and no matter who is absent, teams like Milan, Juve, Real, Barca etc. don't concede 6 goals in a cup final.
This is shameful, and this is why we are not a big club.
And Roma fans were really fast to dedicate this pic. to maestro Mancini aka mr. Six :

doesn't matter. it's not how the fans or the media perceive liverpool that will decide the game.

exactly.
It's ironic when you say that Milan wanted to meet Liverpool
I never said that. i just said that given a choice between the big teams, I would rather Milan face Liverpool as they would be the easiest team to play. However, what I think doesn't count as clealry, Milan will not be underestimate Liverpool, and Liverpool don't deserve to be underestimated.

these comments are kinda lame milancelotti. tone it down, as personal attacks on forums do show a high level of immaturity. liverpool is not a club to be "hated" - a rival yes, but they shouldn't be hated.
now inter on the other hand... :devf:
roma1977 hasn't been an obnoxious twit like koku. give respect and receive.
Bottom line is, if Milan play better than Liverpool, they will win - if not, then we should be classy and applaud a rival who was able to defeat our team. Did you see Paolo Maldini after van Buyten scored against us in the first leg of the QF? Was he whining and yelling that he hates Germans and Bayern? He had a smile on his face, and shook hands with the Bayern players - even though the late tying goal was a morale sapper. I'll be devastated if Milan lose to Liverpool again, but I will hand it to them for beating us fair. They are not Juve, after all, who need the help of a bunch of refs ;)

I think I remember that day. We really had grandpas defense back then. Pietro Vierchowood, Baresi's last year.
But Tony, that doesn't count does it? 'cause Moggi was in-charge .. and the referee .. was it de sanctis? .. :5ok:

Off topic, but tonight Inter took the opportunity to remind us that they're still good old Inter. :D
They are not Juve, after all, who need the help of a bunch of refs ;)
I really don't want to take this off topic because this is one of the most interesting threads on MM in my time, but don't you guys think it's a hypocrisy Milan fans to constantly make fun of Juve getting the help from the refs or calling Juventus JuBe ( smthg in all honesty never happened here but is a practice on some other places) ?
Afterall, Milan got -30 last season and -8 this season because they were helped by the refs and Milan also played in serie B...twice !
You're condemning Juve, while the stated basis for the criticism is the breach of a rule which also applies to Milan.
Ok, it's still better then some Juve fans ( read : 13 years old kids) calling Inter-Binter, but in my book what some of you are doing is also hypocrisy.
umm.... I just doubt you'll find an answer :)
Alright alright, you'll find one :D
April 6, 1997, Milan-Juventus 1:6
Milan did have a very strong team on paper : Baggio, Savicevic, Maldini, Baresi, Desailly, Boban, Reiziger, Tassotti, Vierchowod, Sacchi as manager, but they had an off day and were beaten by Zidane, Vieri, Jugovic and co.
@ganjarb : Baresi and Vierchowod were maybe old but were still younger than Maldini or Cafu today. It had nothing to do with Milan having an old defense ( afterall, Maldini was 28 and he was there, while Reiziger and Desailly weren't old eather) and it certanly had nothing to do with Moggi.... it was just a great day for the current european champions and a very bad day for Milan.
Something like Manchester Utd- Roma.
No way ManUtd are so much stronger than Roma, but it still happened !

these comments are kinda lame milancelotti. tone it down, as personal attacks on forums do show a high level of immaturity. liverpool is not a club to be "hated" - a rival yes, but they shouldn't be hated.
now inter on the other hand... :devf:
roma1977 hasn't been an obnoxious twit like koku. give respect and receive.
They are not Juve, after all, who need the help of a bunch of refs ;)
thanks Nadir for the post....appreciated.
Yes, the beautiful game should be based around respect. And as two of Europe's finest clubs (you've won the European Cup 6 times, and we've won it 5), we definitely both deserve a high level of respect.
I can't wait to the final comes along - altho I just hope my heart can cope (especially after that last final in 2005!)

I hate opposition fans also, and I'm 38 years old, not a teenager. IMO a team forum should be for fans of that team only, period.
Oppostion fans just come to bla bla bla while in fact they have zero respect for Milan, their so called respect is just an act, in their minds they ridicule us and wish us to lose 20-0, they're the attention seekers, why else would someone register on an ENNEMY forum and start to taunt and bla bla bla about the greatness of their team, especialy Lucky 6 minutes Loserpool who then brags in his own forum he is fooling the silly Milan retards by going undercover in their forum, unless they have a superiority complex? it's just like someone who comes inside your home uninvited and starts to spit on your wive and kids... I can't wait for the season to be over, at last then only Milanistas are around here (I don't count the Juventino that is part of the furniture)
I hate Inter, you have no idea how much after Calciopoli, but I don't register on their fan forums to have a go at them, I have honor. And that is true respect, even for my ennemies.
I don't even want a reply on this, let me be the voice of the silent majority but who is scared to be banned.

I used to hate opposition fans too, until some started to register here and acted like decent, intelligent human beings who could see past their own teams and were willing to participate in normal, calm discussions and debates. Those first pioneers, if you will, opened my eyes ot the fdact that opposing fans could indeed be good posters here. If you don't like it, then I strongly suggest you avoid any topic where any of said people are posting, it's as simple as that. In this day and age, I think many of us find that we can't wear blinders and look only at our team and talk only about our team. Our team has to think about their opponents and in fact prepare for them. We as fans need to do the same.
And FYI, any opposing fans who come here only to cause trouble get banned as soon as their intentions are apparent. Perhaps you don't know or see everything that goes on here. :5ok: And that would include the debates the mods have had about opposing fans registering here.

I feel you baby but there are a few things we should keep in mind. Being a supporter of a team is not always an indicator of the type of person they are. For instance the we label inter fans as losers and juve fans as cheats...but this is more often the exception rather than the rule. Look at Tony29 and Karim. Both are very respectful and contribute intellectualy to the forum. They come here and have fun with us and give us the perspective of someone who doesn't see every think in black and red like we do. :5ok: . Conversely we have to admit that there are some dumbass milan fans as well :bri:
I agree with you in not joining a forum of rival fans. To me that is disrespectful to our own club. I'd never join a juve forum or worse an inter forum :yuck: but this is our personal opinion on how real Milan fans are to behave. As long as they're not hurting Milan we are in no position to judge anyone.
I hate Inter too with a huge passion. But we must be careful that our hatred isn't mis-directed. It is no fault of the Inter fanbase that they are so despicable- blame the management. The same goes for Juve. Perhaps there are fans who hate us Milan fans too.....but what did we ever do to them?? Maybe its some dumb decision taken by Gallaini/ Braida/ Berlu/ Leonardo.
I am a moderator in goal.com and I'm the captain of the Milan forum. We're allowed to do anything there....I don't bother my boys there about insulting other teams' fans because that is what keeps a healthy rivalry going. I only set in when the insults become personal or if we strike at them unprovoked.
But we should keep in mind that deep down we're all family and that fotball is still only a game. With things such as race, class, religion and sex causing so much division/ hate it is a shame to use the beautiful game to produce even more hatred ;)
I know this is a cliche' ending but peace :respect:
And I was a moderator and then admin of Xtratime, which if you know the forum is made up of fans from MANY other teams....and MANY do alot of cross-posting. If it can be done on one forum like that, I see no reason why it can't happen here. Perhaps you'd like us to drop the Milan International forum along with banning non-Milan fans who belong here? Please, don't be quite so colloquial. Next you'll say the only real Milan fans are those who IN Italy...

Ok, since you are a moderator at goal.com, I have a question. Why on earth do the people who post there address the players directly?
I will post an example that I have just come up off the top of my head, but in reality there is not much difference.
Eto'o linked with Derby County
Barcelona hitman has been sensationally linked with a move to Derby County.
"I have always liked Derby County, and let's not forget the weather there," said Eto'o with a wry smile aimed at Rijkaard.
The news will come as a shock to Barca fans, who view the Cameroonian as an integral part of their team.
Watch this space.
Replies:
This news is stupid. Please. Eto'o will stay and we will get Henry, Adriano, Robben, Shevchenko, and Mourinho. So Eto'o don't go to Derby.
Jordi, Catalonia
No Eto'o...stayyyyyyyyyyyyyy...we neeeeeeeeeed you.....Forca Barca
Mo, Egypt
Eto'o will stay at Barca because Barca are the best team in the world and Rijkaard is a great coach and because Barca are the best team in the world . So Eto'o please stay!?
Saad, Karachi
Yes Eto'o go to Derby! Vamos Real!

.......er....er..how the hell should I know? :dontkn: keep in minf thought that those are not forum comments...they are messageboard comments. you don't have to be a registered user to post that stuff so naturally the quality of posting would bel lower that what is found in the actual forum. :5ok:

I have no issues with the quality of posts; I am not a snob.
I was just wondering why every article at the bottom has posters going to the extent to even talking to the players. It's just bizarre, and far more prevalent than to be just one of those things.
"Gila please leave Milan" and "Ronaldo I love you" etc. yes I have seen you post that, but I am talking about people whose entire output consists of a monologue delivered for the benefit of the player in question.
I just thought it was part of the board culture and the protocol.
Anyway, I digress.

why do you post so much hate? You and Milancelotti are not fans. You're small minded bigots.
Indeed, based on the two awful PM's you sent me yesterday, your behaviour is criminal, in many jurisdictions. You infer dangerous threats, and you boast about how you can never be traced or banned, because you 'change your anonymous server once every 11 minutes'
There is no honour at all in your behaviour. You're an embarrassment to the majority of football fans, be they of Milan or indeed of football in general.
There is a tiny minorty of supporters of all clubs that are like you. We have them at all the various english clubs too, including Liverpool. But thankfully, your type is treated with the total disdain (by the vast majority) that it thoroughly deserves.
You say you're 38 years old. That depresses me.
Now if you don't mind, I'll continue to speak with people in here who I have respect for. You should take a leaf out of the book of people like Debs, zlat, tony and drucurl (to name but a few).

rome, I know it's probably tough but please do try and keep the personal problems out of here (including responding to hateful posts). If you have problems, please contact us (I'm aware you've spoken to mods already).
Pireloke, and anyone else who has complaints about non-Milan fans here. They're as welcome as any of you, so if you don't like it, find another forum where there is a rule to prevent non-Milan fans posting.
First of all, Dru, understand I am not upset with you! It was just a couple comments, like about not joining rival forums and so on. There are many general soccer forums where fans of many teams gather and post, and cross-post in each others forums. Some people are acting like we as milanista shgould go around with blinders on. That would be incredibly foolish, for one thing, and for another, few people here can tell me they don't belong to some other forum or go someplace to talk about other leagues, other teams' players and so on. I'm probably a real minority here b/c this does happen to be the only soccer forum I belong to, for a number of reasons. One being, I had my fill of the asinine jerks at XT a long time ago and I don't care to get back into that particular atmosphere. I belong to no other milan forums b/c...I have Milan Mania, and I just don't feel like dealing with the cliques and the negativity at other Milan forums.
Secondly, this whole situation has re-opened a discussion about private messages and the mis-use and abuse of them, and can things said in a PM be used to take action against a forum member. I've been doing some research and have found a forum for site admins, and right in their terms of use is something we are going to borrow and append. If someone receives a PM that is threatening, rude, crass, etc. and that person comes forward with it, you bet it's going to be admissible.
Now comes the lecture...
There is NO NEED and NO REASON on God's green earth why anyone here needs to think they have the right to be rude, nasty, demeaning or threatening to anyone else who is a registered member here. Absolutely no reason. I don't give a good GD what you find offensive about someone, if they haven't done anything other than post and act decent, then you do not have my permission to be a rude, crude ignoramous to them. That is not in the spirit of these forums and has never been acceptable. That is not the philosophy upon which MM was born and that is certainly not the intended use of any of these subforums or any of the features we allow users here to have--signatures, avatars, custom titles, location and yes, that extends to the optional feature of private messages.
Small minded bigots, rome1977 has said....and you know what? When I read those words my thought was "he hit the nail on the head!" How boring would this place be if we only allowed Milan fans to join? I've already said that you have no idea how many opposing fans who come here only to taunt have been banned immediately. You're right--we have no room for people like that. But understand right now, we will continue to have an open door policy on these forums. And we will also continue to uphold the founding principles that this forum is a place for everyone to feel free to post without fear of being treated badly. EVERYONE who belongs here has that right--to post and feel they will be safe and comfortable here.
Now, as drucurl says, such rude treatment of "outsiders" only drags down the reputation firstly of the forum and secondly of the team.
Lecture over....go in peace... :w221:

Debs, awesome post. I agree totally, the terms and conditions of use of a forum should definitely cover PM's (and any other aspect of the forum e.g. avatars). I don't believe that hate-filled people should have any stone to hide under.
I know myself, that it takes money to find a server/host, and get a site setup. Why should one or two others come in and believe for a second that they have a right to post stuff bordering on criminal activity. They have no right. None whatsoever.
If they want, they can go get their own server, and do what they like on that. They can pollute to their heart's content....poo in their own yard.

a Liverpool fan gettin' some nasty PMs is kinda expected in some sense... so just deal with it privately... no need to reveal them here... that itself shows no honour on your part...
bein' a Milanista myself... it happens that i do get heaps of such nasty PMs myself... yet i simply ignore them... even the mods do not know the contents of which were said...
what said in private should remain in private...
No I really do dislike Gerrard I mean just in recent history Liverpool have had so many players better than him like Owen and Fowler...it's almost sad that he is seen as their hero....This is not to diminish his abilities in any way...but more down to my own personal preferences I'm a bit of a flair junkie :zany:
The other thing i dislike about Gerrard is that he AND Crouch scored very unfortunate goals against Trinidad and Tobago this World Cup  Crouch pulled down one of our defenders by his hair (he himslef admitted it) to score and while Trinidad were chasing the equalizer, gerrard scored from one of his trademark shots :v46: It would please me very much to see them suffer in the final :5ok: Did I mention that Trinidad's colours are also Red and Black (predominantly along with some white) :uhm:

I think sending people nasty PM's is a useless and cowardly thing to do :bri: . If we Milan fans are truly superior to fans of other clubs then there are levels that we simply will not stoop to. Not because other dumbasses do it means it was ever ok or that we have to do it. I can fully understand, however people with a beef slugging away at eachother.....but to persecute someone for supporting another team is simpy barbaric. If we really eliminated all rivals who would we play :wallbang:

with respect, I totally disagree.
Such activity is neither morally or legally permissable.
The dishonour comes from sending such messages, and in those who might try to defend them.
Those who expose and try to deter or eliminate such activity are the ones displaying honour.

LOL yes i recall that hairy goal Crouch scored against Trinidad.
I agree re Gerrard. I label him 'Big Engine'. I think that without his massive engine/energy, he is an ordinary player. He is not the super-hero that some make him out to be. But you must remember that the english media will always pump up their own players.
But he is very limited in the centre. He is much more productive when he is allowed a more forward and freer role.

Yeah Gerrards best position is definately the free role behind a striker, and with wingers either side to take away any positional responsibility.
I do think you are downplaying his ability though, undoubtedly his power and engine make him stand out but he is a near complete player regardless. He can score from almost anywhere and with both feet, he is often Liverpools best playmaker and he is certainly the driving force and a real leader.
A lot of his media acclaim comes from the fact that he has often scored extemely crucial goals, the Olympiakos one, the CL final, UEFA Cup final, FA Cup final etc and often those goals are spectacular too. In the same way Giggs will always be remembered for his goal vs Arsenal in the semi in '99, those are the types of goals that legends are built around..

Ever asked yourself why someone sends such PM's in the first place? Especialy those with bait in it so big even a killer whale would find suspicious and not bite? Because I exactly knew what Mr. Liverpool would do... expose private messages in a public forum and thus owning himself big time. He did. As expected. End of story. Or not, he's still here, probably because he didn't get the part where he owned himself just yet :) Anyway we're way OOT now, I won't post about this matter anymore :)

yes, he pops up with very crucial goals - often late on in games. He is both mentally and phsically very strong.
But he isn't the most disciplined player, and that hurts him when he plays in the centre. Rafa has tried to get him to be more disciplined....and has spoken about how Steven needs to conserve energy and make his runs only on certain occasions.
I would not be surprised to see him start on the right in the final....in a free role, where he can get forward and play behind the forward.
In the centre, there has to be tight discipline. Alonso and Mascherano would be my choices.

I am not the person who launches attacks. I cannot do a thing to stop those posts (and PMs) from the two people concerned. That is entirely in your hands (i.e. the MODs).
I do not seek to tell you your job. But I cannot, for a second, imagine that these posts, and PMs, are within the terms and conditions that these two people signed up to, when registering for this forum.
I cannot do a single thing regarding what these two people do, and do not do. Only you can change their behaviour on the forum.
I know that you aren't launching attacks, but I'm asking you to stop replying to them because it's easier to maintain peace here. Believe me, you have every right to feel insulted at some of the comments, and there's been a lot of discussion regarding the matter between mods and admins.
These posts were getting out of hand before and I asked for it to be stopped (I'm hoping you saw that post). Since then other posts have been made and now the situation has escalated.
As for whether this is acceptable posting and not, it is not, which is precisely why Debs and I have posted, to maintain peace and to warn people who are going too far. As for the pm's, we've not actually got any specific rules about pm's as we always preferred to let members maintain that freedom. However, I have read the pm's sent to you and am disgusted at what was written. I assure you, most members definately do not feel the same as the person that wrote them. We know who wrote them, know their history on the forum, know their history on the forum before using their current account and know something has to be done (which it will be).
Funny thing is, people who make these pathetic threats on the net think they can easily get away with it due to "anonymity", so they try to act tough. What they don't realise is they aren't anonymous, and it's very easy for even the most basic hacker to get their details (or at least figure out where they live). There are instances where people have said something they shouldn't on the net and it was read by the wrong people. Usually this results in visits round to the poster's house and not so friendly consequences.
Zz']the difference is that i am the one gettin' "bullied"... not one of the kids that just watch & don't do anythin' to stop it...
If you are being harassed then I suggest you contact a mod or admin and show us what the problem is.

so i was just wondering and wanted to comapre the two teams sinc elast time we met liverpool in 2005 there are the squads...
AC Milan: Dida, Cafu, Maldini, Stam, Nesta, Gattuso (Rui Costa 112), Seedorf (Serginho 86), Pirlo, Kaka, Shevchenko, Crespo (Tomasson 85).
Subs Not Used: Abbiati, Kaladze, Costacurta, Dhorasoo.
Liverpool: Dudek, Finnan (Hamann 46), Traore, Hyypia, Carragher, Riise, Gerrard, Luis Garcia, Alonso, Kewell (Smicer 23), Baros (Cisse 85).
Subs Not Used: Carson, Josemi, Nunez, Biscan.
the people that we dont have currently that played in the match are...Rui costa, Tommason, Sheva, Crespo,stam....the rest we have not including the subs....the new addition that we have....Gila...pippo...gorcuff....i see these 3 as maybe being difference makers...expcet for gorcuff i doubt he will play..
We will have 4 new players in the squad for this final: Oddo, Jankulovski, Ambrosini and Inzaghi....
Enough really is enough...
We will have 4 new players in the squad for this final: Oddo, Jankulovski, Ambrosini and Inzaghi....
And Liverpool will have many "new" players. Dudek, Traore, Hyypia, Luis Garcia and Baros won't play for sure (unless Reina or some of the starting XI defenders get injured), while none of the used subs from 2005 ( Cisse, Hamann and Smicer) is with Liverpool anymore.
7 of those Milan players from 2005 are sure starters and 9 of them are still in Milan while only 4-5 from Liverpool2005 will start the match in Athens.

these childish arguments are the reason i left this forum in the first place. see ya'all next year when I feel like popping my head in once more. goodbye again all! :)
Baros is no longer with Liverpool.
That's why he won't play :)
I wrote the names of the players who won't play in Athens. Some of them due injuries, some due losing the starting place and some because they aren't in Liverpool anymore.
Who is next??? I mean After those temporary loud mouth Celtic FC, Bayern Munich and Man Utd fans how many new Liverpool fans have registered here??? Now its time for some Liverpool fans to feel some pain :5ok:
Note: this dosen't include Mr. Jim_Uk, as he is an old member of MM :)

Speaking of motivations, Milan players will get 200,000 if they win the final.
However, many, if not most, of the players who will start the game in Athens get this type of money for several weeks' pay ... just as a reference point - just read today in gazzetta that Gila's salary is 250,000/month ;)
So, doubt the money will be the main incentive for the big names coming out in Athens in less than 2 weeks' time.
rome1977

i was reading this week of the Liverpool financial incentive....memory is poor, but I think it was 250,000 pounds each IIRC.
But as we know, money means nothing in such a final. One could have all the money in the world, but if your legs are tired, it won't matter.
And motivation works on various levels. I don't think these multi millionaires will be that fazed by money offers. One can only crave so many paradise villas, infinity pools and sports cars, before one loses interest in such trappings.

Maldini...well, what better way to retire than on top?
Kaka...never won the big cheese, and he's peaking at the right time, so he knows he'd better strike now while the iron is red hot.
Dida...he knows he may be granted immunity the rest of his Milan career if, in the match, he reminds the planet why he was once mentioned in the same breath as Buffon.
Max...perhaps his last opportunity to prove why he's Fourth Quarter Ambro (clutch).
Carletto...two CLs as a coach will basically make him the Spielberg of Italian football.
Pirlo, Gila, Oddo, etc...imagine taking home the WC AND the CL in less than twelve months.
Gattuso...his contribution to victory will seal his place in Milan immortality until the end of time. Call him a kitten now, why don't you?
Seedorf...Four CLs. 'Nuff said. Plus, he's gone from Clarence Lazybones to Clarence Busybones at the flip of a switch, and it couldn't have come at a better time.
-If Milan win, Inter's Scudetto will be almost instantly forgotten.
-We got this far without Sheva. Money doesn't buy success, Roman.
-And do we really want Pool to equal our amount of CL trophies won?
-Then there's the impact it would have on Italian football as a whole.
In short: Money, schmoney.

:grinser: Yes, absolutely correct. The motivation will not primarily be money, it will instead be, for many players, all about winning their first ever European Cup.
And even beyond that, what sane person could not give of their best, when in such an environment and watched by a massive worldwide tv audience, as well as a stadium that is filled with 80 or so thousand passionate fans.
I think the major motivation for us during the second leg against Man Utd was the fans, I really do hope that we can match the Liverpool fans this time rather than them putting pressure on us and breathing down our necks.
Maldini...well, what better way to retire than on top?

Plus those who don't wana c Paolo Maldini playing for 2 more season r not AC Milan fans ;) The true fans want him leave football after winning the 18th Scudetto for ACM :p283:
And I'm sure he also knows not to confuse Bobby Charlton with Bobby Moore. ;)
Young ppl confusing Bobby Charlton with Bobby Moore is nothing :) (bcoz both of them played some 40 years ago :d33: ) compared to the confusion OLD PPL make with Cech and dida :googly: by comparing dida :googly: with Buffon. The whole world knows that there is only 1 gk whose name could be mentioned in the same breath as Buffon and that gk is Cech :5ok: & by the way Cech is not a bald-headed giant :wallbang: He is a brave GK ;)
Just remembering that Săo Paulo (brazilian team) is the team that most borned players in this final: Cafú, Fábio Aurélio and Kaká
:respect:
Tony29 and his trivia again :)
1 This is the 5th time in Champions League/Cup history the same 2 teams to play against eachother again in the final. And it's the 3rd time for Milan to play the final against a team they already played against in some other final before.
1955/56 Real Madrid-Reims 4:3 ( in Paris)
1958/59 Real Madrid-Reims 2:0 ( In Stuttgart)
1962/63 Milan-Benfica 2:1 (London)
1989/90 Milan-Benfica 1:0 ( Vienna)
1968/69 Milan-Ajax 4:1 (Madrid)
1994/95 Milan-Ajax 0:1 (Vienna)
1972/73 Ajax-Juventus 1:0 ( Belgrade)
1995/96 Ajax-Juventus 1:1, 2:4 pen ( Rome)
2004/05 Liverpool-Milan 3:3 , 3:2 pen (Istanbul)
2006/07 Liverpool-Milan ????????? (Athens)
Twice the same team won both matches, twice both teams won one final each.
2 This is the 5th final played in the Balcans, and for the 5th time there is an Italian team playing.
Juve lost both finals in the Balcans ( against HSV in Athens and Ajax in Belgrade) . Milan won one final in Athens and lost one in Istanbul.
3 This is Milan's 11th final in CL/CC ( European 2nd best record). Milan won 6 and lost 4 finals.
This is only the second time Milan plays a CL final against an English team, and for the second time it's Liverpool.
For Liverpool this is their 7th final. They won 5 and lost only one final so far.
This is Liverpool's 4th final against an Italian team. So far they won 2 finals against the Italians in 1984 & 2005 and their only defeat in CL finals came exactly against an Italian team in 1985.
4 In Previous 10 CL/CC finals Milan scored 20 goals and conceded 10.
It makes 2 goals scored per match and 1 goal per match conceded.
In previous 6 finals Liverpool scored 9 goals and conceded 6 .
It's 1.5 goals per match scored and exactly 1 goal conceded per match
5 In their 10 previous finals, Milan had to play extra time on 3 of them. Once Milan was defeated in the extra time, once they were defeated on penalties and once they won on penalties.
Liverpool had to play extra time twice and both times they won on penalties. Both times against Italian teams
6 Milan never lost 2 finals in a row, NEVER.
The first final in 1958 was lost, then 4 finals were won in a row and after that it goes lost-won-lost-won-lost- ? ...... Is there a pattern here and will Milan's next final be won ? :)
Just like Milan, Liverpool won 4 finals in a row, and after that it goes lost-won- ? ...... Lost again ? :)
7 And finally :
This is the 24th final where at least one Italian team plays. Italians won 10 of these finals.
This is only the 4th final Italian teams play against an English team and unbelievably, for the 4th time it's the same English team - Liverpool. Like i already mentioned, 1 win and 2 defeats in the finals for the Italians against the English
This is the 14th final for one English team. In previous 13 finals English teams have a pretty good record with 10 wins and only 3 defeats.

There will be a new, yet also time-honoured and traditional, look to the trophy ceremonies at UEFA's two big forthcoming club showcases - the UEFA Cup final in Glasgow on Wednesday and the UEFA Champions League final in Athens on 23 May. In this article, UEFA President Michel Platini explains why the winning teams will climb the steps to receive the respective trophies at the end of each final.
..."The winners will climb steps to receive the trophy amid the crowd of fans, the football people, those who are loyal to the game. Football is being restored to its rightful place - its heroes are being returned to the crowd, the winners are united with the fans in the grandstand, rather than the fans merely watching events on the big screen. Is it right to say that the Athens final is a Battle between a team that likes to play good football and another team that prefers to counterattack?
Rafa Benitez: You see, I have a deep respect for Milan and his coach, especially after the way they played against a great team like Manchester United. To be honest, it was a great tie. We all love that kind of football, but in a final everyone must use his weapons to achieve victory.
Would you share a bottle of wine with Ancelotti?
Rafa Benitez: Of course, He deserves my respect. In the final two years ago he did what he had to do. They were 3-0 up and when the game started to change badly for them he did what he had to do considering his options. The final was very even and we were lucky to find a way to stop them. Then we won on penalties. I say it again. Ancelotti is an excellent coach.
Garcia asked them not to touch the coppa, and when he saw Kaka and Sheva pat the cup, it gave him a hint of hope. I don't know about you guys, but am starting to beleive in the warning. Should we send out a message to the boys in Italy? :nervous:
I think we should send them a message that everyone of them should touch the trophy, wear our white shirts, do everything we did last time, except giving up those 3 goals. Put things right.
Also it's good to hear Benitez giving Carlo some respect along with SAF. It's a little refreshing after hearing some statements from Gerrard and the Mourinho style of Press.

Gerrard's Liverpool have no fear

Liverpool FC captain Steven Gerrard insists his side have nothing to fear from AC Milan as they look to win the UEFA Champions League for the second time in three seasons.
'Strong Milan'
Liverpool recovered from 3-0 down against Milan in 2005 to win the final on penalties, and as Rafael Benítez's side prepare to take on the Rossoneri again in Athens, Gerrard says confidence is high they can bring the trophy back to Merseyside for a sixth time. "I've watched Milan a lot this season and they are different from 2005, but they are still strong," said Gerrard, who has been offered a new contract by Liverpool.
'Confident'
"They showed against Manchester United [FC] that they are a fantastic team and deserve a lot of respect and that's what we'll give them on the night, but we won't fear them. We're a good team ourselves and we're confident we can do the job. What's important to us is that we prepare right and that the Liverpool team that's been in Europe all season turns up in Athens. If that good team turns up then Milan are in for a really difficult game and we're confident we can lift that cup."
'Humidity'
Liverpool have flown to Spain for a training camp to prepare for next Wednesday's final, just as they did before defeating FC Barcelona in the first knockout round. That trip was dogged by controversy, but Liverpool responded with a superb win at Camp Nou. "We are taking our golf clubs out there," Gerrard joked. "We are going to prepare normally - do the things we normally do back home but obviously we're going to prepare in the heat because we know it's going to be really humid in Greece and that it will be an important factor.
'Turning point'
"The Barcelona game was a big turning point in our Champions League run. To go to the Camp Nou and beat one of the best sides in Europe 2-1, playing good attacking football, that gave us the confidence and belief we could get to this final. But all the hard work we've done this season against your Barcelonas, your Chelseas and in the group, we don't want to let all that go to waste by getting beat in the final."
Refocus minds
Since knocking out Chelsea FC in the semi-finals Benítez has rested key players for the final Premiership games against Fulham FC and Charlton Athletic FC. Having failed to win either, the Liverpool manager said the time had come to refocus minds. "In the last games we were watching a team thinking about the final," he said.
'Calm and confident'
"Our job is to keep the players calm and confident and to give them the things they need to know. The whole idea [about going to Spain] is to train normally and to enjoy it, but especially to be focused. The difference now is that we are closer to the end of the season and cannot train as hard as before. It is more about atmosphere and team spirit."

I haven't read the last 30 pages, i apologise.
I don't know if you have been updated that this time the trip to Athens has been organised in much better way than Istanbul.
The news is not very fresh, but maybe the international links haven't posted it: anyway, the problem when we played in istanbul two years ago was that italian travel agencies bought a large part of travel packages ( ticket+ flight+ hotel) but they found more convenient to sell them in UK, where the request was much bigger.
This caused a disaster in the stadium: 3/4 of it were filled with english supporters.
This time the society has remarked that they will give the tickets directly to fans, withouth any mediation of agencies. This will guarantee a more balanced support during the final.

On a tactical note, i think Benitez is preparing, as i said in the first post, a catenaccio style game. They have no world class players, except Gerrard. Therefore, they will focus on teamwork and tactical accuracy, trying to frustrate our game with Sacchi style pressing.
I think this can be an advantadge, if you think about it: this is a style of game we cope with week in week out. When we face the middle table (no disrespect meant to Liverpool ) teams, they usually close every space left.
That's why we'll have to win the game on the flanks. I think Kakŕ will have to do a superwork, starting from the flanks and getting to the center. If quality players will cause trouble on the wings, they will widen the defensive lock and we'll have more space to hit with other players, like Pippo or, for ex, with Seedorf or Ambro's headers.
The secret is to have a quick flow with the ball and sudden game diversions, from one side to another.
Another key will be to slower the tempo, with ball possession, and therefore to avoid their pressing.
Especially how drunk the scousers get
and especially how violent italians are.
Jamie, my boy, are you with us or against us?? :5ok: :pp20:

Liverpool will play on courage and hard work with Kuyt and Gerrard, and with the Aerial power of Crouch they are very strong in the air.
If we give them minimum space and play quick football with Kaka' on the end I can see chances for us.
Forza Milan.

I would like Milan to win this one to make it one win each.

Another key will be to slower the tempo, with ball possession, and therefore to avoid their pressing. Excellent analysis Gio! (As usual)...I agree with your thoughts 100%...I should also mention that Liverpool will tend to the long ball, especially after we score, so Dida will have to be at his best in estimating his positioning on the crosses/high long balls to Crouch...while our DMs, RB and LB will have to work hard to limit the amount of crosses we allow into the box.
If Crouch plays, then I would rather Kala play over Maldini, as he is better than il capitano in the air... :uhm:
The key for me, will be who scores first, and how early in the game the first goal is scored.
If we manage to score first, the game will open up, and they will be forced to attack, either through long balls to Crouch, or via runs down either flank with Riise and Pennant/Zenden...or somesuch...this will allow us space on the counter, and it will be over if we convert all, or the majority of our chances.
If they score first, then we will have it all to do. They will withdraw into a defensive shell, and we will have to take some risks to unlock their defense, and this is where Pirlo will need to have his "A-Class" game..to slice them open with incisive passing...then Gila/Pippo, Seedorf, and Kaka will have to convert these chances.
Set pieces will also factor, and the side that concededes the least (at the risk of being obvious) will stand a better chance, especially with Pirlo on the dead ball, and Crouch, Gerrard, et al on the crosses to the far post...a "traditional" weak spot for the Carlo coached Milan.
My palms are sweaty, I am quite nervous, and I have 6 more days to go before the actual game...sheesh...my poor heart! :w221:
And Jim_UK: very politically correct reply to Debs there old chap! :diablo:
