Watched Sympathy for Lady Vengeance last night (third of the Vengeance trilogy including Sympathy for Mr Vengeance and Oldboy). Though it doesn't reach the same levels Oldboy did for me, it is a superb film, one which can be considered a classic. Its beautiful to look at, music is excellent and the acting is superb. A fantastic film.

Also saw Banlieue 13 (District 13). A french film produced (or directed? I forget) by Luc Besson. Great action that uses parkour (free running) for the main sequences. The acting is fairly good (nothing special) and though the film lacks any real great depth, it has enough to keep it going nicely. The best parts are the great hip hop score and the truly brilliant action sequences, which are a joy to watch.

Finally, I saw Fearless, Jet Li's most recent martial arts epic. Based on martial arts legend, Huo Yuanjia, its fairly similar to many classic Jet Li films, such as the Once upon a time in China series. A decent film with good action, but it fails to really engross the viewer as more than a Jet Li action film, as little new ground is touched.

Just watched The Libertine....b/c it's a Johnny Depp movie for one thing and b/c it sounded interesting. :nervous: It...uhhh....certainly is a different film...I liked it but it's not exactly for family viewing (no children)!

A few days ago i saw Pirates of the Carribean ... that was good, spectacular in places, but on the whole nothing more than a good film. It's hard to judge the middle part of a trilogy as it's neither a beginning or an ending. Depp is good as Jack Sparrow, although i got the feeling he overplayed the drunken captain ... could have been the script though.

The second film i saw was Superman Returns. I thought this was a great film, it had the throwbacks and links to the original films aswell as being able to update it and modernise it. Some of the effects in this are truly sensational and are worth the admission fee alone. The guy who plays Superman seems born for this part, just as Maguire was born to play Spiderman. He looks like Reeve's twin at some points, the resemblance is uncanny. In all, a really good film which will spawn some worthy sequels (the second film is already in the pipe line and is due for a 2009 release). Apart from the main story, there was one tiny line that included the city of another well known superhero ... possibly indicating that Singer (director) is thinking about a famous comic book tie in .... now that would be something :D

Ah, beat me to it! :D

I saw it Friday night and was impressed. Its not intelligent and the plot is full of little holes, but the special effects and the fact its a quality Superman film make it a decent Summer blockbuster, and really, in that you shouldn't ever expect anything too smart. I agree that Brandon Routh was brilliant as Superman, and Kevin Spacey just as good as Lex.

I liked the little reference to the "other city", but I doubt there'll be any tie in anytime soon (other than if they decide to create a Justice League film).

Finally, I think John Ottman's score deserves credit, as it worked superbly with the film.

Today i watched Warriors Two. This is a classic film and was quite a landmark when it was made in 1978. It was one of the first films to marry the fighting techniques and the tumbling theatrics of Chinese Opera houses to create the action film style we recognise today.

It still stands up as a really good film even though it's nearly 30 years old. There's also a good 'making of' documentary that shows a good insight into the punishing training and commitment the actors had to do at the time.

I'm sure you've probably seen this Dev as it's about a historical Wing Chun figure :D

warriors two is a pretty good film and yes, is a fairly good film about Wing Chun, even if it makes it a little more watchable.

Sammo Hung who directed the film also has practiced Wing Chun and all of the cast went through a pretty thorough training of the system for a month or two before it was shot, so much of it applies the martial art quite authentically.

Personally, what I enjoyed about it was the theory it explains about the Wing Chun system, from techniques to using the opponents energy, to obtaining power through good technique and being able to feel through the opponents guard through sensitivity of touch and reflexes through keeping constant contact with the opponents, thus controlling them.

My sifu recommended the film to me personally, and after watching it, I agree with him that this is one of the more authentic Wing Chun films around (unlike the film called "Wing Chun", which is a disaster).

Wing Chun (the film) is an enjoyable film, but from a technical/authentic side of things i guess it is quite poor.

Does your Sifu poke you with needles Dev ? :ilol:

If there was a Wing Chun class near me, i would want to take it up. But there isn't, not as far as i'm aware. Although i watched Ong Bak last night also and then wanted to learn Muay Thai :D

Yeah, you often have to be careful of who teaches you Wing Chun too, in my case I was very lucky.

Oh and Requiem for a Dream is a great film.

I haven't seen Pirates 2 yet but I've watched several behind the scenes things that have been on some of the movie channels, and just watching that stuff has me totally psyched to see the movie!! From what I've heard, and I'm not one to put credence in reviews, but there are 2 camps, I gahter--one saying it's not as good, there's too much action and too many subplots; and the other side that says it's as good or better than the original. I've also heard it's actually better the 2nd time so I'll no doubt be seeing it twice...if only to sit and stare at Orlando Bloom and Johnny Depp!! :musk:

You know, I was thinking about the Johnny overplayed Jack Sparrow thing....and I wonder if it's b/c he keeps saying how much he enjoys this character, so he really throws himself into it?

ct

Pirates 2: Technically, it is better than the first one. The action is great, the gag is much more funnier (though I don't think nothing can top why's the rum gone? line) and it is much much more scarier.

But... it is all over the place. The cannibal island sequence DO NOT contribute to anything on the storyline. It is funny, but the whole scene is useless in regards to the plot. The three-way-swordfight is great, probably gonna win the award for best action sequence ever! But they could trim it down. It seem it went on and on and on and on and....

Now, we need to wait for the third one to find out what happen. i don't mind, 'cept, I was wondering how many villains are they gonna put in the 3rd movie.

Miami Vice = :5ok:

I saw this film this morning and i thought it was great. Not a full on action film with over the top sequences, just a raw and gritty movie. Obviously it's based on the original tv series and the main characters are all there, but apart from that i'm not sure there are many other links between the two.

This film is very realistic, the types of camera shots used and the grainy film add to the realism. The fast boats, fast cars, beach side condos, Miami clubs, Cuban lifestyle, it's all there in bucket loads and it's great, especially if you like that sort of thing.

The only slight criticism i have of the film is that i found there to be alot of mumbling, i didn't find the words clear enough in some points. But you get the jist of it and that's enough i guess.

It has all the marks for a good series of films and if it does spawn a few sequels then this will be a good debut and a good benchmark for the Miami Vice team.

Go see it !

ACMILAN1983

can't wait to see Miami Vice myself, apparently its the kind of raw and gritty style Michael Mann wanted to do with the original tv series, but wasn't allowed to.

I saw Brokeback Mountain lately, it was actually a good love story and Ang Lee's direction was beautiful, whether it sprawling landscapes or subtle loving moments between the characters.

Dev, have you seen Warrior King ? Although i think it's been out in Asian cinemas for a while, it seems to be finally released in Western Cinemas. It's Tony Jaa's ?? (guy from Ong Bak) new film .... well new for western audiences :D

Saw Miami Vice today and like Jim I loved it. Very gritty and down to earth, the cast did a great job and the soundtrack was ace. Michael Mann deserves praise, as he did a fantastic job bringing it to the big screen.

If you hope for something like the old tv series, expect to be a little disappointed, as this is quite a different prospect.

I haven't seen Warrior King yet, but have been meaning to.

Glad you liked it Dev. I loved the twin blue flames out of the Ferrari, that was ace :D

I also loved the kind of laid back lifestyle they had ... lets just get in this power boat and sail to Cuba :mex: :D

Although i sometimes see films twice at the cinema, most of the time it's not because of the film but because of the social side of things or watching it again with different friends. However, with this film i would want to see it go again because of the movie, it's quality.

I'd heard and read reviews saying there were to many subplots, so maybe I was prepared as I didn't find it confusing.

I was almost ready to agree aobut the cannibal island scene until I replayed it in my mind (and we're going to see it again, I think on Friday so I can double check) and came up with some things that scene does for the movie.

--reunites Jack and Will
--Will and the crew learn to cooperate, when they're swinging the bone ball and running around in it
--which in turn sets Wil up as being a stronger character, he's a bit older and wiser
--it gets the Black Pearl back in the water
--reminds us or re-establishes that the pirates are now mortal

I don't know if it was too long or not as I was anxiously awaiting some of the stunts I'd seen in behind the scenes previews for the movie! :bri:

Just saw The Hills Have Eyes. oh my God, I'll never go camping again, nor will I ever travel in the desert!!! :str:

Destination 3 we also just saw, and I agree, it was CREEPYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

Unfaithful we rented a couple years ago, totally engrossing!

I think the next horror flick we'll rent is Hostel..... :bri:

I was just about to post and see if any of our American members had seen that film and now you saved me the trouble :D

Can't wait to see it. There's a group of comedy actors & writers at the moment that usually guarantee a hit.

Will Ferrel, Owen Wilson, Ben Stiller, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, Luke Wilson, Vince Vaughn, David Koechner, Adam McKay & Judd Apatow. Any film along the lines of Anchorman, 40 Year Old Virgin, Wedding Crashers, Kicking & Screaming, Old Skool, etc, etc usually has a group of these people working on it. Comedy gold :D

I started watching a film called "Cypher" the other day, but it was on late at night and i went to bed instead.

However, in the bit i did watch, i thought it was a good film, very different. It's about a guy who's employed by a company to spy on other companies, but then their main rival tells him not to believe everything he's being told ... so you get confused to what is the truth, etc. It's by the guy who directed "Cube", which has a mini cult status now.

I'll have to rent it to see if the whole film is a good film or just the part i watched.

Waking Life is definitely more bizarre and the structure of the movie is very different - it is a series of dialogues of ideas rather than the regular movie plot. The filming technique is surreal.

This movie makes you think and is brilliantly made :sweeteye:

Rented a bunch of movies over the long Labor Day weekend b/c my roomie was sick as a dog.

Silent Hill--yuck, didn't like it and then I found out it was another movie based on a game. I like the weird and unusual, but this one was just too...unexplained.

Take the Lead--an Antonio Banderas movie, which I tend to like. Interesting, especially if you like music and dancing of all types.

Love to Rent--an HBO movie, after about 10 or 15 minutes we trashed it.

Bridezillas Season One--tame! Season one was so tame comapred to the total witches they have on there now! For the uninformed, Bridezillas is a show on the WE network, and we've fallen into the habit of watching it for the laughs. 2 disks, probably about 7 hours total. Yeah, pure mindless stuff!

National treasure--on satellite--for about the 20th time. Don't know what it is about this movie. Thought the previews looked intriguing even tho Nicholas Cage was in it, finally rented it abut a year ago and TOTALLY enjoyed every minute of it, to the point where if we come across it on cable or satellite, no matter where it is in the movie, we just have to stop and watch it.

Yes, that's him, adorable just so tiny looking. He's going to be in a new movie by the guy who Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which I enjoyed, so looking forward to that.

Other recently movies...

Kinky Boots - loved it, hilarious, predictable but cute (and loosely based on a true story)

Goal The dream begins - again predictable but not bad, I think they did a nice job of editing the actors in with actual matches

Poseidon - hated it

Read My Lips - french movie, loved it, excellent movie, great actors

I don't know why the previous thread was deleted or has gone missing. Whatever.... this one for MOVIES!!!

This week I saw two bad a$$ movies. Mafia, Betrayal, Loyalty.... all the elements of a good movie but most of all I look for "realism" in any movie.

The first is a Scorsese epic, yes you guessed it right, it is "The Departed". Awesome movie, great acting and superb direction. Well you just have to see this film.

The second one is a little unknown but as good as "The Departed" it is "A history of Violence". Again its a must see for all the guys who like mafia-related movies.

Casino Royale any one?

Bond, James Bond!

Yes i am on about Casino Royale, the latest outing for the best spy in the world! :D

I loved the film, i thought elements of it were superb though it did drag a tiny bit towards the end. However, some of the slower paced scenes in the last hour of the film let you see Bond as a different character, which is a refreshing change.

This time out, Bond is a rookie and seeing some of the mistakes he makes (getting spotted when taking cover, having his ear piece seen, being spotted when trailing someone, etc) is a nice touch. This and some of the severe pummelings he gets make him incredibly human and not so nearly invincible as before. In other films he'd have been in a fight and hardly a hair was out of place afterwards, Craig (Daniel Craig :D) brings both grit and realism to the role. He's not that good looking, not everything goes his way, he doesn't always get the girl or even always bed the girl, he's almost a believable character now, which is great to see.

The film noir intro was great and the whole parkour opening action scene was amazing. I love seeing parkour and done in a way to enhance the art made it even more explosive, just fantastic. I just hope audiences will appreciate that alot of the jumps and moves made in that scene were done without wires or stunt tricks. Free runners really do these things, make these huge leaps and can land on the smallest ledges and keep their balance.

It was a bit weird seeing Bond drive a Ford, not sure i liked that, but i guess it added to the realism. Throw in some believable bad guys (though thankfully not over dramatic), some brutal fights, some tough talking from M and Bond's acceptance of what and who he is, the most tense poker game ever, good chase scenes and a torture scene that will make EVERY guy whince in pain and you have a great start to Craig's career as Bond.

I hope the next Bond film will be similarly 'real' and not at all hollywood. I can't wait! :D

I had my suspicions about who played the parkour bad guy Mollaka in the film and i'm sure it was Sebastien Foucan, one of if not THE most prominent figure in parkour ... and i was right! I just checked it on imdb and it's him. So now i know that almost all of his jumps were real and not fake. Foucan is just amazing!

The Departed was awesome. Best movie I've seen this year. Great acting, great suspense, just an excellent movie in general.

I also saw Flags of our Fathers, one of the most overrated movies I've seen in a long time. I was expecting more, a lot more, especially after having read the book. Except for the three main characters, you don't get to learn anything about the other flag raisers. And the movie barely shows anything about the battle following the flag raising.

Even though its more historically accurate than Saving Private Ryan, I think the latter is a much, much better movie. By the end you actually get to know the characters and you care about what happens to them. In Flags of our Fathers, unless you've read the book, you probably won't be able to name the 6 flag raisers, unless you listened very closely. And you definitely won't be sure who was who in the movie.

Can't wait to finally see Borat this week :devf:

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

Love it so much it hurts. There are so many great lines, and moments. To many to count. Johnny Depp should have received an Oscar for it. His performance is nothing short of genius. I know there never will be, but a sequel would rock. Benicio Del Toro takes a great turn as the disturbed side-kick. I wonder if his character could even tell the difference between sobriety and being high. All of the cameos are a nice treat, especially the Flea one in the bathroom, " I s-p-i-l-l-e-d L-S-D o-n m-y s-h-i-r-t..." Tobey Maguire has a great scene as well, he actually looks quite believable as the sickly albino guy. I'd say it's nothing short of incredible.

Care to share the reasons why you think it's such a bad film?

Well I'm not too sure if you've wathced it yet. Again Jim dont waste your money. Dev the book might have been enjoyable but the movie is really really bad.
I think it bad Jim for several reasons. First of all this is about an actual historical event. Yes hsitory can be vague and making it into a movie quite impossible to tell the WHOLE story. I can understand that.
What did irk me about this movie was the total cgi characteristics of the movie. I think all of it was cgi. Secondly the film was more "fantasy" than fantasy themed stories out there like Lord of the Rings. Remember this is based on a historical event. Lastly the allegorical touch to it was just way over the top. The whole movie just dehumanizes what happen to real people, be they the Greeks or Persians. It was just unrealistic. Dont believe me??? Well wait for some sucker to by a dvd and borrow it. Perhaps a pirated download is possible as well.
I for the most part just dont go to the movies. Dont have the time. I somehow got dragged into going from some friends who wanted me to go for the sake of scrutinizing the historical accuracy of the film. Trust me... it was so bad that they really didnt need me to figure this out. Last time I went to a movie prior to this one was that movie with Russel Crowe as some British sea Captain chasing some darn Frenchie vessel during the Napoleanic Wars. That was a LOOOOONNNGG time ago no?

Kui, as you were dragged to the film with little notice you can't be blamed for not fully grasping the concept behind it. I shall explain.

I think it bad Jim for several reasons. First of all this is about an actual historical event

Yes, Frank Millar's film is based on his own graphic novel, which in turn was no doubt based on the original film "300 Spartans" (which i saw yesterday) and that in turn was probably based on something else ...etc, etc ... until you work all the way back to the original event.

What did irk me about this movie was the total cgi characteristics of the movie. I think all of it was cgi.

This is the first area where some knowledge of either Millar or his work would have been a good preperation for you in terms of what to expect from the aesthitical side of the film. It was Millar's idea to have it all cgi in the first place, it was supposed to be that way and it follows the cgi/comic book style he implemented in Sin City (again a film he did based on his own graphic novels).

Secondly the film was more "fantasy" than fantasy themed stories out there like Lord of the Rings. Remember this is based on a historical event. Lastly the allegorical touch to it was just way over the top.

This is the other area in which some prior knowledge would have held you in good stead for the film. The film isn't solely based on the historical side of things, it's based on Millar's graphic novel first and foremost which is why it includes the fantasy elements that are naturally common in the medium of graphic novels. So in that respect the allegorical touch was supposed to be there and supposed to be as over the top as it was, how else can you bring a comic book to life visually?

Historically, i should imagine that it follows the main points of the Spartans against the Persians. I can't comment a great deal on this side of things as i've not seen the film yet, but having seen the original film and knowing a bit about the battle i should be able to comment further on 300's historical accuracy at a later date.

I'm sure had you known some of this beforehand Kui, i believe your views on the film may have been a little different. You may still not have liked it, a complete cgi film isn't everyone's cup of tea, but you wouldn't have been expecting an historically accurate and realistic movie if you knew it was supposed to be a comic book film.

Maybe your friend's should have told you some of this first or at least offer to give you your money back :D

Did it not bother you that the people of "color" were bad guys? There was nothing to do with Persia or Persians, but the bad guys were literal those of african decent. Was that all this guy Millar's conception or production oversight?
Be it now that you have explained this film produced after a comic book author, though I did not enjoy the film I will accept the artistic qualities of it. Just wasnt my taste.

Haha , oh now they are putting black people in a bad daylight ? :D :D In the end , it were the persians who invaded Greece many times , so they are the "bad" guys . Like it or not.

As Jim said , this isnt about historical facts , this is an adaptation from a comic book my frank miller. You dont need me to say those giant rhinos didnt excist , do you ?? You said you dont have the time to read that comic , but you did had the time to see the whole film ? :) Next time please read a preview or something , cause even my gf who doesnt know anything about greek history knew that this was an adaptation from a comic book.

The producers never said this film was 100 % historical correct. If someone is complaining about that well just dont watch it. Its like saying Amistad was a bad comedy because it was not funny. Hello , it's not a comedy !! And 300 is not about being historical correct & realistic.

Even as a Greek , who absolutly hated Troy and Alexander , do think this movie was amazing.

I had deep reservations from the start before even going to this movie. Yet... friends had baited me to go and watch it, to at least check out and scrutinize the historical accuracies of the movie. Dont forget as a learner of history with no knowledge of "comics", I have a purist attitude towards it. I know movies cant be perfect and I should expect that.
A couple of things are for sure about this movie that we perhaps can agree on.
1. The movie accurately portrayed the story in accordance to Millers comics. (I'll trust you all on that).
2. BUT this movie's historical value is like down there at zero.
Artistic Value- somewhere between 75-100
Historical value- down there between 0-25.

Well then just say you didnt liked the movie. But for the right reasons .I wouldn't say it has no historical value at all. Let's say about 50/50 , cause the main thing is that few stood against many , and I think they did one hell of a job to show that.

About frank Miller , i didnt even know who that was before i ever heard of this movie. But im sure if you knew that it was an adaptation from a comic book , you wouldn't be all negative. But I can understand you if you where disapointed when you where expecting realism & historical truth.

So i saw 300 today and i have to say i loved it. I think far too many people, lets call them the critics and so called film/artistic experts :rollani:, read way too much into these things.

I've done some reading into the reasons people slate this film and the majority of them are just utter B.S. made by people who seem to have little grasp of the obvious.

Lets look at the racism aspect. It's racist because all the bad guys are African, Asian and Arabic men in black costumes, some of which have masks and all the good guys are white. Some reviewer, oops sorry critical expert, actually said this. Lets look at this more closely Mr. Expert. In the Achaemenid dynasty when Xerxes ruled Persia, they had conquered ( now lets not say they just strolled up and politely asked to take over all these nations :rollani: ) a vast amount of the Middle East, parts of Asia and North Africa. Now surely that would suggest the Persian army at that time would have alot of people from those different nations in it ... wouldn't it? Or am i just being too simple here? As for the Greeks only being represented by white people ... well call the cops! Lets have some extras in there of different origins to make it truly historically accurate and politically correct!

As for the black costumes, some of the Persian army were depicted wearing black armour/costumes in the original film "The 300" which was made in the 60's (i think), i wonder if they were cited as being racist at the time. Maybe they could just wear a nice inoffensive colour like mauve or taupe, though no doubt you could find a racist outline to that also. The face masks is also something entirely possible if completely inaccurate. Given the possible Asian influences on the Persian army and that it would incorrporate the best each nation it took over had to offer, it's not impossible to think battle armour of that magnitude could have been copied from the Chinese. The other aspect was the deformed characters, the guy writing this drivel of an argument said that it was racist because the Persians had deformed people in their ranks, well if he watches the film i think he'll find a load of Greeks who were deformed also!!

Historically worthless? In some aspects i guess it is, you wouldn't want to use it to teach a history lesson, but then it wasn't intended to do that anyway. Arguments say it's not a fitting tribute to those that gave their lives in this battle, that it doesn't do this that and the other. Hello, it's based on the interpretation of a f*cking comic book! That's why it's all over the top! That's why things are depicted in such a brazen and stark manner. That's why elements are larger than life, are made more amazing (beasts, xerxes himself, the oracle at delphi, etc), comic books are larger than life! Are you likely to get depth and characterisation from a comic book script? You'd think some of these critics would learn the medium of comic books to fully understand what they're trying to get across and so these "experts" can write something accurate.

Maybe we should start slating operas? After all they portray historical events in over the top methods, lets have a go at bashing them! I did find some sanity in the midst of all the critical nonsense though and here's a quote from director Zack Snyder

Snyder himself dismisses ideological readings, suggesting that reviewers who critique a "graphic novel movie about a bunch of guys...stomping the snot out of each other" using words like " 'neocon,' 'homophobic,' 'homoerotic' or 'racist' " are "missing the point.

Finally, some sense! Some people in this world need to accept the part they've played in its history. As an Englishman i get it stuffed down my throat almost constantly ... "England did this" "You conquered this country hundreds of years ago", "Your a bad nation" ... blah blah blah. Time for someone else to be on the receiving end and all you hear is it's racist! Sorry but Persia did invade a shed load of nations, they were made up of people from Arabic, Asian & African origins and Greece was mainly made up of white greeks!

One of the few things i would say about the film is the depiction of the Persians in terms of bloodlust, power hungry. Yes they brought alot to civilisation from art & architecture to politics and teachings etc ... but they had their darker side too, they weren't all sweetness and light. It hurts to see your own nation as barbaric warriors, but at times our nations were these things. As much as you want to celebrate the good things, you have to be accepting of the bad things also.

I've kind of rambled a bit and vented alot. So to summarise. 300 is good if you like over the top, in your face, stylistic violence and artistic cinematography. It's of little historical use but the events it portrays down to the characters names, some of the lines they speak, where the battle takes place, what the Spartans wear and how some of the Persians might have been seen are pretty much accurate. They had Greek hisorical professors on board so it's not of zero historical accuracy. There is however far too much emphasis on the Spartans, they weren't the be all and end all. Accept it as what it is without reading or expecting too much from it and you'll love it. If you like this sort of thing.

[/end rant]

So i saw 300 today and i have to say i loved it. I think far too many people, lets call them the critics and so called film/artistic experts :rollani:, read way too much into these things.

It says much... your argument that these prevalent "god knows how many?" anti-english movies ire you a bit. Along with the historical discrepancies, there also were discrepancies in the meaning/messge it was trying to portray. Such meanings, allegories, symbolisms also put in retrospect wrongful stigmas attached to certain groups of people. Now I will say it has much to do that it is a "people" problem rather than just solely targeting the movie as the problem. You're right... I'm not an artistic nor a movie expert. I've never claimed to be that. I do believe that decent qualities of character in people is a must. I claim no expertise in this aspect either but such qualities are lacking these days. We have a world desensitised, unsensibled, unfeeling to fellow men and women. This movie and all those "hate the english" movies are the result of such ills we see in people.

Did we not hear in the movie the undertone of the word "freedom"? Now this freedom in context wasnt the Spartan meaning of "freedom" some 2500 years ago. It was about now wasnt it? Mind you that the Persian's 2500 years ago view of "freedom" was a bit more liberal than the Spartan practice 2500 years ago. If this message portayed is about now, what is this movie trying to convey of two different world views East v West? Yeah it is just "only a movie". Mein Kampf was just "only a book". Too bad it wasnt in comic book form. That episode in history might have been different (sarcasm... so you know).

I see the point that your friend/source Snyder as you had refenced has made. Have you accepted that point? Being stuffed down your throat with these anti-english movies sounds like you accepted a little bit of my point I was trying to make as well. No? Unless you feel it justified to endorse all such movies that stigmatize people because it was done to you. I'm confident that such isnt the case.

Let me give you an alter-ego of mine. Opera is beautiful. This 300 and the like movies are utter cr*p. On the other hand... I will again give this movie its "artistic" credit that it is due. In doing so, I think I also with fairness give an opinion that this movie lacked historical accuracy. I will in fairness also take your point that this movie was produced in such a format as to emphasize it being a comic. Most of these anti-english movies you were talking about gave an unjust setting so it beared the appearance to seem like it actually did happen. Braveheart, The Patriot, Zulu Dawn, just to name a few. Such potrayals I do not endorse be they english or any other race.

In closing... of course you rambled on! Its ok too cause I do it all the time. Hopefully I've been able to meet you halfway in consensus between one another so that we bring closure to this issue. I dont know??? You'll have to let me know Jim. I'm confident you shall.

Thanks for your perspective on the movie Jim. I was considering going to see 300 and now i'm certain of it. The trailers were indeed luring as well.
It seems though that people, okay we all know I mean Kui; Kui try and keep in mind that this movie was based on a book that was based on a historical event. That leaves a lot of room for both fantasy and error. It was created not as a history lesson but for entertainment and bottom line, to make money. Why do you seem to take personal offense to the point of argument for things such as this ? There is ALWAYS the option of not watching. It is not like you were unaware of the basis of this movie before you were dragged in to see it and considering your ideals and such you had to know you were certainly going to be offended. This movie ultimately was the vision of the director. His perspective. By defination "based on" means, to form or provide a base for..... inaccuracies are a given .......no ?

Kui i've taken your points on board but i still think that (a) this film is not racist, (b) has no hidden or even obvious message about A versus B and (c) has some historical accuracy.

I did write a whole long post again, but i read some other 'complaints' on various websites about how 300 is racist and it just made me laugh. Some of the points they make are just too desperate to take seriously.

Jim... I've never heard of this Millar guy you're talking about. I dont have the luxury of time to immerse my brain in something so useful as a comic book. Did it not bother you that the people of "color" were bad guys? There was nothing to do with Persia or Persians, but the bad guys were literal those of african decent. Was that all this guy Millar's conception or production oversight?

If you've heard--and not read--any of the talk around 300, you'd know it was based on a graphic novel. I can't even call it a comic book, but next time I'm at Borders I'm going to look for it to see the actual format and some of the content. This movie to me is merely part of a trent Hollywood is going thru now, looking for unusual sources to base movies on. The video game trend I found stupid, even tho I did avidly watch the first Lara Croft flick. Now we're looking to graphic novels.

As a librarian, I can tell you that I had a good intro to graphic novels thansk to a fellow librarian who showcased the true graphic NOVEL--some of the Japanese works and a series called Maus just to name a couple. I know what I'm looking for if I decide to start adding some of this literary form to my shelves. We're NOT talking comic books in any way, shape or form! One book rep came in telling me, with great rolling of eyes, that he had some of what he was being told were graphic novels--he showed them to me and they were indeed just comic books--poor adaptation of text, sloppy artwork, too short to properly tell the story. My point is, know the difference before derisively calling something a comic book. The Maus series could never be called a comic book!

As for the color of the Persians....oh...my...gawd....could we stop and think about the area of the world being represented? Should they have been caucasian? Even the Spartans shouldn't be caucasian, I'm sorry. For that matter, neither should the depictions of Christ.

So as far as historical accuracy in the movie 300, I was never looking for that, since I knew its source. This film should be viewed as a jumping off point--go research the actual event--and also, for me at any rate, the film techniques used to get the whole look and feel that it has. It's a movie, it's entertaining.....

sorry Debs, you're not allowed to think that way these days :guw:

I've seen the Maus series around alot, but i've never really been tempted to buy it. Alan Moore's novels are usually pretty good too, though unfortunately neither of the two that have been put to film (Extraordinary league of gentlemen & V for Vendetta) has turned out very well. Indeed Moore refuses to have anything to do with the films and does his best to distance himself from them as much as he can.

To be honest i only buy graphic novels if they're illustrated well, i'm a bit of an eye candy addict :D Anything by Tony Wong or Andy Seto i usually snap up if i can afford it. The next time you're in Borders, have a look for the graphic novel of the film 'Hero', it's by Andy Seto and it's truly amazing.

I have the 300 Graphic novel and don't really see how it could be called a comic if I'm honest. I really like Frank Miller's work, including 300, Sin City and The Dark Knight returns.

Jim, how can you talk Alan Moore and not mention Watchmen, an outstanding book. By the way, the Watchmen film is being made and will be directed by Zack something (director of 300 ;) ).

I'm also a fan of manga, manhwa (Korean) and to a lesser degree Manhua (Chinese).

Not allowed to think what way? That's it's a movie and it's just supposed to be entertaining? Well, to be honest, I really dislike going to see dreary, sad, movies that are trying to drive home some sort of lesson. I go to be entertained. No, better yet, I go to escape!

I will rent almost anything that people tell me is good, don't get me wrong on that point. But at least when I rent movies I don't feel so bad if I don't like it and simply turn it off after the first 20-30 minutes--I haven't wasted an afternoon in a theatre.

haha ... you'll probably have to wait until next easter now, i should imagine they're all sold out of white chocolate easter bunnies :D

I've just come back from seeing 'Next', the Nicholas Cage film about a guy who can see 2 mins into his own future. It would have been a nice power to have, that way i could have saved myself 2 hours of time and £7 in money  :D

There are some nice touches in it, but there's more wood in that film than you see in a forest ... (and when i say wood, i mean wooden acting, not the smutty line of thinking some of you might imagine :grinser: ) ... just not worth seeing at the cinema. I wished i'd saved my money and gone and saw the new Chow Yun Fat film (the title escapes me), at least i know i would have enjoyed that knowing i like those kinds of films.

Yesterday i watched Spiderman 3 and have to say it's quite an enjoyable film. Being a comic book nerd and fan of superhero films, i was always going to enjoy this one, but even for the neutral i think it's a good film to watch.

It does have some 'dragging' moments and there are some scenes that are just too over the top, like the reporter scene at the end of the film for the big battle and when Spiderman swings past and lands in front of a huge American flag billowing in the wind. The rest of the film however is fantastic comic book action and i have to say they did a great job with Venom (who i was a bit worried about at first thinking he'd be too skinny) and sandman (although he's as wooden as heck). What strikes you most about this film is the humour though, there are alot of laugh out loud moments.

So all in all it gets the thumbs up.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

Good points: The humour, the Silver Surfer

Bad points: Not enough of the Silver Surfer, you never see Galactus, the ending, not enough action (too much bumbling about)

I wanted to enjoy this film alot more, it's still good and well worth watching but it could have been so much better.

I don't think there's much out now until Die Hard 4 & Transformers ... what a day that will be :D

Die Hard 4.0 is a very good film and thoroughly entertaining. Though i must say the plot is quite average/obvious and there are moments where the film seems to jump a bit. It also feels like a generic action film and not a Die Hard film. Having said all that though, it'll make you laugh and impress you with some of the stunts. Definately worth seeing and one of the best action films to come out for a long time.

I saw two thirds of the Prestige and then the DVD messed up. Was good until then.

Giogos, The Prestige is about two magicians who become rivals after some bad history and keep attempting to ruin each other.

Transformers is coming out and I've heard some pretty positive feedback. Simpsons is also coming and all I know is that the creators say to watch until the very end (after the credits) for a little surprise (to do with Maggie apparently)

Jim_UK
23-07-2007, 07:04
I've seen the Prestige and i really liked it, a very good film. Probably because it had Micheal Cain in it, he's awesome :D

I liked Christian Bale in it, but over the weekend i saw 'Harsh Times' and i thought it was average at best. There was something not right about Bale calling everyone 'Dog', 'Homey', 'Esse' (or however that is spelt) ... trying to be a latino gangster, didn't work for me.

I also watched Ghost Rider which is marginally better but only because Cage is a bit humourous in it and it's based on the comics. However, it's still an average film and some of the effects look dated, almost like they've suffered because they spent all the budget on making Ghost Rider look decent. When there is action it's not bad, but the other bits do drag alot.

I also saw Dragon Tiger Gate recently and that's a good film. However, it's a bit like Ghost Rider in that when there's action it's fantastic stuff (Donnie Yen is so good) but it trys to be more adult than usual Hong Kong martial art films and those bits drag just a bit. I also liked it because the comic it's based on is illustrated by Tony Wong and he's just awesome (as is Wing Shing Ma & Andy Seto) :D

Roll on Thursday ... Transformers & Simpsons in one day :5ok:

Jim_UK
26-07-2007, 12:45
Today i saw both 'The Simpsons' movie & 'Transformers' and in all honesty my day could have done without the first film.

The Simpsons film, while having quite a few funny moments and 1 liners, is pretty bad. It doesn't work as a film and what little story there is just gets lost in the timeframe of the movie. What works as a 20 min cartoon fails in a 90 min movie.

Transformers on the other hand is jaw droppingly amazing. Anyone who ever had the toys or liked the cartoons will almost certainly leave the cinema with a huge grin on their face. The work that has gone into making these robots come alive is just breath-taking and incredibly intricate and it works so well on a huge screen.

I had my doubts before i saw the film, thinking 'how can they make this look beliveable?' Well my doubt was answered emphatically and thrown back in my face within the first 10 minutes of the film. The plot won't win any awards and neither will most of the acting, but then this is loosely based on a 20 year old cartoon so you have to cut it a bit of slack.

Hopefully the sequel (which they are bound to make) will be a chance to improve the plot, acting and Micheal Bay's editing/directing skills and take a fantastic film to the next level.

Giorgos, you will love this film :D

Did you see the extra "special" at end of of the Simpsons film Jim?

transformers has been getting pretty good reviews, may see it over the weekend.

I've seen Dragon Tiger Gate too, but wasn't that impressed if I'm honest. HK martial arts films just don't seem half as good as they were in the past. Got to give Donnie Yen credit though, he's a good martial artist and choreographer, just a shame he's only gotten big in the wrong era.

I did Dev and Maggie's first word made me shake my head in resignation. Though if you like the film, you'll enjoy her first word.

Yes, go see Transformers, it is AWESOME!

I read somewhere that it had taken 5 years to make Dragon Tiger Gate, not entirely sure why. But i did like the scene in the restaurant where they first meet Turbo. All the filming from above was a nice idea. You can see Yen's class as a choreographer, it's just a shame the bits linking the fights are a bit dull. Though i'm sure fans of the comic book would like appreciate it more.

I think DTG used too much CG, losing one of the great things (the fact it's actually done by actors/stuntmen) about HK Kung Fu cinema. Plus, it shows that the only real martial artist of the current crop of HK stars is Donnie (I'm not a fan of the young guys, they act like popstars)

Stephen Chow is fantastic, absoloutely hilarious. I thought Kung Fu Hustle was amazing, but tbh Shaolin Soccer for me was even better (the only film that made me laugh so much I was crying and in pain lol).

However, Stephen Chow isn't really a martial artist (actually, I believe he's only done a few days worth of Wing Chun, otherwise he imitates Bruce Lee who's his idol). That's the thing with HK films, the industry isn't doing badly, but martial arts isn't the main attraction now. Films like Infernal Affairs, PTU and Exiled, as well as Chow's brand of comedy are now the more accomplished films. Last good HK action flick imo was New Police Story (pretty much old school Jackie Chan style).

Nope, but i'm a big fan of the Alien serie. Don't know these last installments, but i think it's pretty difficult they can match the brilliance of the first two Alien and Aliens (even though IMO the third one is underated )

*********************************************

Yesterday i was in mood to buy DVD's and bought almost the half of Argento's filmography (at least until the middle 80's where he still got some flair) and a couple of other movies:

- The bird with the crystal plumage
- The cat o' nine tails
- Suspiria
- Inferno
- Tenebrae
- Phenomena

*I'm pretty satisfied with those movies, even though it's not a filmmaker for everyone and every tastes. His movies are strange, particular, full of flaws, with weak plots and poor acting. Despite that, Argento has great style and use of images. His movies are more like nightmares or dreams: you can't explain nightmares, they don't have a plot. They don't have coherence, and can't be measured with reason only. They are a sum of weird set pieces and vivid colourful images (including visionary killing and frightening sets) people hadly forgets.

Saw National Treasure: The Book of Secrets a couple days after it opened and I may have to go see it again. It has its weaknesses, as all sequels do, but it's a rollicking fun ride! I'd been anticipating this movie since the day I foudn out there was going to be a sequel. And I do have to mention my friend Trevor did the soundtrack again, which only added to my anticipation!

Lin's brother got us Pirates 3 for Christmas and we just watched it....and I have to say I was quite disappointed! I loved the other 2 Pirates movies, and I love the combination of Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom and of course Jerry Bruckheimer but this 3rd offering was just lacking somehow. It jumped around alot, it did things that were not explained, even the actors seemed a little confused or lacking in confidence. Very glad I didn't get to see it in the theatre! At least I have the 2nd disk of special features to explore...

'I am Legend' should be called 'I am reasonably entertaining and then end far too abruptly'

Films on my radar for the new year. Obviously National Treasure 2 Debs :D Also Indiana Jones 4, Bond 22, Batman: Dark Knight, Cloverfield, Iron Man ... i'm sure there will be others also.

I thought POTC3 was rubbish, far too long winded and pointless. They degrade in quality as you go through the series, 1 was great, 2 was ok, 3 was poo ... what's worse is that they leave it open for yet another one!

1 trailer you should all check out is 'Teeth', it's different ... that's all i can say :delol:

I also like the look of 'The Mist', might be ok as horror survival films go and '10,000 BC', could also be a neat little film (same director who did Independance Day & The Day After Tomorrow).

I really liked I am Legend :dontkn:
Also 300 and AVP2 although they absolutely have to get another director and writer for part 3 :o

I liked I am Legend, but i wasn't blown away by it.

I've not seen AVP so i doubt i'll watch this new one, neither franchise is as good as it used to be.

My favourite movies of 2007 were (in order):

1) Superbad
2) No country for old men
3) Gone Baby Gone/Bourne Ultimatum
4) Eastern Promises
5) Juno

I am Legend was forgettable.

No country for old men is an absolute must see for any Coen brothers fan.

Superbad was INCREDIBLY HILARIOUS! Jim, I am sorry, Knocked up was good, but if you want to see Apatow and Rogen (the latter co-wrote Superbad with Evan Goldberg) in full flight see Superbad. And Michael Cera is the best thing to happen to comedy since Will Ferrell in my opinion. Some parts totally reminded me of my high school days back in the States. It is in my top 3 favourite comedies of all time list. Seriously guys, make sure you see that movie!!

I envy your thick skin. How can you tolerate Nicholas Cage on the screen for more than 3 second at a time? Are you impervious to scorpion bites as well?

I just learned that they are starting production on a new series of Conan films this year! Now i know most people will knock the camp Arnie versions, but i'm currently reading the complete Conan chronicles by Robert E Howard (the originals) and i must say that if they are true about keeping the new films inline with Howard's stories than the Arnie films then it'll be something to look out for.

So with that, the 2 Hobbit films being put together and the new Gatchaman film, i'm quite happy :grinser:

Cloverfield = Good, but not great.

In the end this is exactly what it says it is, a monster movie. I guess i was expecting a bit more from it after all the clever viral marketing and stylised film making approaches used. Also as Lost is full of secret things and signs/symbols, i was expecting Cloverfield to follow the same route, although not as over the top. But the script was basic and some acting a little wooden, which was a shame.

You're either going to love or hate the camera style, i thought it was good. It is a bit over the top, but i guess if you're being chased by a monster, you're not going for steadiness or focus :D

Some bits were just too stupid, but it didn't detract too much from the film. All of the characters have myspace pages and haven't been updated since the film's release. This kind of marketing is a good idea, i especially liked how 1 of the character's height went from about 6' to 2'6" after the release of the film. I'll leave you to work out why that happened ;)

Finally, don't bother waiting for the garbled audio at the end of the 12 minute long credits, you won't understand it. This is mainly because you have to play it backwards to understand what it says, which questions why it would be put on the film in the first place. Highlight the line underneath to read what it says:
It's still alive

There's talk of a sequel already, depending on the success of this one and if they can find a new way to do the film without repeating the camcorder view or making it look the same as this one.

I just want to praise the works of a true genious: Lars Von Trier.

The 52 years old danish director makes wonderful and challenging movies you will watch several and several times.

The "USA: Land of opportunities" trilogy started with

1) Dogville (2003)

and continued with

2) Manderlay (2005)

These two movies have been taken into my Philosophy of Law program by my lecturers as a starting point to reason around "Liberty and Justice", around the relationship between Dogville (or the City of Men) and Godville (or the City of God, one of the biggest subjects in medioeval philosophy in masterpieces such as Saint Augustine's Civitate Dei ).

The second movie criticises the idea of "democracy exportation" and it shows how good intentions (or bad) can lead to a disaster. It will make you think a lot, and it's perfect to start a debate on political or moral subjects.

I won't bother you anymore. Just alert you that the movie style is very particular. Lars Von Trier founded the Dogma 95 movement, which is meant to take cinematography back to its essence. Therefore the movies are often shot with steadycams, with almost no score or effects and are just based of powerful and fantastically written scripts and great performances from perfect actors.

I saw Vantage Point ... it's average at best.

The crux of the film is seeing the same event through many different character's point of view. Except that after so long it 'rewinds' back to the origin point, this bit gets a bit tiresome after 4 or 5 times :sleepy:

Dukes of Hazzard was on tv last night, that film is a great 'trash' movie. Cars, fights, girls, comedy and Jessica Simpson, what more could you want? :delol:

Requiem for a dream (2000) by Darren Aronofsky:

A movie about drugs and addiction to pills and diets. An allucinating movie who's editing is simply out of this world (2000 cuts against 600- 700 cuts on average for most movies); whose score is magnificent (Clint Mansell) and its oniric main theme also very very famous. Whose cast is first class: Jennifer Connelly, Ellen Burstyn (missing the Oscar for her performance in this movie was a travesty of justice) and Jered Leto.

It's an allucinating movie about drug addiction, and watching it you will understand what i mean with "allucinating". Aronofsky simply takes us into the first person sight of the heroin junkies, or into the MDMA experience, showing what an high person feel. It's an incredible achievement for a director.

The story is simple, but reserves a few surprises. I won't spoil the fun.

It's one of the most powerful movies i've ever seen and it shocks you like a Mike Tyson punch of the face. A must movie, which is already a cult.

Today is a sad day: i heard the 56 y o great director Anthony Minghella prematurely passed away yesterday.

His movie legacy is unvaluable: his great movies are essentially 3

1) The English Patient

2) The talent of Mr. Ripley

3) Return to Cold Mountain

I suggest movie lovers to watch them, they are brilliant movies. My favourite ones are the last two.

Just happened to pop by this thread after a few good years. Anyway I've seen a few really good movies in the past few months that have made it into my favourites. They're all old movies though. The first was Antwone Fischer, a show I oddly seem to be able to relate to. Then there's The Shawshank Redemption (k I know this one's famous). And most recently, King of New York. This is the best of the lot. I can't believe I've been a fan of rap so long and only just managed to catch this movie. This is such a great movie I swear... Anyways for 07 shows, I liked Pirates 3, I Am Legend and Rocky Balboa, just off the top of my head.

I saw Iron Man on Friday and it's ace!

This is the first film Marvel have had full control over and if this is the result then they should assume full control over all of their comic book/film franchises from now on. It has a more grown up attitude to it and isn't over the top or too 'fantasy', it's just the right blend of 'believableness' :D

Robert Downey Jnr is great as Tony Stark and Jeff Bridges looks quite imposing as Obidiah. Overall a very enjoyable film.

I just saw 'In Bruges'. In Bruges is a very good crime/comedy movie. Watch out for Ralph Fiennes. He is just too good. Our British milanistas should love this movie. I have to admit that I am not that much of a Colin Farrell fan but in this movie he showed his talents.

I also saw 'Lust, Caution'. It is a Chinese movie about the youth resurgence against a traitor; set in WW2 era. I am 23 y.o and I have to admit that this movie is very very moving. I am still trying to cope with the emotional trauma of watching this movie. It is still a masterpiece though but be prepared for the emotional roller coaster.

Giovanni: I love mafia films, but my knowledge is limited to the Corleone family and Goodfellas. I have seen many other mafia movies too but these two were the best I have seen in English. I would love to see the movie you mentioned but I will have to wait until it comes out on DVD.

For the movie, you will need a few months to go out with english subtitles. It's all acted in napoletanean dialect.

You can already purchase the book in english:
Roberto Saviano, Gomorrah.

It's no fiction. This stuff is no Sopranos. It's all 100% real. It's a bestseller in Italy and in Europe.
The chapter "Secondigliano war" is worthy the price of the book itself.
I highly recommend it.

I saw The Dark Knight last night and it was incredible. A fantastic film that's deep without compromising the action. It's superbly well made and realised and Christopher Nolan has created a believable world.

Finally, the acting is superb, and none moreso than Heath Ledger, who when originally was announced for the role I was more than a little hesitant. I take my doubts back now, as not only is he the greatest joker ever, he's the greatest villain in a film of this type I can remember. Comical, but an exceptionally creepy character, Ledger has played the joker perfectly. It's a shame he's not with us now.

The film itself is extremely faithful to the graphic novels and really I can't wait for this on blu ray.

Not sure how many of you follow the Chinese film industry, but I personally am looking for what looks to be a huge film coming out this December named Ip Man, which is based on the life of Grandmaster Yip (Ip) Man.

Those who have read my posts before know I do Wing Chun Gung Fu, which Grandmaster Yip Man was a legend in. He's famous for being Bruce Lee's teacher, but also lead an interesting life during hard times in China.

He's also the teacher of his sons, Ip Chun and Ip Ching, who taught my master Samuel Kwok, so many of you can imagine my personal interest is quite high in this film. I also found out one of my peers in my Wing Chun classes was an advisor to the martial arts in this film, which is pretty cool.

I lately saw Danny Boyle's (Trainspotting and 28 Days Later) latest film Slumdog Millionaire about a young child from the Mumbai slums who manages to win the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. Of course, the story isn't just about the game show, but about the life Jamal Malik has lead and how it relates to him answering questions on the show.

It's based on the book Q and A by Vikas Swarup. Critically, this film couldn't really have done much better. Not only has it been acclaimed, but it's been sweeping awards left, right and center.

I've been lucky enough to have already seen the film and without doubt it really does live up to the hype surrounding it. It's got pretty much everything, from rousing and inspiring characters and plot, to some of the seediest and darkest aspects of the slums. Acting is great from the kids through to the adult versions of the characters. As for the main actors involved, Dev Patel puts in an assured performance and will certainly be a star in the future if given the roles. Anil Kapoor is great as the presenter of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire, by adding depth and a lot of character to what could have been a very small role. Irrfan Khan is great as the detective, I'm a fan of his work and the lead actress (forgot her name, but like Dev Patel it's her first film) is solid in her role.

For me, it's a must watch, and possibly the best film I've seen this year and one of the best I've ever seen.

Dev, did you see the film about your sifu's teacher? I didn't see it at our local cinema so i'll have to wait for that to come to dvd.

I saw The Spirit yesterday. Don't watch it unless you really like cheesy dialogue/acting and over the top Sin City/Film Noir effects (yes i know it's done by Frank Miller). I enjoyed it, but probably because it was so bad it was good. Highlights of the film, Eva Mendes oozing sex appeal and Samuel L Jackson dressed as a Nazi in a scene that has to be seen to be believed (very funny bit it was too).

Had to bring this thread back from the dead after I watched District 9 today.

Simply put, a brilliant scifi mockumentary film that is a much watch for pretty much everyone. I won't detail what it's about as imo you should watch this without knowing pretty much anything like I did :D

Another film to recommend is Kaminey, one of the recent Bollywood/Indian films. Excellent film about a couple of identical twins who don't get on or keep in touch, but their choices in life causes them to cross paths. Many have compared it to a Tarentino or Guy Ritchie film, due to it's stylistic nature and scenarios.

And to Jim who asked me about a film Ip Man (who was Bruce Lee's master) back in January :D I've seen it and it's a good watch. The film itself was fairly typical martial arts affair, but the fight scenes are excellent and very faithful to Wing Chun kung fu.

If you like horror films, I advice you the films of Georges Romero, living-dead/zombies' dad ...

I know it's not a movie, but the TV Show to watch at all costs is The Wire, and if you're not in a country where English is the first language, you MUST watch it in original version (with subtitles) ... after that, you'll need some time before managing to watch other series again because of the quality of The Wire. It's a slow rythm serie, the story is built on several seasons, and it becomes bigger and bigger. Probably the best TV show ever !!

Some weeks ago, I watched for the first time Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction (I saw it once on TV when I was a lot younger, at the age when movies don't interest you, you prefer playing with your toys, and so, it's like if I never watched it before) of Tarantino. They are classics, must-see movies of course.

I also watched two movies of Guy Ritchie: Snatch and RocknRolla. The first one could easily be put among the classics category. The second one disappointed me, it's actually the same movie, in a different context, but the same kind of characters, the same kind of off-voice telling the story, he simply made a copy-paste of Snatch. And only then, I noticed that he always uses the same kind of camera moves, special effects, etc when I discovered that Sherlock Holmes was also from Guy Ritchie.

Am a bit of a movie geek, so here goes:

My favorite movies off the top of my head are probably:

One flew over the cuckoo's nest
Apocalypse Now
A Clockwork Orange
Schindler's list
Fargo

I'll say that I think all of those fall in to the 'must c' catagory. Some very good movies I've seen lately and would recommend to anyone are:

Moon:

Sci Fi from 2009 with Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey.

Shutter Island:

Loved this

La Haine

French movie from the 90's.

In Bruges

Playwright Martin McDonagh's first film I believe. It's a dark comedy and I absolutly love it.

Gallipoli

Anti-war film from the 80's, Mel Gibson's first big role I think.

Glengarry Glen Ross

Great movie if you're into movies based on sharp and snappy dialogue.

Zack and Miri make a Porno

Seth Rogen movie, very funny!

I saw The Devil's Reject 2 days ago. I liked it. Must see for the horror movie fans :)

Also I didn't see Dark Knight back in 2008 thinking that it would be the same old cartoon stuff between Batman and the Joker. I just watched it few weeks ago and I must admit that I was wrong back in 2008. All the hype it gets is so deserving & now it one of my all time favorite movies :) Such a shame Heath Ledger will not be around to make another sequel in future :( Maybe Jim Carey could be the next Joker

Strangers was quite fkced up, but it really isn't that far from the truth...there are alot of people in America with psychological problems and live weird lives with weird fantasies.....Strangers is the movie with the masks right? and at the end the kid does somethin............right?

and Dark Knight was probably the best movie I've ever seen in the theaters, it had sooo much hype and lived up to it. However my favourites movies are Braveheart, Fight club, The Prestige, The Illusionist, Saw (all the series), Crash. There are more but those stand out.

My fave movie genre is drama because above all things I think the two most important things in a movie are respectively the acts and the story. That's why I never like movies with so many special effects like The Avatar or LOTR (I watched this movie three times and fell asleep just as many). The story could be a linear plot with simple daily activities ("Driving Miss Daisy") or a bit complex ("Crash"). "Before Sunset" mainly tells about a one-night date in Vienna and some of my friends think the dialogues are boring, but not to me.

I don't get to see as many new movies as I'd like to but the most recent one that I save on my notebook to sit by my other all-time favorites like "Dead Poets Society" and "Million Dollar Baby" is "Inglorious Basterds".

I just saw a horrible, boring, dull & utterly **** movie

Elephant (2003) IMDb link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363589/)

Avoid at all costs. Its just a proof that every one can make a movie if you have money. The ironic thing is that it has got a rating 7.3/10 :googly: And more so , it has won 5 awards. I just wanna say, all those who have ratted this movie so highly should consult some psychiatrist.

-----------------------------------------------

And Nalx, no disrespect but most of the drama movies are **** movies. The names you mentioned like 'Dead Poet Society' & 'Before Sunset' are good movies, but mostly the so called 'Art' or 'Drama' movies are just rubbish and boring. Some excellent examples are Mognolia (1999), V for Vanditta (2005), American Beauty, Lost Highway (1997), Eraserhead (1977) & the worst of the lot, The Holy Mountain (1973). I would like to know if you have seen these movies & what do you say about them

And one more thing, suspense, horror, adventurous, mysterious & thrilling-action movies also offer very good acting and story line. Few excellent examples 'Silence of the Lambs', 'The Shinning', 'The Dark Knight' & 'From Hell'

Well I've seen Elephant, and I while it is very 'different' I did still have a good experience with it. I see why someone would hate it, and I certainly wouldn't watch it again, but I do think it brings its point through in a very original and interesting way, which I kinda like. It isn't really very conventional since it doesn't really have a plot in the same way as normal movies do, but on the other hand that's what I kinda like about it.

Anyways, just finished watching a comedy from 2007 called 'Death at a Funeral', with among others the fantastic Ewen Bremner, and would definetly recommend this to everyone. Wonderful movie (Nothing like Elephant btw :))

I am trying to watch most of the movies of Scorsese after watching Shutter Islands few days/weeks ago.

And I'm litterally a big fan:
- Gangs of New York is amazing, an epic story with Scorsese creating his own history of New York ...
- After Hours, or how to make a great movie about a man who is very unlucky. This movie almost got me scared (it's not an horror movie, and it's quite funny) because of the ambiancy sometimes, if you're claustrophobic, don't watch this movie, everything happens in just 2-3 streets, and it looks like the main character can't exit.
- Bringing out the dead, an incredible performance by Nicolas Cage, this movie looks like there is no real scenario, but at the end, you just enjoyed a great movie.
- Aviator, well, I saw this movie a long time ago, but I didn't know it was from Scorsese, just saw it.
- The Departed, a good movie, not his best, but yet another good moment.

I still have to watch Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Mean Streets and Goodfellas.

I'd also like to watch No Direction Home: Bob Dylan (not a movie) as I'm a fan of Bob Dylan but I never managed to find it.

Though they're far from bad for some reason, I never want to watch most Scorcese's movies for the second time, let alone to save it in my laptop.

For many people (and critics) Raging Bull is the best movie about sport, but IMO Eastwood's Million Dollar Baby is much better. Then there was Goodfellas, but to me when you've watched The Godfather, you've seen all there is needs or worths to be seen.

Departed is a very good movie. But it's plot (how several stories eventually linked one to another towards the end) is similar to Crash. Heck, when I first saw it, it felt like watching Crash again, only this time instead of a city, the stories took place on several countries.

His only movie that I saved is Taxi Driver. I love this movie though I can't exactly say why. Perhaps it's because of De Niro's convincing acting, perhaps it's because of Cybil Shepperd's blue eyes, I don't know...

No offense taken, Zeekay. Most drama movies are ****? Well, to put it into perspective, most of professional football players are **** too, right? But does that stop us from watching football? IMO only by watching Napoleon Dynamite and the likes can one appreciate really good movies. But then again you can't expect everyone to agree upon one thing.

Of those movies you mentioned I had watched some of them. I don't remember many things from Magnolia except it being a very long movie (about 3 hour long) and Tom Cruise's line "respect the cock!"

American Beauty is one of my all time favorites too, an achingly beautiful story with strong casts. On the other hand, only the late what's-his-name (the Joker guy) stood out on Dark Knight.

As a kid I could be easily frightened by horror movies. I remember hiding behind my dad's back, watching Friday the 13th TV series, when the story almost reached its climax. But not anymore. At best I was startled, mostly by the sound/music, but it never scares me anymore. The closest thing I get to being scared is Silence of the Lambs. I remember watching this movie alone in my boarding house when all my friends had gone home on Eid Mubarak's holiday. Seeing Hopkins outwitted the guard makes me a bit nervous when I need to take a dump that night. Haha.

The Shining? You mean the one based on Hitchkock's story and starred by Jack Nicholson? I've watched it once though the only thing I remember from the movie is the scene where his son pedalling his bike to the haunted kitchen. Nicholson did okay but even when he finally went nuts, trying to kill his wife and son, he wasn't half as frightening as Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs.

Actually The Departed is an American remake of a Hong Kong trilogy called Infernal Affairs. Whilst for obvious reasons you may not find Infernal Affairs particularly new now, I would definitely recommend it as they are superb films.

There is one horror movie I still can't watch nowadays ...
The movie is called "It". It's about a clown who kills children (the children are the only ones to be able to see him, I mean to see "it" if I remember).

This movie isn't gore, there is no blood (I say that from memory) because it was a movie done for TV. I watched it when I was 7 or 8 (well, not entirely), and I shouldn't have done that.

I tried to watch it again few years ago, but that recalled me how frightened I was when I watched it for the first time and I didn't watch this movie entirely again.

I'm unable to tell you if it's a good movie or not, I'm unable to tell you if I was afraid because of the ambiancy or just because I was too young, all I know is that I will probably never watch this movie again in my life !! :D

PS: I just read that they're going to make a "remake", or another adaptation of the Stephen King's book, for theatres/cinema ...

Damn, I just re-read my posts and realised I made two mistakes. First I was referring to Before Sunrise, and not it's sequel Before Sunset. The second one is even more embarassing. What I really meant when I was blabbing about a movie similar to Crash was Innaritu's Babel, not Scorcese's The Departed. How on earth did I mixed it up, I honestly have no idea. I certainly have finished the process of growing up and entering the growing OLD phase now..

Anyway, I don't know if this has been asked before but can somebody give me some suggestions about football-related movies? Preferably of drama genre, not comedy like Shaolin Soccer.

I remember watching "When Saturday Comes" on TV when I was a kid. All I can recall is that it's about a man who despite having real talent struggle with alcoholism.

You should watch 'The Damned United' from 2009. It's about the English manager Brian Clough's time at Leeds United (Back when Leeds was a big team). It stars Michael Sheen (Players Tony Blair in the Queen, and Frost in Frost/Nixon) who's an actor I really like.

Definetly worth a watch.

Watched Inception yesterday at the cinema and must say it's a must watch for anyone, a truly remarkable film, leaving me almost speechless at the end. It really is an all time great.

Also finally got around to watching Kick Ass, which I really thought was quite good, though wasn't quite expecting it to be quite as violent as it was. It's odd mix of humour and superheroes works well though and for any fan of comic books/superheroes, it will entertain.

Another one to recommend is a Batman animated movie, called Under the Red Hood. A superb and dark tail about Batman and despite it not being too famous, an excellent film for any Batman fan.

Man, i can't wait to see Inception. Nolan never lets me down. You got me all wired up now.

About Kick-Ass, i would go as far as to declare it a landmark in the particular genre. You got to hand it to the guys who made a love letter to comics but also had a taste for self-sarcasm and mockery. The girl steals the show, Nick Cage was finally at his comical best and the climax at the end is bloody awesome! The comic little brother of Sin City. I loved everything in it.

Anyone into docs? You gotta see "KING OF KONG", especially if you are into video games. It's about the world record on Donkey Kong. It will change your mind forever in what has to do with video games. You see the movie and you don't believe that these people actually exist. Serious stuff, really.

Just watched it a couple of days ago, absolutly love it. Some of those guys are just unbelievable, but noone beats Billy Mitchell. Check out this MTV spot on him: Billy Mitchell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n0kNMGtub30)

Another movie I watched a while back that I'd recommend is Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad), it's the same guys that did City of God and it shows. Definetly worth a watch (And it's Ronaldinho's favorite movie believe it or not).
