Why MUST they play? It's set attitudes like this that stops the side evolving. Flamini played better than both Gattuso & Ambrosini last season and should start ahead of one of them in midfield. Not to mention we all saw how bad things were when Gattuso & Ambrosini were in midfield together because of their limitations as players. One or the other, not both. Besides if we end up playing 4-2-3-1, we won't play all of them anyway.

Weighing up form & fitness, Flamini is still better than the pair of them. Playing him at RB (because we don't have a true back-up player now Oddo's gone) is just a complete waste. Why not play Ambrosini or Gattuso at RB?

mrki, sorry to say Corluka joined Spurs for just £8.5 million!

I agree with u on the fact that why must they play, but u and I both know that Carlo will always play them instead of other players. Lets hope Carlo won't do so this year.

It makes you wonder if Carlo would still play Flamini at RB if he had a proper right-back to cover Zambrotta.

If we're to get anywhere this season, Flamini's energy in midfield is going to be vital.

Check out Chievo buying Kerlon, that's quite something. Can't wait to see what he can bring to Serie A.

yeah I am so surprised how'd he go to Chievo. Also nice to see Diego Millito back at Genoa. A Romanian star Moti has signed with Siena too. There has been ALOT of transfers today.

Milan Leave Nesta Out Of UEFA Cup
Milan have confirmed their squad for the 2008/09 UEFA Cup competition and Alessandro Nesta will not be taking part.
»Comments (28) Print This Story Send To A Friend Contact Us galleria zoom The former Italian international has been suffering from a back problem which wasn’t thought to be serious, but he was not included to play for the Rossoneri in Europe.

This has led to rife speculation that Nesta will be out of action for the whole season and that he may even consider retirement.

Milan have always stated the back problem was nothing to dangerous but leaving Nesta out seems to suggest that something is not right.

The rest of the team makes the list and old war horses like Paolo Maldini and Giuseppe Favalli have been included by Carlo Ancelotti.

Here is the 25 man squad which the club have submitted to UEFA:

Goalkeepers: Dida, Abbiati, Kalac.

Defenders: Maldini, Kaladze, Zambrotta, Jankulovski, Favalli, Senderos, Bonera, Darmian, Pasini, Antonini.

Midfielders: Emerson, Gattuso, Pirlo, Ambrosini, Flamini.

Strikers: Pato, Inzaghi, Seedorf, Borriello, Kaką, Shevchenko, Ronaldinho.

The Rossoneri will be challenging for the UEFA Cup this term and they are amongst the favourites to win the tournament but they will need to find some form after a poor start to Serie A.

Milan Leave Nesta Out Of UEFA Cup
...

This UEFA Cup list only covers the first 2 stages of the competition, teams get to submit a new list in the new year to take advantage of the winter transfer window.

Reports that Nesta will be out for the season or even retire are ludicrous. He's on course for a return at the end of the month and not playing in the UEFA Cup means he'll only have to play in Serie A once a week. Not playing midweek means he'll have plenty of time to recover from games and build him up nicely for the new year.

Strikers: Pato, Inzaghi, Seedorf, Borriello, Kaką, Shevchenko, Ronaldinho.

Seedorf is listed as a striker on our official site as well... I simply failed to understand why we are considering a quintessential midfielder as a striker!!! :p146:

Because, about a month ago it was:

Doesn't exactly inspire you to think you have much depth there. I don't even count Kaka as a pure striker either.

$240 million for CR
http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11095_4086955,00.html

Seriously, we might be looking at the beginning of the end of football as we know it. It's only a matter of time before we start seeing bankruptcies of MAJOR clubs, like Liverpool and Arsenal as they try to keep up with the insane owners in the EPL. Meanwhile, viewerships of other leagues like Serie A and La Liga will decline if the EPL keeps getting crazy owners who'll spend anything to get a new toy. Things are quickly OVERHEATING and I don't see any way of stopping it. I hate the EPL with every ounce of me....

I assume you hated Serie A when Italian clubs were doing exactly the same thing in the late 80's - mid 90s'. Obviously the prices have changed in the extreme, but Italian clubs had owners buying whoever they wanted, investing millions in an era when such spending was thought not possible. I assume you hated Milan too when Berlusconi was buying anyone in sight and breaking transfer fees for people like Lentini. Not to mention the outrageous spending of clubs like Parma, Sampdoria and in particular Lazio in the early 00's when they spent something ridiculous like £200 million in a couple of summers. Also, what about Inter, they spend a large amount of money each year on players. While for some of these clubs their previous spending has almost crippled them, they still survive and the same thing will probably happen in England where some clubs will fall but most will still carry on running. So to say it's the death of football is a bit over dramatic, especially when everything is cyclical. Leagues have their time at the summit of world football and then fall away only to come back again in 10 or 20 years time. This same thing will probably happen in Russia too.

If a club is in a mediocre state and a mega-millionaire wants to pump all his money into the club, aslong as precautionary measures are taken, then most clubs will sell up for their moment in the limelight. There is a rule about that says if so many foreign owners buy premier league clubs then something happens, it was mentioned on tv recently but i didn't fully understand it to be honest. Apparently they were encouraging the English F.A. to do something about it before the majority of clubs are foreign owned. Maybe the F.A. lose control of the league if this happens, not sure.

Never said it was the death of football, just maybe the end of football as we know it. In reading what i said, I should have left out the part of me hating the EPL, because it sounds like my issue with the crazy amounts of money going around is only a new phenomenon and only occurs in the EPL. (I mean I DO hate the EPL, but that's another story ;) )

My problem is more of things just getting disgusting in terms of how can one person be worth $240 million - and that's just for a transfer fee! You can correlate what seems to be happening in EPL with what happened in Serie A, and I won't argue so much against that. But $240 million?!? Things are getting exponentially more obscene.

And I'm not so sure that football is as cyclical as you say.

Both Jim and Russo-Neri have fair points in this debate about the ridiculous money being thrown around in football. While I agree with Jim that the trend has happened in the past (whether it be Italy or Spain and now England), I think Russo-neri's argument that football is changing is very true.

When Berlusconi took over Milan, he had his personal gains from becoming the owner, most notably using calcio to his political advantage. However, he did take the club he supported and save them from ruin, and any of us probably would do the same if we had the chance. Moratti and his father have a history with Inter, and few can doubt their support for the club from a footballing perspective. Similar to the Agnelli family, who lived in Turin and have always had close ties to Juve. The same cannot often be said about those like Abramovich or Suleiman, who have little or no ties at all to the clubs they take over, and simply want a new hobby (or business depending on how you view it). The clubs simply seem to lose their identity and football passion, and become a rich man's toy.

The other issue is the inflation in football, which is ridiculous. The sums of money now being thrown around simply make the game more difficult to appreciate as it devalues the football itself. Players are celebrities and it's not so much the quality of a player people appreciate, but his marketing potential (Beckham is a prime example, while Pirlo who is one of the most talented players ever is highly underappreciated).

I'm not too keen on the direction the modern game has taken. England isn't to blame for the current climate, but the footballing world in general is as this has been a long time coming.

Agreed. I wish it was possible to legislate against foreign ownership, although I suppose the EU wouldn't allow it. I'm usually dead set against 'nationalist iniatives' in football (such as non-EU quota, the 6+5 rule etc.), but I do feel it's becomming a nuisance in the world of football with all these takeovers by American, Russian and now Arab billionaires. It'd be a good idea if the Italian clubs made an (gentlemen's) agreement not take sell out to foreign buyers.

Koeke
03-09-2008, 07:06
I agree with Milan 1983 aswell
Those billionaires don't care what team they buy they just want to buy a team. That investors group tried to buy practically every single top team in EPL before they finally bough Manchester City.

It'd be a good idea if the Italian clubs made an (gentlemen's) agreement not take sell out to foreign buyers.

Such an agreement is very difficult what's considered a foreign buyer? If it excludes every non-italian ownership then it's isn't legal nor binding, they have no leverage what if an italian owner wants to sell and sells it to a foreigner, since the seller leaves the stage of football other teams can't do anything at all. Or what if a owners signs it and, he dies and his heirs want to sell it, again there isn't any repercussion possible and that gentlemens agreement is useless becoz the one that signs it is gone and the new owner isn't going to sign.
so problems are
a) in the European Union regulations (what are a good thing)
b) what if a company based in Italy buys a team but that company is owned by foreigners? That company is italian so that's ok then but the end result is the same...

goal.com has an article on
Calcio Debate: Who Spent Best In Serie A This Summer? (http://www.goal.com/en/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=847607)

I think looking at it and seeing that of the top 5 we've spent the LEAST...kinda reinforces my view that this has been a "PR Mercato",
i.e management has spent little but on BIG NAMES ($heva, R80, Zambrotta) to placate the angry fans

At the start of the summer we needed:
1) To improve width (good wingers or fast skillful wing backs)
-We've sort of placed a band-aid on this problem with the acquisition of Zambrotta. Antonini is a good squad player and we might have done better in keeping Abate. However there are questionmarks over Zambrotta's form (to me Bologna isn't a REAL test) and his physical ability (PACE, STAMINA) will decline sooner rather than later.......my preferences aside, it seemed common sense to buy someone younger, faster and more skillful like Vargas, Rafinha or Alves or even to scout a hotshot South American speedster. To me Zambrotta, with all due respect to him because he STILL is a fantastic player-is the cheap way out. Seeing Inter getting Quaresma- a demand of a serious coach like Mourinho hurt too.

2)A WC GK- Dida is the most talented of the three we have and that says a lot. Abbiatti is and will never be anything special. He won't give up soft goals and was cerntainly not to blame for the loss but he won't offer anything special. He can't save us. Goals that are generally supposed to score WILL score with him between the sticks. Kalac =0.

3)ST- To me $heva is old, slow and past it. He has lost his legendary pace and his shot selection of late is worse than Paloschi's. He IS however a "Milan Legend" (note the quotation marks) and will excite many who will get nostalgic because of his past heroics. To me (formerly his biggest fan and once equated him with Ronaldo :eekani: ) his mere presence is an insult to us both morally and in footballing terms. As much as I disliked the Idea of Adebayor I would have welcomed him more as a player with pace, potential and POWER rather than the premiership assault victim. Even more disturbing is the fact that Ancelotti HIMSELF has indicated in interviews how he feels about $heva. I fear, if the order of subsitutions vs Bologna is anything to go by that the powers that be have coerced him to place $heva on the field even to the detriment of Pato :5milan:

4) CB- I actually like Senderos :guw: but he's no Nesta that's for sure. Milan's defense minus Nesta isn't pretty. I hope he enhances our tradditionally weak defense of set pieces.

5)Flamini- this one has the lot of us singing management's praises but ANOTHER CDM ARE YOU KIDDING ME :wth: ?? I mean kudos for shipping Brocchi out and all but what are we to do with Rino, Ambro, Pirlo and Emerson.....Rino had a poor year that's for sure but ONE bad season doesn't justify replacing a mainstay of the team like Gattuso....and it certainly isn't a priority over the other needs that we have.

Flamini is GREAT make no mistake and he does the job of Rino, Ambro and to some extent Pirlo better BUT he wasn't needed....unless of course the intention was to field him as a fullback in which case there are many better.......aaah but therein lies a tale.....he came for free :wallbang:

6) Ronaldinho. The wildcard. The player who will make this whole post look like utter and complate nonesense if (again "IF" ) he gets back to his pre-2006 form. Of course he clogs up a spot that is relatively full with Kaka and Seedorf (much like Flamini's arrival at CDM) and he might have to play out of position or have other players out of position, which may not be a bad thing but on the other hand could potentially be our undoing. ATM Kaka is the best CAM in the WORLD and though he is probably also the most versatile attacker I have seen in a long time, he plays in exactly the same position as R80 and has never seemed to click on the field with him.

7)Borriello- a player who passed the 12 goal mark ONCE in his career....now touted by Galliani as being better than Huntelaar :faint: He may well be, but this is the seventh uncertainty

8)Viudez/Cardaccio- unproven in the big leagues and AGAIN arriving at a very cheap price.....I won't comment on these guys until after the season, but a rule of thumb is that the best young talents are heard of looong before they go to big teams....we all heard of Pato and Kaka before they came to Milan......

In reality we only needed four players , a gk, a FAST SKILLFUL fullback and an out-and-out striker (Eto'o, Adebayor, Drogba, Huntelaar) and a good CB.
Of course we might have had to $plash quite a bit and our transfers might have been closer to 60M Euro than 30....but given the fact that we were decidedly the WORST of the top 5 doesn't this seem logical??

mrki

Dinho - in his debut game he:
-asisted for goal
-in first half made 2 perfect passes to Pippo but pippo missed one and was late for one ( the one with looking the other way)
-created 300% chnce for TRAITOR $heva
-earned penalty that wasnt given, CLEAR penalty
-2nd half, one 100% chnce for Pippo who misses from 5 meters, shoots at GK
-----------------------------------------------------------

Trust me, Dinho is a phenomenon, he cant loose what he has in himself. We hit a jackpot.

flamini - 300 points transfer, brilliant player. Versatile and can play fullback.
Zambro - still one of the best fullbacks in the world
-----------------------------------------------------------

the rest is pure crap, except maybe, MAAAYBE Senderos, who might do well in more static game of serie a.

ok, well now that the window is oficially closed, i'll give my mercato ratings to the top 5 clubs of italy..... i'll start w/ AC Milan...(each post will be kinda lengthy)

Milan 7.5/10- This is undoubtedly a huge improvement from the last 2 mercato where id give a 3 and a 1. However that being said there are still huge holes. Coming into this season, milan embarassingly finished 5th in a WEAK serie A. Juv off promotion, fiorentina and roma cannot compete financially with milan. Only inter should have been a real challenge over a long season. However what happened happened, the key is to move on and become smarter because of. Milan needed to get younger first and foremost. Get a real CF, reinforce midfield, sign 2 quality defenders, and a gk. Doing this all while adding youth to there depth, and creating some sort of wide play. I would have proposed eto'o/berbatov for CF, flamini in mf, zapata, d. alves, and boruc. Sure it would have cost more, but if milan is to be a top club, they ned to spend on occasion, like we did in 2001/2002.
-I'll break down the signings like this 7/10 attack
-9/10 mif
-5/10 defense
-In attack we added ronaldinho....clearly a world class talent, but not te player milan needed. Milan needed a player ot bang goals in, not another playmaker. For the CF position, borriello was brought back... a talent, but largely an underacheiving 1 with 1 positive season at age 26. A definite gamble, and 1 milan did not need to take after the likes of oliviera, ronaldo and gilardino flopping.... Finally they brought back sheva, a player who was useless at chelsea, he may add something to the squad but i think he's a step in wrong direction. Instead of bringing in a younger FASTEr option, we bring in aslower declining one.
-Flamini was undoubtedly the coup of the summer. He is already better than gattuso and ambro, and he came on a free. His workrate, tackling, and surprising skill will enhance milans midfield which had been tired and slow in the last season
-Defense: where to begin. Zambrotta is undoubtely a great FB, but he is 31. He will improve the defense, but not for the lang haul. Antonini is a largely unknown quantity, but i reall doubt he'll be more than a squad player to change up tactics. Finally senderos, this 1 is interesting. He shows flashes of brilliance and is only 23. I think italian style will suit him, and he could be a steal.... if he turns out well, and we keep him, ill upgrade the rating of this mercato a point. Finally gk..... We have 3 keepers, none-wc. Hence we stil lack a true GK. Last eyars most gaping hole in defense was still unaddressed.
-Milan did enhance there squad, but they didnt enhance it fully, I still wonder if they can challenge for the scudetto. IF borriello can hold genoa form, IF Senderos can play to his potential, IF Abbiati can put a successful season than yes, milan will. But the purpose of a mercato is to bring in players that WILL do something, not question marks. and for that, i cannot rate milan higher than 7.5.

JUVENTUS- 7/10

On the surface milan had a much more successful mercato, however Juve without making too much noise, had a very efficient mercato. They could have gotten more cover, however, they did reinforce and enhance there squad. Coming into the mercato, it was clear they needed to reinforce there CM. Zanetti, nocerino and sissoko worked hard, and sissoko was a big of a surpirse, however they were still lacking. Also with aging stars like pavel nedved, del peiro, they needed to inject some youth. Finally the found a star in cheillini, however still needed to reenforce the defense.
attack- 7.5/10
midfield 7/10
defense 6/10
Signings in all 3 areas were solid, however known jumped out at you as having superstar potential, except the recalling of giovinco.
first...
-attack: Juve's biggest money signing came with Amauri. Amauri is a versitile enough to play with both del piero and trezeguet (and iquinta). I personally think they overpaid for a talented player who stil hadnt shown tooo much in his entire career. Undoubtedly, they did reenforce there attack, which was already good. The only question is, at that price, they could have gotten perhaps samuel eto'o or a better and perhaps younger CF. Giovinco, being recalled i think was the best move of the summer for juve. (I'm going to list him in attack). I think he's undoubtedly a star in the future, and one to take over del piero/nedved's playmaking duties. I hope to see him play this season (not against milan)
-Midfield, again they recalled marchisio, who they have high expectations for. And they signed christian poulsen. Poulsen, is an underrated player in my opinion. He is hardnoised with some technical qualities. He will fit nicely into juve's midfield scheme. Although i rate flamini higher, poulsen is good. Juve should lost points for not following through on signing flamini a player they clearly needed more than milan. Again he's not as exciting a signing as ronaldinho, but he is an efficient one
-finally defense: They brought in mellberg on a free. Mellberg is a solid defender and will enhance any teams defense. With cheillini and leggrotalie as the starters and mellberg as 3rd choice CB, they seem solid in back. Like nesta in milan, cheillini is a necessity. At LB, they r still vunerable. Juve opted to go with youth, and bring de ceglie back. Giving them two young LBs of promise. Although either could turn into future azzuri LB, and great defender, now they r weak. Perhaps they would have been better suited signing an exerienced 29-31 year old LB to platoon with 1 of the younger two. Right now, they clearly sit with a weakness on left flank.

-it is also to be noted, juve signed iago, the highly rated barca youth winger, perhaps a future replacement of nedved/camorenesi.... Juve still have holes, and r thin, especially if they sustain some injuries, peticularly in back (like to cheillini now). They did improve there squad, however would need ALOT to fall into place to challenge for scudetto, similar to milan they r banking on certain players to play to potential, not to known capabilities. However the inclusion of all the youth in the squad, is a positive for the future....

next Inter

the 3 scores r not to be averaged. yeah i rate flamini as best signing but he was only MF signing.... we signed 3 attackers, so averaging his 9 and there 7 isnt an 8. Eitherway, im basing overall score on many factors.... for example.... coming into mercato we didnt "NEED MF" so even if we got a 10/10 on signings there it doesnt mean we had a good mercato if we didnt sign any attackers (our weakness) and then ust breaking down sectional scores for ****s and giggles..

Inter with the late mercato additions, perhaps the best. Of all teams they needed the "LEAST". They are two time champions, clearly 1st place needs less than 5th. That being said they r not w/o holes.
I rate inter 8.5!

-Not to be discounted is the addition of a top quaity coach, mourinho. Mourinho is a winner, he's never finished below 2nd in league, and infact rarely lost league. I expect he'll adapt to italy fast, and bring excitement to serie A. Perhap the biggest knock on inter was there tactics in big games (CL v. liverpool, against us etC) Mourinho will fix that.

-They brought in 3 first team players all of whom address there weakness. I cant really break down positionly rating considering they signed 2 wingers and a CM, so i'll just explain.

With mourinho's swing to a 4-3-3, they were desperatly in need of playmakers on flanks. LAst year no1 would accuse inter of dancing around, they were very pragmatic, but successful at it. They won with power, not grace. They signed the best winger on the market, quaresma and the best winger in italy lst 2 seasons, mancini. Along with figo (read: Inter's age answer to pippo/favalli/maldini) and balotelli, they now have appropriate flank, width options. How fast quaresma adapts to italy is unknown, but w/ figo there helpin him, i think itll be quicker than we expect. They may have paid alot fo him, but he is 24 and considered one of most promising talents. If he turns more onsistant, no1 will question the transfer fee. 2nd Mancini is proven in serie A. He is not a perfect player, but he is efficient and adds flair to there team. more importantly there 2 signings give mourinho a wealth of options. 4-3-3 (2 wingers or 1 winger) 4-4-2 with 2 wingers or 1 winger or no wingers. He can really change his tactics however he sees fit.
-3rd signings sulley muntari is my favorite of the bunch. I mentioned him on this board al ong time ago and people said avg player. I think he is indeed a top class plaeyr. He turned 24, 1 week ago, so he adds much needed youth to tha midfield. He is technical, versitile, put also powerful. him + cambiasso who is now 28, could be 1 of the best CM combos in serie A for a few years. wih viera aging, and stankovic and dacourt avg, this was a good addtion.
-the only negative, was the inability to capture lampard, or perhaps some1 a little more offensive. However muntari may prove to be a better serie A player than frank (although i would have liked to see an english player try abroad)
-not to be lost is the addition of adriano, he is the ideal CF type for mourinhos system. I think he could be due for a big year, however with his head its anyones guess....
-finally defense, this is where i knock inter, they had the best defense in serie A last yea, and still possess best FBs (maicon, maxwell, chivu) However there CD has been hit by injuries, they clearly could have used cover here, and didnt get some. With som luck for us,the injuries could cost them lots of points early on.

-Inter are still the team to beat, they have the ability to grind out a result better than anyone in top 4. They r not unbeatable, but they are more consistant than anyone else in serie A. They reinforced, and will be a factor in scudetto race all season

finally, because im tired, and well i need to get back towork I'll condense roma and fiorentina to 1 post.

Roma- 6/10
fiorentina 7-10

roma- i think addition of menez last minute may help them forge about loss of mancini but it still points out fact tey bought a young (probably more talented player) but not nearly as good player as of TODAY. Baptista i also think was a good signing, he will fit spaletti's tactics, and i think will score a fair amount of goals. Perhaps a return to beast of sevilla. And lastly, keeping aquilani was a huge move for them. Theystill englected there need for a true CF. With totti, still not healthy and aging, they need some1. neither vucinic, baptista or menez r that player.... Still roma has de rossi, mexes, juan, panucci, doni and a list of other very good players, they will stay top 4, but farther off the title.

Fiorentina. They enhanced there team all around. Gilardino will rediscover form for them, and give them a consistant presense infront of goal. Vargas was the LB Milan and juve should have signed. Felipe Melo is a promising young MF. Fiorentina also has lots of youth already, osvaldo, montolivo, pazzini ec etc etc. Last year the grew up fast and took a top 4 spot. I expect more growng pains largely because other teams reinforced more so, but if this team stays together they could win scudetto in a few years.

1. Zambrotta is an absolute right choice for a full back, someone who can actually defend and attack. Having some of the more attacking fullbacks you named will expose our already fragile defense. However, we could have done better on the other flank with a more attacking full back or simply keeping abate. Jaku is just too inconsistent.

2. Dida is talented no doubt but abbiati is no less talented. Abbiati is the BEST keeper i have ever seen in a 1-1 situation and has simply the fastest reflex for a goalkeeper but sadly like dida, he seem to have lost all that. I am not sure we will see the same abbiati as the one in the past. We do need a WC keeper but our management doesn't want to splash out on that.

3. Sheva is just a romantic transfer, i don't mind him taking a spot on the bench but that's about it. Pato and inzaghi should play ahead of him.

4. No comment on Senderos but we could have done better and this is an area where we need improvement.

5. Flamini wasn't needed? You must be kidding. I will drop rino and ambro in a heartbeat to play Flamini, if we are going to play with 2 DM in a lot of games then we need at least 3 DM to rotate. Emerson is just a backup.

6. Ronaldinho is starting to show his class, getting him is simply a smart buy. And the fact that kaka is getting injuried pretty often and overplayed in the past few seasons with seedorf getting much stick for his performances, we can surely do with ronaldinho.

7. Borriello, a crazy buy IMO. He did play decently before he do drugs and while at genoa but i am not sure he is what we need. Another gila?

8. Nothing to comment about some kids, not sure how good they are. We do buy some youngsters every year and eventually they just disappear.....

the 3 scores r not to be averaged. yeah i rate flamini as best signing but he was only MF signing.... we signed 3 attackers, so averaging his 9 and there 7 isnt an 8. I was totally kidding about the 'average' thing and for the most part agree with your post :grinser:

Dinho - in his debut game he:
-asisted for goal
-in first half made 2 perfect passes to Pippo but pippo missed one and was late for one ( the one with looking the other way)
-created 300% chnce for Sheva
-earned penalty that wasnt given, CLEAR penalty
-2nd half, one 100% chnce for Pippo who misses from 5 meters, shoots at GK
Trust me, Dinho is a phenomenon, he cant loose what he has in himself. We hit a jackpot.

We can't be gushing and calling him a phenomenon after one game, especially a loss against a promoted squad. Let's see if he can keep this up on a consistent basis.

However the inclusion of all the youth in the squad, is a positive for the future....

next Inter

I'd give Juve 5 at most.

- They brought in a striker that they didn't really need. their biggest transfer was for a area they didn't need reinforcing. I also think he will be a little bit of a flop, especially considering he needs to deliver close to what DP/Trez did.
- On their midfield they also didn't bring in what they needed. With already three DM they brought in another one. Getting back giovinco was what they needed though, although I wonder how much he will end up playing.
- their defense didn't change much. Mellberg is just another number in the pot. De Ceglie a offensive improvement over Molinaro, but since he played much as a winger last season I see that position as a sore spot still.

He's been performing well at the early stages of French League this season. If he maintains his performance at this level, his price will massively increase next year, making it only very few clubs like Chelsea or Madrid can afford to buy him

He missed one thing: he didn't score ...
He had all in his feet to do it, instead of giving balls to Sheva and Pippo (2 times exactly the same), he could have adjust this pass in a shot, the GK didn't see anything 2 times, so if it was in the nets instead of Sheva/Pippo's feet (actually not in their feet as they didn't touch the ball lol) ...

There's no way we could or should have signed Berbatov. We simply can't compete with the big English club in the same way as before. Spending £31 million pounds on a 27-year-old lazy and moody striker like Berba isn't feasible for us. In fact buying players from England (English and/or playing in the EPL) is pretty much off-limits for all Non-English clubs, except maybe Madrid, Barca and Inter. And even those clubs know that players from the EPL are going to be over-priced (like Berbatov).

Rafinha and Thiago Silva, on the other hand, would've been VERY welcome additions.

The problem with Sanderos is that he is still in big question, in other occasion Milan really need very prooven world class quality defender.

Milan spent alot but they also got a lot (in this situation I am not sure if Milan spent more money than they got). Why can't Milan make a decesive transfer for a WC defender? It would cost a lot for sure but we DO need such player for our shaky defence!

My hope still remains that Milan will score more goals than they will concede in a game but till now they conceded more than they scored. :(

REALLY?!! u think we had an amazing tranfer campaign? I dont care what anyne says under no circumstances should milan lose at home to a relegation side OPENING DAY, especially with our 'wonderful transfers' or are the so perfect. m point wasnt they were bad (Although i'dargue some were overrated) simply that they werent the players MILAN needed to be a better squad.

Comparing who's in and who's out, the squad is a much better squad than last year.

Zambro for Cafu
Antonini for Serginho
Flamini for Brocchi
Sanderous for Simic
Borreillo for Gila
Sheva for R99
Dinho for Gourcuff

Seriously if u can't admit that those players are better than the ones that left, u are pretty funny.

Ofcourse, I would have wanted Drogba over Sheva, Gerrard over Seedorf, Essien to take over for Gattuso, Aqualiani to take over Emerson, Toni instead of Borreillo, Santacroce for Kaladze, De Silvestri for Bonera, Buffon for Dida, Vargas for Favalli, and C7 just coming over to join the fun.

But thats not gonna to happen.

We should really be thankful that at the least the team is changing for the better instead of listening to Galli saying Emerson is a WC player that will make a difference and since we will have Ronaldo playing for us in CL is like a new signing.

You guys can mock us all you want and sarcastically post as many ridiculous lineups as you want. It's very simple......nobody is asking for a FIFA 08 allstar lineup...but it would be nice to have some players who are CURRENTLY the best at what they do:

1)Zambro for Cafu

Problem:
ATM many rb's are better than Cafu because he's really old. HOWEVER when we got Cafu the level he played at was much higher than I'm expecting from Zambrotta for this season. He played well at Bologna mind you, but it will take a bit more convincing.
Alternative:
Alves: faster, fitter, set piece specialist, younger, stronger

2)Antonini for Serginho
See my above argument for Cafu and Zambrotta......only that this is even worse than the first one. Serginho's nickname was 'Il Concorde....because of his SPEED......why on earth have we replaced one of the fastest most skillful left backs since Roberto Carlos with this guy :wth:
Alternative:
ANY YOUNG, FAST, Skillful LB

3)Flamini for Brocchi

good replacement....no comments there.....only that Flamini doesn't replace Brocchi who was useless....he kicks out our two best CDM's......to me there is no justification to kick out Gattuso and Rino after only one poor season, where the team as a whole was poor anyway

Alternative: instead of stockpiling CDM's , how about a world class goal keeper???

4)Sanderous for Simic
good replacement....then again Simic hasn't been a starter for nearly four years...I have a hunch that Senderos is going to start a lot more than that.

Alternative: Zapata: proven, fast, solid and SerieA ready

5) Borreillo for Gila
Borriello is even more umproven than Gila. Gila = rubbish no doubt BUT HE had TWO high scoring seasons in Parma and one in Milan. Borri only crosses 12 goals per season once....last season :wallbang:

Alternative:
A REAL striker who has proven it at many levels (Eto'o, Berbatov, Ade, Drog)

6)Sheva for R99
A fit Ronaldo is better than anyone anywhere anytime....however $heva is useful to us now since he can actually play so I can't complain. Only that given R99's present poor condition almost any player who can walk/run is better than him atm. When Ronaldo recovers, and IF he resumes playing he may well cause us to regret accepting the traitor- who is atm RUBBISH :o

Alternative: Save the $heva money for a real striker and renew R99's contract :guw:

7)Dinho for Gourcuff
Gourcuff is still our player and was not a starter. This one makes the least sense of all because Dinho is expected to start. Even worse we have no place for three trequartistas so one of dinho, kaka or seedorf is going to be riding the pine

Alternative: Dinho money goes towards CB/ST/GK

REALLY?!! u think we had an amazing tranfer campaign? I dont care what anyne says under no circumstances should milan lose at home to a relegation side OPENING DAY, especially with our 'wonderful transfers' or are the so perfect. m point wasnt they were bad (Although i'dargue some were overrated) simply that they werent the players MILAN needed to be a better squad.

i think we had a great transfer campaign under these circumstances(uefa cup, very bad last season,etc..)

and yes i think that we can lose to anyone especially on the opening day..thats football my friend

totally agree with you..although this time we spent a lot more than we got(keep the salaries in mind too..)

good post although..

Ever considered that your expectations might be wrong? Why don't we see how things play out before you call this an inferior signing.

I'll fast forward to one of your points below where you say Senderos is an upgrade over Simic - but that Simic hasn't been a starter for 4 years. Tell me, just how much did Serginho start in recent years?

3)Flamini for Brocchi

good replacement....no comments there.....only that Flamini doesn't replace Brocchi who was useless....he kicks out our two best CDM's......to me there is no justification to kick out Gattuso and Rino after only one poor season, where the team as a whole was poor anyway

Alternative: instead of stockpiling CDM's , how about a world class goal keeper???

This is the point that bothers me the most. So you're saying that we are hijacking a position away from Gattuso or Ambro (I think you meant to say Ambro instead of Rino) by signing Flamini. This is EXACTLY the type of thinking that saw our team get stale over the years. Players were acting as if they were entitled to our starting XI and were never pushed to play harder in fear of losing their starting job. It's called COMPETITION and most clubs have it going on in every position. We shouldn't give a starting job to someone based on past performances - they should be earned! And most important of all - look at our CDMs. We have a 32 year old Emerson, a 31 year old Ambro, a 30 year old Gattuso. We also HAD a 32 year old Brochi. We have no one else. Have we learned nothing about letting our team get old? Look at our backline! We needed an infusion of youth so that we can keep going instead of riding Gattuso and Ambro to death at the team's expense.

4)Sanderous for Simic
good replacement....then again Simic hasn't been a starter for nearly four years...I have a hunch that Senderos is going to start a lot more than that.

Alternative: Zapata: proven, fast, solid and SerieA ready

No argument about Zapata. We apparently had no money left and could only sign a player via a loan with an option to buy next year. We should consider ourselves lucky that we were able to fill that criteria by getting a 23 year old player who has top flight club experience, CL experience, and International experience.

Similar to my reply on point #1, why don't we just sit back and see how Borriello actually performs before signing him off already. The man just scored 19 goals last season! He may end up being a bust, but his recent form (last season) suggests that at least there's hope for even more improvement.

This may sound harsh, but I won't even dignify this with a response.

Dinho gives us something this team did NOT have last season - OPTIONS! Kaka and Seedorf were severely overplayed last year and it resulted in Kaka constantly battling injuries and being forced to play because he was so important to us. Dinho give us options and allows Kaka to rest more if he needs it. I personally am a fan of anything that can help Kaka prolong his career. And if someone gets injured, we don't have all of our eggs in one basket the way we did last year. Plus, I bring up the point about competition. If Seedorf can't play as well as Dinho and Kaka, he shouldn't be starting. That's football.

I TOTALLY hear you that we still have shortcomings on our team - primarily in GK. But we couldn't fix everything in one season. That's unrealistic. I think we have enough to contend for the Scudetto. And next year, we'll be back in the CL and will have more money as a result to fill in those holes. I'm sorry for the long rebuttal, but your criticized EVERY signing Milan made this season - and that is just something I have to argue against....

actuall eto'o or adebayor were available for rate of dinho. Dinho better bette player.... but ur telling me eto'o pato, kaka isnt a better fit tactically for our troubles last 2 seasons.

you keep forgettign we made 30 mil in sales and coownership (possibly more) if we bought new goalkeeper, abbiati or dida (prolly former cause of value) would have been out..... wages? Dinho has highest wage.. if we brought a wc striker instead his wage wouldnt top that....? I'm just saying instead of giving milan more Redondos Rivaldos Ronaldos (tear) and ronaldinhos give us some players who actually fit needs and r on rise..... what was our best signing of last 8 years? KAKA.... he didnt have the name like rivaldo, cafu, ronaldo, even rui costa who as brilliant as he was... played 2-3 years as a starter for 30 mil thats a waiste.

before i hear ur 'youth doesnt win argument' whats 6-7 youthful signings going ot give us? We still would have nesta, maldini, gattuso, ambrosini, pirlo, pippo, kaka, seedorf, janku, oddo as players in squad. its not like im looking to overhaul the starting 11 for 11 guys under age of 21. But its clear we lacked energy and desire in our play last year... seedorf could care less about any match not againt a CL quality opponent. Same with pippo and others.....

what if intead of sheva and dinho and borriello, we sold borriello to roma. and bought eto'o + younger promising forward + energetic pacy winger....
instead of zambro and antonini, rafinha and vargas came in. Instead of abbiati we got frey (or boruc).

Well, people can say alot of stuff but the truth is that the MGT did alot this off season.

Now some of the moves might not be what we thought as the greatest move but whats done is done, just support the team.

I mean, years ago, a lot of us here probably wanted Saviola, Riquelme...but we ended up with Pirlo, Seedorf, RUi Costa and Pippo. Look at where they are now.

Then a few yrs ago, when we signed Kaka, I am sure some of us here would rather Milan sign other stars at that time, but looks how Kaka is playing now.

As for Zambro, guys, I remembered people here did not like the idea of getting Cafu, but once he did helped us settle for the RB position for close to 3 yrs. I trust that Zambro can do 5 yrs of good services for us. Then 5 yrs later, most likely there will be someone who is even better than D. Alves or Rafinha to come along.

I think after the 5-0 thrashing of Chelsea, Berlusconi's pride came out. He didn't like seeing his Milan being teased and pushed around so he sacrificed a bit and signed off Sheva and Senderos. I think the reason Sheva's deal was confidential is because he the PM of Italy and that most of the lawyers in Italy would want to follow his cash to make sure he isn't putting his money in places he's not supposed to...so that could be a reason why that deal was left confidential.

No we didnt :)

Pirlo was the star of Italy U21, Seedorf already won EVERYTHING with Ajax and Real Madrid, and was world class midfielder by all means. Rui was payed 40mln back then as he was one of the best playmakers in serie a and Viola idol, and Pippo was absolute striking class that was in a fight with Del Piero and Moggi so he was sold for also around 40 mln.

Kaka' was the best player of the Brazilian league and was wanted by all big clubs but Milan got him for cheap coz of Leonardo connections, and Zambrotta is still one of the worlds best fullbacks ( left and right ). He is 31, that is NOt too much for a defender. Those are all top class players, none of them was a gamble.

I don't know if signing unprooven Sanderos and unfit-and-bad-form Sheva can be connected to the pride. IF Berlu's pride came out, the two signings were something strange. Pride ---> cheaper and unfit players?

If Berlu's pride came out, he would have splashed his money to buy the right players with right quality that we need, WORLD CLASS defender (a must) and powerfull striker just like he (or Galliani said it?) told us before.

I think, the pride of Berlu is much much more than what we saw on signing the two players (Sanderos and Sheva). I am still confident, Berlu's interest in Milan these days is not like before.

Don't understand that bit, we've only got Senderos on loan so we've not spent £8.5 million on him

I can't see Corluka leaving Spurs after just 1 season, especially as he has one of his best mates in Modric there with him. If, by some chance, he was to leave next summer, Spurs will be asking for ALOT more than £8.5 million.

Can someone tell Kaka's agent to STFU? He's really pissing me off and spouting nonsense. It's always good to see him adding unnecessary speculation to things.
On a separate note, now that City have unlimited money, we'll see if players are more interested in the traditions and history of clubs, or if they'll go chasing the money.

We payed 3mln for loaning Senderos, and we will pay 7 mln more if we want to sign him. Or its 2 now and 8 later, something like this. So its around 10 mln.

Exactly, Tottenham asks for tons of money for their palyers and our chance was now. Well, either way, after Berlusconi bought back his friend $heva Milan couldnt buy non EU player anyway.

Man what are u talking about??

Senderos is 23,can u tell me a few players on that age that have played about 70 pl games and a cl final(coached by someone like wenger)?..just wait dude..

zambrotta a "second hand lion"???:haha::haha::haha:loool

tell me excactly where would thiago neves play?intead of whom?

do you have any clue how much did berbatov cost to sign him too?? is he really worth it??

thiago silva??where does he play?did u even know him before we wanted him??

you must be the only person that wanted simic and brochi(my god)!!or even cafu serginho(they're teens..) and gila??!!!!hahahaha

im sure that if it wasnt the bologna match u would say that dinho is sth like a two legged dog with no eyes or a second hand *****cat!!

To be honest with u,yes i would prefer mexes instead of senderos..and drogba instead of $heva..and cristiano ronaldo maybe,or buffon because abbiati is nothing i guess..

Zambrotta is a second hand lion... dont care if he is italian....
Berbatov is a proven goal scorer ( net Banger)... done it in Germany and England and for his National team... May be we dont watch the Bundes Liga...
He is worth every penny... Sir Alex hardly make Mistakes... Pippo in our starting eleven for a rebuilding program... it think not!!!!

I know we hav much respect for our great servants but we must also know and accept the fact that the hav past their time... if they want to hang around the club get coaching job with the youth ranks... Paolo and Pippo...

I am very much glad that we got rid of Simic, Gila and Company...

Thiago Neves... Fluminese... or some of us dont watch the south american leagues... he can be a good sub turn Starter... he can sure score from outside the box... and he is young and good, somthing that is not really associated with most of our starters...

Senderos... He is that glass brick in any building... he will crack under pressure... Wenger would not get rid of him if he had any promise... Wenger got tired of beating that dead horse so he past it on to someone else... but because we were desperate we fed from the bottom of the pond...
Thiago Silva would have been better...

Paolo and Pippo will always be legends here no matter what. That said their role should diminish proportionate to their physique.... The fact that we have acquired such rubbish replacements like $heva and Senderos (even though I like Senderos) means that we will STILL rely heavily on them both. To me their replacements should be of the calibre to immediately replace them, so that they will be called upon ONLY when absolutely necessary. Us relying on a 40 year old CB and a 35 year old striker is disgraceful

As I have said many times this whole mercato is a huge PR campaign with a lot of signings with little attention paid to quality, congruency and necessity.
One of the biggest needs is an appropriate goalkeeper which again we have to wait on.

Paolo and pippo will be great for another 10 years, then we can talk about reduction of minutes....

[quote[As I have said many times this whole mercato is a huge PR campaign with a lot of signings with little attention paid to quality, congruency and necessity.
One of the biggest needs is an appropriate goalkeeper which again we have to wait on.[/QUOTE]

what are u talking about, we had the best mercato...ever... EVER!

That new City's president is so rich that he has made a market list with Kaka,Fabregas,Messi,C Ronaldo and others to make a dream team.
I don't know if he gonna make hes dream true, but i have a big question......if can the best players of the world to play all of them in 1 squad? And of course to win everything.

Remember Real M with galactikos.

He can make a dream market list that includes Tiger Woods, Usain Bolt, or whoever comes to his mind. Kaka reiterates that if it's up to him, he'll never want to leave Milan. That at least can calm us down.

About other players, well, it's up to them. But Rome wasn't built in one night, and neither is a winning team. Even when your plan succeeds, just like the first era of madrid Galacticos, it has its own setbacks too, for example having two or more groups in the dressing room (Pavones and Zidanes). I think the lack of cohesiveness was the major reason why Madrid won nothing for about 3-4 years before Capello came.

nope it would hurt, im not convinced CR7 is good. DAlves and Quaresma are unproven. Wingers=weak

Cristiano Ronaldo - 42goals in 1 season doesn't convince you? that 42goals had it been for us would have gotten us into the Champions League and even mybe past Arsenal in that Champions League Match.
I'm not a big fan of Man Utd or Cristiano Ronaldo ( i personally hate his guts ) but statistic are statistics and his achievement is undeniable.

torres=crap, epl=crap.... when was last time they mad ANY noise in champions league?!

EPL = Crap?
Epl produced 3 teams in the Champions League Semi-Finals for 2 years in a row and this years Eventual Champions. Please dun embarass us and yourself with ur lack of football knowledge.

Dude.. are u just plain unrealistic / living in ur own world or just humouring us?

You are so wrong in your arguments. Yes CR7 scored 42 goals, but you forgot to mention that they were all Own Goals. It shouldn't count when you score in your own net 42 times!!!

Everyone knows that the EPL only won those three CLs because the EPL won the CL lottery which allows a league to bypass the early rounds of the tornament and go straight to the finals. If they had to go through ALL the rounds, do you really think they could win it all?

Dude.. are u just plain unrealistic / living in ur own world or just humouring us?

I don't see why Maldini and Inzaghi can't be great for another 10 years at least. Maldini's father Cesare played for Milan until he was 78 years old and only retired because his wife made him. And Paolo Inzaghi (Pippo's brother) has become a MilanMania legend because of his resilience to getting old.

Hands up anyone who shares this same sentiment..
( me hands down and shakes my head in disbelief )

Name me one team's mercato in history that wasn't better than ours!!! I dare you! I mean look at the numbers! We signed a total of 11 players with a combined 895 years of playing experience.

You are COMPLETELY WRONG to argue against both Milano84 and me. We both know what we are talking about. If you want proof of our brilliance, check out the link...

this is getting stupid...if this is really what you guys want to talk about go to one of the threads where this is supposed to go... like the Paolo Inzaghi thread...

otherwise, given this, and the fact that Summer Mercato is closed, we should just close the thread too...

An alternative way is to change the thread title to "Winter Mercato"...

I think this one is already too big... why don't we just open a new one for Winter Mercato?

I think I agree with you Sant. Opening a new thread will not only mean starting fresh (rather than letting this one grow even more), but it will hopefully help us get back to topic. This thread, as great as it has been, has on numerous occassions been about things irrelevant to the mercato and has veered off into directions of all natures.

Anyway, I leave it to the mods to decide :)
