Good. We need more clubs to be bankrupt so they could sell their talented players to us with cut price.

Real Madrid will go bankrupt sooner or later. Maybe we can get Kakā back then? :ilol:

--

Drenthe: I feel like he wouldnt be what we need. Our defence is not all too great at the moment, so I think a defensively competent (hopefully wordclass) fullback would be a better buy. Leo has said, however, that he is looking for a "terzino di spinta", so a FB who will push up offensively.
As for his height, I think it is quite acceptable. Fullbacks dont necessitate height as CB's do. Actually, they are probably the position which least necessitate height imo. It would be obvious though, that he should not be in the penalty box during corners (both offensive and defensive) :p231:

Slightly off-topic, but I have been wondering if all this Bale talk is just a prime example of "agent magic". You know, where a player's agent creates a situation out of 99% whole cloth and pretty soon, thanks to the Internet, that situation is considered as God's Own Truth (while it is really just Goal.com's Own Truth). This is part of an agent's job, of course, but it is always impressive to see it succeed so well. I could be wrong, but I really think that this is a case where the agent knows that: 1. the targeted team has obvious needs, 2. the Internet is ravenous for any kind of "news" 24 hours a day, and 3. English speaking websites love to pimp English players. So agent starts leaking "information" that he is in "talks" with a big European club about his client (possibly, just a "hey, how are you doing" at a restaurant--hey, it's "talking"), and the Internet and people like us do the rest. "Milan is linked with Bale!" Magic. Bale will probably get a pay raise out of it, and the agent his 10%, so it really is impressive.

Do you guy's think we are gonna BUY, not loan, someone else( a LB or ...) by 31 aug?
If we'll do that I bet it will be a surprise 4 us. Our transfer mercato is like the kinder eggs, we are related to many player in this world but in the end is a surprise for all of us.
This year mercato example:
- I think no one has think that will buy Cissoko from Porto, there were no romours before, and finally the deal went OFF so I still hope for a LB
- Onyewu was a surprise. who from this forum knew his situation from Standard?he was not related to milan before we got him
- Huntelaar. Our 1st choice was Dzeko, than L.Fabiano, than many other......
- Roma :)
- the youngsters are OK
Correctly me if I am wrong.

as of right now our mercato gets a big fat F. We lost kaka (which is ok if we made the correct moves, but we havent). We signed a CF, but he wasn't our first or second choice. and haven't reinforced our defense. Onyewu is NOT good, i am american ive seen his whole career... he's borderline at sampdoria/atalanta.... damn near embarassing at milan. I wouldnt care if it was just for depth but its clear we arent signing any other CBs. Of all our youngsters only abate looks up to it

Now What i think is happening is our management is gonna wait till august 31st to buy. To be honest, if it works i wont care... although itll cost us alot of point early, i cant blame Berlusconi for not wanting to pay an extra 5-10 million in a recession. Its poor business to pay that much extra for 1 month. If we sign van der vaart and a fullback or heaven forbid TWO fullbacks?!? Then hurray! But i can't help fear we wont sign anyone...

we took him on loan with an option to buy for 6 million euros in january. He was not good, we sent him back.

Its not like gourcuff who got some starts and sub appearances and showed he could play.... this kid never got on the field, presumeably, cause he was that bad... you can say carlo is at fault, but darmian, strasser even got on the field over him and the subs bench....

Barcelona may have seen (how I'm not sure) some potential in the player....which Carlo overlooked....:rollani: as was the case with the CD (Pique?) they aquired from Man U, that had such an impact at the tail-end of last season.

It won't b the 1st time, or the last, that our garbage is another club's treasure.

To be fair though, in the not too distant past, we have benefitted from taking our cousin's trash, (Pirlo and Seedorf) and turning them into diamonds.

Pity that we haven't been able to do that recently...however our luck is bound to change again for the better...hopefully sooner rather than later...as we will need all the luck we can get this coming season.

pique was regarded as a large talent from man utd, but where would he play.... surely not over vidic and ferdinand. He wanted to move back to barca (he's from there youth system like fabregas moved to england at 15 or 16). Man U respected his wishes....Fergie also had johnny evans who was above pique on there depth chart... same age, and probably a better fit. But pique did play in 07-08 for man u, a little in league, mostly in cups...

Gabriel489

Pique is by no means trash from ManU. Actually if then Brown was a bit more solid and Rio was less reckless. ManU would have probably waited for Evans and Pique to mature for another year or two instead of signing Vidic.

I'd take Cissokho over Drenthe anyday. Like most in here I have seen only a few matches of Cissokho, but what I saw was very promising - and that I cannot say about Drenthe, when he has played at LB. And there's nothing strange about that, as the man simply isn't a defender, and I don't think even training with Zambrotta and Nesta could change that.

According to milannews so far it seems Oddo has rejected a couple of offers from England and Olympiakos. The best hope we have is him going to Lazio for De Silvestri and probably cash.

It's been very quiet this week on the transfer front besides Roma coming. Drenthe is the biggest rumour but the player says he wants to stay in Madrid and whilst adding more going forward, is defensively very suspect.

I havent seen any friendly of my team yet,the US Tour was way to late on tv,i was on holiday when the Audi Cup took place and the match against Benfica well....i had to work.

Just got back from work and FINALLY i can see how Milan is doing against our rivals,Inter Merda and Juve...Merda.

Drenthe has now said for the second time that he doesnt want to leave Madrid,i can understand him, because the new coach is playing him allot in friendlies and he is giving more trust,he will probably make way more minutes then last season so its understandable.

I hope Oddo gets the **** out of Milan ASAP,how many hints does a player needs before they understand they are not needed,he isnt even a decent backup,he should leave,Oddo leave ASAP PLEASE!!!

If Oddo only wants Lazio, and we will only sign a FB if Oddo leaves, then there is bad news because then we will end up with Oddo, because Lazio already have rejected taking back Oddo for De Silvestri, and they only want cash.

I really hope we can get rid of him, because he really isnt needed,i mean REALLY.

I would rather have us releasing Oddo and signing nobody, then just ending up with the guy.

Zambro,Albertazzi,Antonini,Pasini,Janku.

I would rather give our youth(Albertazzi and Pasini who are major talents)a chance then seeing old Oddo going into the field.

We have 28 players in our team right now.....IF Oddo leaves and we get another FB,we still have 28 players, its way too much,we should loan out Storari again to another Serie A club, selling Dida isnt going to work because of his salary,we also shouldnt have renewed Favagols contract despite the fact that i think he is very solid, and we also should loan out Viudez and Cardacio, then we would have 24 players wich is enough, anyway Viudez,Cardacio have to go on loan, our squad IMO is waaaay to big.

And seriously, Mattioni only played like 15 minutes of official football for us, at the very end of last season, out of position I might add (right midfield). Can anyone really say he's not good enough to make the grade under those circumstances?

He was hardly ever called up at all, so what gives everyone the idea that he's "that bad"?
It could have been a management thing, it could have been Carlo playing favorites, or for all we know Berlu demanded a minimum number of italians on every match or something. I say, we never gave him much of a chance.

thats HARDLY out of position....he was a right wingback/winger. He couldnt defend so playing right midfield made more sense. serginho did it....The thing that got me was even in attack he didnt look impressive (and i'm basing this off a friendly i saw him play).

You have to realize he is 21 and not even capped for u21 national team. Players like rafinha and patric to him. Apparently he really only had about 1-2 months of form with gremio then immediately tried to leave for europe. I'm sure he has some skill but he's far from ready

i don't but the 'management thing' Carlo made it clear, he makes the decisions. It got him let go to a degree, deciding not to play ronaldinho. Carlo isnt an idiot....he was dying for a fb, and prefered to play flamini out of position to this kid.

But at the end of the day there is nothing any of us can do , at the beginning of the mercato I was hoping that at least 30 - 40 million would be spent.

But in reality we have only spent 6.5 million on Huntelaar with the rest to be paid next season.

Onyewu is really nothing and I hope that there is an end of mercato blitz where we get a midfielder and a LB.

But if it dosn't happen Il treat the season as every other with passion and excitement.

I am pi$$ed with management but evem though I thought I wouldn't be as passionate as before I am though still getting that feeling of a kid a x-mas when im getting ready to watch my boys play.

This begs the question though, why would Barca be interested in him now, then? One summer is hardly enough time to develop your football, given most players are on holidays and all that. What do they see in him that we did not?

Could it be that despite Milan being able to spot talented players, we don't actually have the means or confidence to develop them from a certain age (say early 20-ish) into their full potential, whilst teams like Barca do? Pique would be my prime example here, he was considered surplus to Man Utd, and yet won it all at Barca, and didn't play too badly there either.

On a side note, Juve take game one v. Inter

Very true.

Sorry guys, but i have to say,

Milan didnt give me any hope during the friendly games,as it looked Milan lost so much offensive power after Kaka's sale and replacing Kaka with Ronaldinho who is almost finished,in my opinion Ronaldinho was better than this last season.he was trying to dribble,he was trying to do something but This Ronaldinho is hopeless.he even doesnt try,he cant keep the ball undeer his feet, his contribution to us is very little.

Abate is a good player but playing him at RCM wont add anything to us,cuz he is a runner.

It seems Abate will be the only one trusted with any sort of first-team action this year.

I really hope that Leonardo and Galliani being coy about transfers wasn't because of Roma.

But at the same time, I really wonder if transfers is going to change things. Why do I say that? Have you watched Pato play? I mean, he's really only done something meaningful once this pre-season, against Benfica. I'm scared Pato will play poorly this season.

M84, which site had historical formations listed for teams?

---

Yes, current Milan certainly can't compete even in our league, much less in CL. However, I think we can get back to being competitive with a few transfers.

We have Pato and Hunt up top, two great players. However, it is a waste if we cannot feed them good passes in the last third. Dinho can't cut it for an entire season. He is very good when playing up top with his back to the goal, ready to make that killer pass into the box. But now he is dropping back to get the ball from midfield, and losing the ball before he can make a move.

Because of this, I think we should put a higher priority on G Rossi. Otherwise, Pato/Hunt will be wasted and soon get very frustrated. Pato may want to leave at the end of next season if this continues.

In midfield we cannot play with two DMs. There is no creativity, and no connection to attack. This is why Dinho constantly drops back to get the ball and makes himself vulnerable. Also, Pato gives us the ability to play the long ball. As you saw today, without Pirlo, this option is not available.

Also, full backs are not providing any width. Zammy was good vs. the Swiss, but it was the Swiss. Antonini is terrible, Jank is not much of an improvement.

De Silvestri would be a good addition here. He's certainly not WC now, but has great potential at least.

So, to summarize:
- Buy Rossi, sell R80 (we could probably do this with 0 investment)
- Swap De Silvestri for Oddo (probably cost us 7-8M)
- Buy a creative box to box midfielder (15M)
- If we cannot figure out a way to play Pirlo with another MF + DM, then we need to sell Pirlo, move the DM to the middle, and get yet another MF for the side. (even trade)

Roughly 23M and the starting XI of that team will be formidable. Backups are still worrisome, but it's definitely a good starting point.

I'll just tell you one thing. Having Pirlo or Dinho on the team greatly limits the tactics we can use. Having both in at the same time significantly limits us. I'm not judging Leo's abilities for better or worse, but I admit his hands are almost tied at this point.

Honestly, I think our issues are beyond transfers.

It is straight-up tactics. We are playing poorly in pre-season because of tactics.

I mean, Pato playing poorly in the begining of pre-season was understandable, even expected. He had a honeymoon, he hadn't played for a while, blah blah blah.

Today, Pato was useless. Sure, he had some nice turns, like he should, but, since he was dropping back to be the "seconda punta" he thinks he is, he constantly lost the ball once he got past the first two or three defenders.

Our midfield was destructive, but, aided little in the attack, except for Abate's surging runs, which usually were clogged up with Oddo's odd positioning and terrible assistance.

The only place I really think we need transfers is our fullbacks.

Otherwise, we simply have not played the right players in the right positions, or even at the right time.

The only time we've done so was against Chelsea, and we played brilliant. I'm sorry to say, but I think Leonardo's tactics are the bigger problem, our transfers are really the secondary issue.

this is terrible... I think what we really need is ALOTTTT Of improvement in the midfield.. id take a couple good midfielders at this point who can give good balls and score some goals rather then strengthning our defence. if we can do both GREAT but if not id take the midfield over defence, ESPECIALY replacing r80..

So now we have 2 losses to Inter in pre-season, and one loss to Juve and probably another one coming soon, and our management are still optimistic about next season? Can't they see that this team is a damn disgrace and a shame to Milan's history? Even a baby would be able to figure out that this team is in major need of ALOT of reinforcements. Come the fk on Berlusconi, open your damn wallet or get the fk out. The biggest problem for me is that he knows a problem exists but he choses to ignore it and hope everything turns out good. That's my point. When you have a midfield that can't link up with attack, attackers will drop back to get the ball. That's why we need to reinforce midfield.

what i saw was a mess..
the team was cut in 2 in both "games"..
abate is not the right man at any chance..this preseason shows me how important are pirlo and seedorf for this team,if they are motivated we can be a whole different team..

plus we cannot rely on dinho, isnt it clear already???..
we need a lb obviously(as antonini is not stable on his performances)
a gk(even abbiati is a? for me),btw storari is beter than roma for me..
and i wonder how none of you is mentioning the lack of a cb too(onyewu, favalli, bonera, kaladze=crap)!!

all my "pessimistic","b1tching",booming and glooming" posts all this summer are coming true one by one..

i wish i was more optimistic, and i will be if things change, but for now i think that we are not even close to compete for titles..and i am just being realistic..

I think it's too late for anything to be done now. The transfer and coaching philosophy was set probably even before Carlo left. Even if Berlu were to have a change of heart now, who could we get with 2 weeks to go til the end of the transfer market. Secondly, tactics-wise, if we had a change of heart and decided to install an experienced coach, what's the point in doing it now?

I'm resigned to the fact that this season will be a test of the Berlusconi/Galliani "balance the books" and "focus on youngsters" and "Leonardo has great potential" philosophy. Of course, I hope it succeeds and we can prove something to the football world, but if it flops, then the year goes to waste and we do the real re-building work next year.

Thiago Silva Excited About Milan's Prospects For The Season
The former Fluminense defender is upbeat about the Rossoneri's chances in the coming months after a disappointing pre-season...

Thiago Silva joined Milan from Fluminense last January in a €10 million deal, but was unable to play for the first-team due to the limit on non-EU players. However, he is now ready and raring to go for Leonardo's side after a bright pre-season for him personally in which he scored twice.

"To arrive in a great club like Milan was my dream," Thiago Silva told Il Corriere dello Sport.

"I'm happy because I've found an excellent atmosphere here; I'm training with lots of champions and I have the chance to learn a lot.

"[Scoring goals from defence] happened there too, but I have had more opportunities here than I had in three years at Fluminense. I have the advantage that Leonardo always wants me in the opposition penalty area when we have a set-piece."

The 24-year-old went on to praise Ronaldinho's commitment, as the former World Player of the Year attempts to rediscover his form of 2005/06.

"He is working hard. It has been some time since I saw him concentrate so hard. He is very attentive to what he does on the pitch, but also to what he does off it. Like me, he has a tendency to fatten a bit, so we must always be on a diet."While the Rossoneri consider moves for Gareth Bale and Royston Drenthe, Thiago Silva went on to make his own suggestion for Milan's search for a left-back.

"Junior Cesar. He's a friend of mine, we played together at Fluminense - now he has gone to Sao Paolo. He would do well in Europe," he concluded.

I know you want to help a friend. Thiago...but, cīmon!?!?!:5milan:

This begs the question though, why would Barca be interested in him now, then? One summer is hardly enough time to develop your football, given most players are on holidays and all that. What do they see in him that we did not?

Could it be that despite Milan being able to spot talented players, we don't actually have the means or confidence to develop them from a certain age (say early 20-ish) into their full potential, whilst teams like Barca do? Pique would be my prime example here, he was considered surplus to Man Utd, and yet won it all at Barca, and didn't play too badly there either.

On a side note, Juve take game one v. Inter

So you trust Barca's scouts 100%? Not all players who were targeted by big clubs are good.

If he does, I wonder how many will be b1tching that Milan should have taken Chelsea's 45 million pounds and used it to buy Rossi and a few other players?

Surely a lot of them, who are only fans when we're winning, would do that.:ilol:

I think we fans need to accept the fact that this season is going to be a disaster. The fact of matter is, as somebody previously mentioned, the plans were put in place before Ancelotti and Kaka even left the team. Did they know that their plan would lead to a lot of losses? Sure they have. With their experiences, they must have known that a team low on talent can't actually win trophies, but they decided to focus on bigger and more important things, the books. So there it is, we have a lackluster transfer season again; put in place an inexperienced coach to be a possible scapegoat; and we played mind games with the fans again the whole summer long. All of this happened by design because this is exactly how the management wanted everything to play out. They didn't want to win trophies because they felt like their wallet was more important than glory. We fans might not like that philosophy, but there it is. At this point, even if we sign 10 great players in two weeks, we still wouldn't be able to get the title because the first half of the season will be used only on gelling all the new players.

Now maybe this team will do well this season. Of course, that depends on your definition of the word "well". I certainly wish so too, for the only reason that I don't want to know what this team will look like this time next year if we fail to qualify for CL again. All wishes aside, however, we all have to face the fact that this team simply isn't good enough to challenge for anything at all. Qualifying for CL could very well be the only attainable target for next season. I for one don't like it, but I have to live with it. I will just cope with this thing my way by spending more time on other things rather than watching and reading about milan.

If you ve noticed not only are we not scoring goals but we ve also been conceding too many lately. Which means we are in desperate times and i believe we cannot do without a good full back just as much as we would need a good midfielder. I would seriously prefer Silvestri coming in. He s a really talented lad. As far as the midfield issue goes, R 80 is not doing what we hoped he would do. Leonardo needs more time. But what we desperately need are a few new faces. If Berlusconi thinks otherwise, then let GOD save us, coz from what i see we would be aiming for the qualification spot for next years CL.

if ronnie is not going to step up, what about Van Der Vaart?

the problem ain't about players stepping up and be on form, honestly things are getting worse, milan lost their identity before we were boring, predictable and way too dependant on individual achievements but at least we had ball possession, nowadays we still the same but we are being dispossessed in every chance we are trying to create. i have a huge respect for Leonardo but this is not his job, milan needed a better coach. i almost watched all the pre-season and nothing really looks promising i am not saying Leo is not a good coach but with the current squad we have,

i really can't figure out anything i always supported the management and backed their decisions but to downgrade your team is something different, i would really like milan to be sold its no longer acceptable, i mean for godsake what will berlusconi say when juve hammer us. its more than stressful to watch milan, and more than disgusting to listen to galliani and berlusconi, i really hand it to them, if you wanna hate football support milan.

we need at least 6 new players, not the youngsters type galliani prefers. if favalli is a direct replacement for you starting cb, what more can you expect?

we need two full backs and a cb. box to box midfielder and an attacking midfielder . maybe with those reinforcements we might be able to win locally and and maybe semi final champions league

Well the article does claim that we'll sell Pirlo aswell, so in that case it would be 'only' be 15'ish M euro.

And don't be fooled by what Galliani says, the economy at Milan is among the best in the world for football clubs, it's just that they're not willing to take loans to invest in players like everyone else. Besides Berlusconi does have that kind of money floating around.

Anyways, would be pretty damn awesome if we signed Fabregas, but regardless, even if we don't sign him perhaps we'll see another big signing on Monday, it wouldn't be to unlikely and it would be typical Berlusconi.

I didn't watch Trofeo Tim, but I'm officially worried now. I really was optimistic, OK, pre-season doesn't have to mean anything, but we simply lost ALL matches! I came with some conclusions:

- Leonardo is there just to pick up the dust;

- Ronaldinho needs to play as good as last season, but CONSISTENTLY. As I cannot imagine this happening, we truly need an attacking midfielder. Van Der Vaart could jump in, not because he's something special (which he ain't), but because he'll come cheap and for that amount of money (I was thinking about ~10 mil. of euros or less) you can't get a decent player;

- Seedorf is good but he isn't consistent and there are question marks over his motivation too, so we need a backup, Hernanes would be good;

- We didn't have a good side back on a log term since Kaladze got injured and suddenly lost his qualities (2003.). I lost my faith in Antonini now, he simply isn't good enough;

- And the keeper. Since G & B think that team can succeed without a world-class keeper, because we didn't have a world-class keeper since Berlusconi took the club, there no point discussion it. I'll just say that Roma is awful.

And, roughly, that's it. If we want to fight for Scudetto, we have to find Ronaldinho's replacement at least. Because, truth to be told, Inter and Juventus are nothing special either.

If we want to fight for champions league, this year and the years to come, we have to spend roughly 60 million of euros on AM, LF and CM.

And, yet, Leonardo has to prove himself as a good choice and Huntelaar have to prove he's not another Gilardino. :uhm:

Yesterday's display was pathetic. However, it has a lot to do with Leonardo. We are not even playing at a mediocre level. While it is true that pre-season should not be used to judge everything, it cannot be completely ignored. We have been woeful in pre-season. Even if the signings come in now, Leonardo is so wet behind the ears that he would need at least half a season to work out a winning formula.

Also, Serie A has gotten far more competitive this year as well. The likes of Napoli and Genoa have strengthened, while Juve were impressive yesterday--and they were without Diego! We could realistically finish in 6th place.

Our transfer season has been a D- so far. Our pre-season has been an F.

It is looking extremely grim.

in my opinion abbiati is in the top 10 of goalies in world football, also i think the top 5 are in no particular order

buffon 19/20
cesar 18/20
casillas 18/20
reina 17/20
cech 15/20

although the top 4 are quite a bit ahead of cech

the only problem with abbiati is the fact that he his injured at the moment he his good enough to keep no1 status at milan. I can't see the benefit of spending millions on buffon julio cesar or frey we might as well plan for the future and buy a player like diego lopez or marchetti or amelia, admittedly inter success has been down to a talented goal keeper and ibra but the affect has been that toldo is awful.

i can easily find a lot more than 10 better than abbiati, but the thing is that he is not just worse than buffon or cesar(juve, inter),he is miles behind them..

i have a feeling that fabrgas is not that unrealistic, there are so many rumors today about him..i wish we got him and not sell pirlo..

we could then use rino-flamini-fabregas and one ofpirlo-seedorf-dinho in the medfield, and with a lb(are there any decent lbs left anymore btw?) we could have a gr8 11..still we would need a center back and a golie for me,but i d be happy with those too(fabregas+lb) without any departures..

we have 35mil to spend..actually we have a lot more, but i dont want t start with that now..

Personally I don't see any truth in this. Wenger has already said that he won't sell Fabregas to Barca just before the season starts, so I don't see him selling Fabregas to Milan after the season has started.

As for Pirlo, it has already been said that he's been taken off the market, not that he can't go back on the market, but the way he spoke a week or so ago about finishing his career at Milan... I just don't see him going.

First. I love fabregas and if it happened I'd jump for joy but the truth is this won't make us a better team cause fabregas is just a younger version of pirlo. What this team is missing is players who are able to beat there man with the dribble.
from midfield or defense. We have passers lots of fine passers, pirlo, seedorf, ronnie. But really only kaka could beat his man. Now we have abate who can somewhat but his technique is also limited and he's a work in progress

Management seems to thnk well see a return to ronnie of old but despite all his free kicks, vision and passes he just doesn't have the burst of pace to beat a man anymore.

Now compare this to say Milan best attacking team, we had cafu and serginho on flanks. Seedorf back then could beat his man thru the middle and kaka. All these options plus sheva made it easy for pirlo to sit deep and just pass. Now we just have a team of pirlos who can pass... But pass to who??

Compared to barca and man utd winners of last 2 ucls or he'll even inter were severly lacking. Those teams had 4 or 5 players capable of making an effective run on or off ball... We literally only have abate and he's not really started quality anymre. That's y players like fab or hernanes won't necessarily enhance us as much especially if we don't get bale or a van der vaart

Btw samaldinho I think you are too harsh on pato. I do agree 1 day hell be a 1st striker but for now he's best suited as a second. Remember he was in great form when he played with pippo. He picked up 6 assists, not bad for a 19 year old with developing game....

I think of course he ideal partner would have been ibrahimovic. Someone who can switch between 1st and second with him but thaw just a dream

Finally dru said this and I think there's some truth. He gets the ronaldo comparison but Isnt sheva more accurate?? He likes to run out wide at defenders. He's still only 19 too... Despitebeing a prodigy he does need time to grow, and who knows what hell be at 23 or 25?!?!

Fabregas is not coming. He's playing against Everton and just supplied a sweet pass to Denilson for a goal :P

I gotta agree with M84. We don't seem to have to players that can blow past opponents anymore, Pato may have the ability to, but he needs an extra yard of space to control, which is quite hard to get in Serie A. Ronnie has the technique, but does not have the speed to do it anymore. The only one I've seen that has been able to outpace opponents has been Abate, and once the opponents realize this, you can be sure that he'll be marked closely. We need more options up front, and players that can actually get past markers, or at least have the pace to.

sounds like milano84 and ryo are hoping milan will get lavezzi or mendez you guys have a point about the lack of fast nibble players at milan but i am more worried about the fullback players and a young talented goalkeeper. Milan aren't likely to be very successful next year so lets see what ronaldinho can do than ask for a new striker, after a year of squabbling between lavezzi and donadoni we might get him on a free transfer you never know.

I think they were referring to central midfielders who can carry the ball and help create something up front. Someone in the mold of Iniesta would be perfect. Aquilani was close but already left for Liverpool. I love Cesc too but he isn't exactly what we need.

A quality wingback and a cm who can make a move thru middle is what we need. Fast energetic players. I can keep adding to the list but that's a basic. At some point u need players who work for the team... We don't need to keep adding virtuosos from dead ball situations who sit and pass... Who r they passing too???

It's literally the opposite problem of inter who has all workers and lack the real pace setter passing to orchestrate

ouch in that case we just sold two fast nibble players who would go threw the middle or play behind the strikers, let face it is not likely that we will find and buy anyone similar to kaka and we will never get a deal for a player like gourcuff again. we have to change our style of play personally i prefer more pace upfront and a strong play maker able to create several assists also we do need to get another full back to add a extra impotence to the attack.

Exactly. We don't need a forward (though a backup for pato would be nice). More like players who do this from deep... Fullbacks and midfielders. Players like serginho and a young seedorf. Players like maicon, dani alves, evra. Iniesta, lampard (who may not be as graceful but equally as effecive).

Aquilani is a great name. I wanted him, if he can stay healthy he's 100% ideal! But realisically sneijder or van der vaart (who r on the market) and bale (who may be too young but he will be absolute class) or de silvestri

that we may survive from

I think that's fair. Beckham's done well at Milan in his time here, but he's simply a stop gap solution rather than a proper well planned purchase.

if ronnie is not going to step up, what about Van Der Vaart?

I don't think VDV is good enough to take Dinho's place personally. There's been a lot of mention of dutch players lately and if I was to choose one right now then it'd be Van Persie for sure. He plays wide right and likes to cut in and having just turned 26 has a decent number of years to make a significant mark at Milan. He's not a goalscorer but scores a fair amount and provides plenty of assists. For me, he'd fit into our system much better than Dinho and we could effectively play the desired 4-3-3. The side could look something like this...

--------------Abbiati----------------
Zambro---Nesta----Thiago-----New FB
--------Rino------------Flamini-------
---------------Pirlo------------------
--Van Persie-------------------------
--------------------------Pato-------
---------------Hunter----------------

We'd have a much better balanced shape than we currently do and could genuinely make use of the wide areas. Pato whilst starting on the left would be desirable in a position similar to Sheva and Henry in the past where he cuts in to play as a striker, thus making use of his ability yet coming close to goal and supporting Huntelaar. With Flamini allowed to push forward, as well as the fullback coming forward, we'd still have the left side well used when attacking.

I know it's really nothing more than a dream to have him, but hey, people are hoping for Cesc after some rather dubious sounding rumours ;)

What Im wondering now is are we an attractive team for players to think about coming to us ?

The history is there the CL football is there but are we a major player ATM I won't know until the season starts and we play competitive games.

In saying that if the players can't get up for games against Juve and Merda then they have no business at the club.

I think leo wants to play a fast game with wingers and fullbacks bombing on. But we just do not have the players for that to work.

There is real quality in this squad on paper but that means nothing if they don't deliver.

Im waiting for the season to kickoff to see what we have got I honestly hope the lads get the bit between there teeth. Id personly kill to play a game for Milan do these guys feel the same I hope so.

fabregas would be great for the system leonardo is running, we dont need no undersized midfielders this is Serie A, where it's very rare to see a player like giovinco even simone pepe destroy the wings in this league it's very rare to see someone run the wings and pass up 3 players with speed dribble and finish for a goal, fabregas is strong long passes play defence and can push up sounds like Serie A dont it?, honestly pirlo has not scored any goals or done anything this pre season last year he would have 1 good game every 10 games the reason we're not scoring is we're playing with 3 DM's flamini pirlo gattuso it should be 2 defensive midfielders and 1 attacking midfielder hell i'd even start abate or seedorf with flamini and gattuso to get some sort of help to ronaldinho it's eazy to score on a team that you know has problems scoring so therefore you push up more consistently and open the game up more, because no fear of the other club id start more attacking midfielders i dont think the back 4 is as bad as everyone thinks it's the midfield we cant play so open watchout i hate to say it mabey silvio got it wrong with leonardo

Wenger knows no one will bid a "Ronaldo size bid" for Fabregas, and I highly doubt he would sell him after Toure and Adebayor left the club.

fabregas reports haven't been a total waste of journalist efforts i have been able to annoy the hell out of my friends who support arsenal for the entire day lol. seriously there really is a very small chance of milan buying anyone that costs over 30 million euros unless berlusconi is willing to spend vast sums of money on the team. l still get why everyone would love fabregas to come to milan for is incredibly expensive and isn't the type of player that would bring a vast amount of added value to milan, so what if beckham and pirlo are old they both can pass the further and more accurately than cesc these are the attributes we would be looking for in a new cmf play maker. if we have 35-40 million to spend on a new player than i would implore milan to buy hernanes criscito/ Emanuelson maybe try and get either giovinco or foggia on loan.

Fabregas played today. If we had "bought" him, I doubt he would have played.

Supposedly there are demonstrations planned for the Trofeo Berlusconi. This certainly will put added pressure on Berlusca to bring in transfers. I don't know if it will actually work though, as the guy is quite good at resisting pressure.

Fabregas would certainly be a great purchase for the long term, as he is 22 and versatile in midfield. He currently isn't an overwhelming improvement over Pirlo, but Pirlo's prime days are counting down and Cesc does have more pace. So definitely a good replacement.

Of course, let's hope at least we get some transfer announced on Monday.

My expectations for next season, based on the completely abject performance of the team, Leonardo's selections and player placement, are getting lower and lower.

Hopefully, we won't actually get relegated.

No single transfer (or even group of transfers into/out of Milan will solve anything in time to make a difference to the 1st half of the season's results IMO.

The problem (as I have stated before) for me, is that Leo is waaay too inexperienced to lead a side like Milan in a high pressure season, when a club icon has been sold, and his replacement still prefers a party to playing football.

The Fabregas rumor is str8 BS...there is nothing to it, and those "journalists" should lose their jobs....its so ridiculous....

As for the protests planned for the Trofeo Berlusconi.....no one should show up at all, or if they do, just protest outside the stadium....let onlyJuve fans in...the empty seats for me would speak volumes more than a few banners, which tv would prob get footage of anyway even if they were only outside the stadium..

I am sickened and disgusted by the way we have handled this summer, and the fans should all feel the same way, and by not attending matches, as a concerted coordinated protest, it would send a clear message.

As a result of my disgust with Milan, I haven't even watched much football today, didn't even feel up to watchin Arsenal, as I usually do.

although i'll like to have G.Rossi, i'll pick Pasquale Foggia cuz he's much cheaper...and then buy more players...now what milan has in terms of the numbers of people is quantity not quality...we lack much quality especially in midfield and defense...we don't just need players we need players that can make the difference...seedorf, favalli, antonini, oddo..these players and more don't make a difference in our team

If thats the case, then shouldn't we aim at signing high quality players like Rossi rather than more squad players who are nothing more than bench warmers like Foggia? I agree with your point though, because we need to invest wisely, which means signing players who are high quality rather than bringing in a boat load of cheap has beens.

As much as I like Leo (and I do) and want him to be a huge success his comments of it will be fine don't give me much confidence we have lost 8 games in a row pre season or not I cannot remember the last time this happened.

Is it the team are not playing well not trying very hard or is Leo not up to scratch . The best thing to do would be for the fans to not enter the stadium on Monday and silently protest.

But Berlu probably expects this kind of thing so maybe will have an excuse to not show up , he seems like the kind of guy who would think if I can 't see it its not happening.

I just dont think infact I know that selling Kaka , Gourcuff , losing Sheva , Emerson , Senderos , Kalac and MALDINI + Carlo , to be replaced with Onyewu ? Roma (good move) and paying for half of Huntelaar which is 6.5 million that is no investment.

And the thing that annoys most of us fans is we do not know what is going on. If we had got a genuine answer like there is honestly no money to be invested only 5 - 10 million.

But instead we get silence and told our team is the best in the world WTF WTF WTF , Are you serious Silvio that is the kind of stuff that has us really annoyed.

If we had got the we have no money story and silence no stupid comments it might of been understandable. And then when Hunter came Berlu had the cheek to say no I demand we challenge and are successful.

This post has turned into a Berlu bashing session AGAIN :dielaugh:...but Im just getting worried for the season because its the 16th of August and we are in no shape for the start of the season and the Champions League.

As silly as that rumor may be, I'm still hoping for it. Well, that's the only thing a fan can do for his team. Unless I suddenly have some 1000M. Surely I'll spend 70M of it for my beloved club to sign Fabregas. :p017:

I have a feeling that Van der Vaart will end up at Inter. I hope I'm wrong though, he'll be a great addition to our squad.

And don't underestimate Berlusconi, I wouldn't bulls-hit the Fabregas rumor yet. We all know that in football (and life generally) everything is possible. Even Kaka the saint left us to Madrid, plus when Berlu falls in love with a player he gives himself a nice treat and buys him. Maybe I'm being over optimistic but we've been heavily linked with Fab for some time and it might come true, it's so like Berlusconi.

Anyway if we don't get Fabregas then I hope we get Van der Vaart and unleash the dutch duet! And still we're going to have a shi.t season...

Bring on all the pessimistic people.

Bring them on? Damn. I thought they'd been here all summer! :D

Well, I hate to remain positive because I know how it irks all you worry warts who are convinced that the sky is falling, but preseason is just preseason. If Milan is facing relegation based on preseason results, then so is Liverpool. They were bloody awful against Espanyol and Atletico Madrid.

Here's the way I see it. Milan was good enough last year to finish level on points with Juve in a tie for second place. Kaka was sold, which of course was a big blow. Maldini retired, but my hero is 41 years old. Do you really want a 41-year-old whose body is breaking down out there again? I don't, no matter how much I cried after his final game. Aside from those two, all the key players from last year are back except for Beckham, who it seems will likely once again join the club in January as he did last year. Sheva and Senderos, who were only here on loan anyway, were virtually irrelevant.

On the positive side, Milan has added a fantastic goalscoring striker in Huntelaar (someone they could have used last year) and a talented young CB in Thiago Silva, as well as Onyewu as a backup. They've also added Abate, who can give the team pace and appears to be someone who can develop into an important player. An experienced backup goalkeeper has been brought in after Kalac was so awful in the preseason. Apparently the club is still looking to bring in a much-needed fullback.

Also on the positive side, Nesta, Gattuso and Borriello seem to be healthy after basically missing all of last season with injuries. Abbiati, who was often brilliant last year, has recovered well, is training and targeting a mid-September return. Nesta is still one of the best center backs in the world when he's healthy. Honestly, I don't see how anyone can doubt that Milan will be better off with the pairing of Nesta and Silva than last year when Maldini and Favalli were almost a combined 80 years old and, frankly, had an awful time keeping up with speedy forwards. Gattuso has been the heart and soul of Milan for years. He's the club's inspirational leader and his aggressive play should again win a ton of balls in midfield.

The big thing right now is getting used to a new coach and a new system. That's what preseason is for. Maybe Milan won't be in full gear to start the season, but this is a talented and experienced squad and I can't imagine that things won't start to click before too long. It's true that Leonardo is not an experienced coach. I myself expressed the sentiment when Leonardo was first rumored to be in line to replace Carlo that I would prefer a more experienced coach. But Leonardo is the coach we have. We need to give him time to grow and to show us what he can do. I think Guardiola and Zola have proven that you don't have to have a ton of experience to do the job. So we need to give Leonardo a chance.

It's true that Inter and Juve have added some players (although Inter also lost their best player). Maybe Milan can compete with them for the Scudetto. Maybe not. But the idea that Milan has suddenly become worse than Fiorentina, Genoa, Napoli, etc., etc., etc., is preposterous. I see no reason to believe that Milan can't finish in the top 3 again this year and if they do that will be enough for now.

None of us can really say how things will go until Milan gets a number of regular season games under their belts. So rather than relegate the team based on preseason, let's wait awhile and see how things are going around the first of October at least before we start jumping off bridges. :kiss2:

Yes, of course, Liverpool's season is as good as over and they're out of Europe next year for sure because they had a horrible preseason and are now trailing Spurs 1-0 at halftime at White Hart Lane (where, coincidentally, Liverpool lost not just once, but twice last year). :D

If we're realistic, we need a lot more than even what you mentioned. We need a CB, two fullbacks (minimum of 1 assuming Zambro is still ok), a two way midfielder, a creative midfielder/attacker and a powerful striker as I really don't have great faith in Borri. That's if we're sticking with what we're playing atm. If we're looking to go 4-3-3 then that midfielder/attacker would be naturally wide, which is why I mentioned Van Persie being ideal in my last post.

I know we wont get all of that.

Im not sure we need all of it either.

Our 4 strikers are great, it doesnt really get better than Boriello as a 4th choice striker. Pippo is Pippo, Pato is Pato and we need to trust in Huntelaar.

Zambro is still ok, so we only need one fullback. A centre back would be nice.

Midfield - Who even knows anymore? If Ronnie plays well then the midfield is adequate, if not then we could do with a playmaker. Otherwise, the blend we have of battlers, creative players and Abate to add pace is ok I suppose.

Beggars cant be choosers. If we do get any more money spent this summer, then Id be devastated if it were spent on a player like Van Persie where we are covered already. Im desperate for the defence to be reinforced.

Seeing as we were talking about mobile CM's who work for the team, how is Luca Modric doing at Tottenham? Does it look like he might want a move away from England any time soon?

Modrić is good enough for Milan. Today he was arguably man of the match against Liverpool. I would rather have him than Pirlo... He maybe doesn't have Pirlo's technique but he is a complete midfielder. He is quick, defensively good, he never stops running, very good passing, his shot is getting better. But unfortunately he is too expensive for Milan.

Ćorluka is also very good. Not slow (although when you look him running he looks a bit slow), brilliant technique for defender, plays right back, also he can be centre back... He is much, much better than any Milan full back, except Zambrotta of course.

But with many croatian players there is problem of price.. Srna would cost much more than he is worth just because he is in Shakhtar and Ahmetov doesn't want to sell him for little money. Ćorluka should be cheaper.

I watched this guys many times (in Croatian league, Croatian national team, and in Man City and then Tottenham...) so I know them...

Yes i also agree that we need more players than 2 backs, the team is like an old car with many problems.
If Nesta is ok with Tiago playing we can have a nice DC duo, in midfield with Pirlo,Gattuso,Abate,Ambro,Janku,R80, and Seedorf i think we have a lot of power to fill the midfield area, not great but just good. In attack well with Pato,Hunter,Pippo and Borrielo i think we are also not great but OK.

In fullbacks position, i can tell you that (my opinion) Zambro is not good for Milan, he is not the Zambro of the past, he makes many wrong passes, not the old good crosses,he makes foolish sprints loosing a lot of energy for nothing, plus he is old.
In LB position we are dead, we have nothing there, the team is very weak over there.
My opinion if we want many changes, the first two players must be 1 Lb and 1 RB.

I see what you are saying...........but in my opinion (everyone has their idea of football and I'm not saying yours is wront), having dribblers is hardly the way to break down teams that play tight defense. The way to do that is through fast passage of play in the middle. Fast pace movement of the ball which will make that defense shift around and lose it's shape....therefore leaving holes and spaces in their half. This is where we have failed, even though like you said we have a team that not untill too long ago was one of the best passing teams in Europe. But now they've slowed down. The movement of the ball is way tooooo slow. When you don't move the ball fast and there is no dynamics, the defense doesn't lose it's shape and it's very very tough to break it through. (This is where a tough/tall/strong forward would help) Anyhow......if you don't move the ball fast it doesn't matter what kind of dribblers you have on your side.....they can't take on 2-3 players at a time. You need to move the ball around and make spaces so that your dribblers are on 1-on-1 situations. We simply don't do that. That's where I think is our biggest problem at the moment. NO DYNAMICS....NO PACE in the ball movement.

That's why I think even if we buy a mid that can take on players........as long as we don't play faster pace, that player will be more or less useless. Having said that.....I would love to see an aggresive wingback brought in the remaining couple of weeks. We desperately need some aggression going forward from our backs. Someone that will constantly be willing to take on players, get involved in the build up, shoot, cross...etc.

i think you are 100% right.... to play ATTACKING footbll you need a team of technically sound players capable of intelligent quick movements and th ability to get past defenders. Now as i see it we have players like pirlo who know how to set the pace and distribute, but we dont have anyone who can actually make the run or take on a defender. There is only 1 ball, we dont need everyone to be a pace setter... we need players who can make a run with AND without the ball....

in the cup, how many times did ronnie pass it wide to terrible fullbacks. Now imagine if he made those passes to say a dani alves (who granted is possibly best attacking rb) all of a sudden defenders have to stay wider to defend, opens up space etc etc etc. IMO half the reason messi and xavi were so great this year was dani alves. teams feared his runs and when u have both messi, dani alves running at u on right w/ xavi thru middle... i mean it becomes a case of pick ur poison, you cant stop them all.

the part i bolded is completel true too. But at a certain point we need players who can take on defenders w/ the ball too. I mean theres just so much wrong with this squad, and our management seems content giving opportunities to kids like di gennaro who havent shown anything IMO.

Fret
16-08-2009, 14:46
Yes M84, the reason why it's so hard to play defense against Barca is because on their every midfielder and attacker you have to put 2 men all the time and that's impossible and that's why they all have plenty of room to dribble around the field, given the fact that they play fast

Milan Coach Leonardo: We Must Believe That We Can Win Again
The Rossoneri coach hopes to turn the corner...

Milan coach Leonardo believes that his team just needs to change their attitude to get back on the winning track after a disastrous pre-season.

The Rossoneri have failed to impress during the past friendly games and have collected a number of draws and defeats.

However, Leonardo is clearly positive and looking forward to proving that what we saw in the past weeks is not the real Milan.

“Realistically what must change in this team is the attitude,” declared the Milan mentor to Milan Channel.

“The basis is formed by champions who have won everything, many of whom have been here for almost ten years. It's clearly an extraordinary basis.

“Now we have to work on the motivation, the pride, it's about putting together the personal and team objectives and start from there. Milan have won everything but want to continue growing, compete again: to do that you need the right motivation.”

Milan have another important test to face on Monday evening as they host Juventus in the annual Berlusconi Cup which precedes the start of the Serie A season.

Leo's statement about new signings, if any, being "minor" kind of worries me. I wonder what his definition of minor is. Surely not Fabregas. :(

our management seems to have no problem trading losses for less money.

I imagine de silvestri will NOT arrive summer, cause of injury situation. That being said winter he'll be cheap cause he can essentially walk for free....

Hernanes will be similar situation, he is primed to live brazil just like thiago silva, but by january his fee will be lower :-/

Struggling Milan Will Make One Big Signing - Luciano Moggi
The former director believes that the Rossoneri need to do better during this transfer market if they want to compete with Inter and Juventus.
16 Aug 2009 21:18:24
Former Juventus director Luciano Moggi has had plenty to say on his former club recently

Former transfer guru Luciano Moggi thinks that Milan are not good enough to finish above third place this season as they still have a few problems to solve, particularly in the defensive department.

However, Moggi believes that the Rossoneri's president Silvio Berlusconi still has an important signing up his sleeve.

"Berlusconi will invent something," declared the former Juventus director to ilsussidiario.net.

"Milan have a big defensive problem. The first point is definitely tied to the goalkeeper: with [Flavio] Roma and [Marco] Storari they have not solved the defensive problems.

"For an ambitious club like Milan this is a serious thing. However, the Rossoneri are a squad who frightens and this is already 50% to beat the teams of a medium level.

"In the end they will finish in third place, which is worth the entrance to the Champions League."

Milan will face Juventus on Monday evening in the classic Berlusconi Cup which precedes the start of the Serie A scheduled for next week, with the Rossoneri facing Siena away from home on Saturday evening.

Moggi mite know a lot more about football, and in particular, the Serie A than I do, but I have to disagree with him here.

To-date we have shown that we have nothing going on team wise, especially in attack....and no one player is going to change that...honestly, the way we are playing, I doubt even the addition of Messi would make a big enough impact on the collective play of the side....(Or maybe I'm just jaded)

R80 is unconvincing, :rollani: and Pato doesn't seem fully ready to shoulder the burden of being the team's "go-to guy"...+ Leo hasn't been able to motivate the team at all....

It remains to b seen what a fit Hunter will bring to the table...

So, I beg to differ from the "transfer guru" as I think we will be out of european places by Jan, and in the bottom half of the table after the winter break. :moan:

Wonder if that would spark a reaction from Berlu? :dontkn:

I respectfully disagree with your opinion here. I think what Moggi was trying to say was that the one major addition to this squad is what is going to take us from being a mid level team to third place. As it stands, and this team isn't even good enough to challenge for the third spot without Ronaldinho suddenly finding his old form again. With a Kaka level signing, however, we can still challenge the CL spot and end up in third place. Sure, one player, no matter how great he is, will not make us into a CL champion or help us become a serious challenger for Serie A, but he will improve our team considerably. Rome wasn't built in a day, and Milan has to rebuild one player at a time.

Hey Slifersd, no probs...I don't expect everyone to agree with me, and I like the way u have stated ur disagreement...

However, if we take a closer look at both arguments, we seem to be saying the same thing, though my version may b a bit more pessimistic....the point remains: it would take a "Kaka" type purchase to get us to the UCL places this season....and my point is that I don't think it will happen.

And becuz it won't happen, we are potentially capable of going on a downward spiral that any coach would find difficult to counter, and an inexperienced coach I fear will find impossible.

Keep saying that but Milan can't beat a horrid Portsmouth side. Go watch tottenham, modric, corluka, palacio and Defoe could probably walk into milans lineup and I don't even think they're a great team. How about everton? I bet we'd love arteta for one. Hell I'd take tim cahill. Fulhams defender hangeland could walk into our first 11. I could keep going... Look I prefer serie a cause of the creativity of play and variations of tactics but the arrogance of Italy thinking there's no real talent in englang outside the top 4 is a reason Italy had fallen second rate.

Btw on the defense point it's fair to say the only tee world class defenders ( I'm not counting nests just cause off injury it's to be seen how he'll play) r in England. Italys best defender (cheillini) wouldn't sniff time in englands top 4.

I'm not saying our defense is great, but if there is CONSTANT pressure on it, then they will conceede, it's common sense. If Ronaldinho keeps losing balls, and giving them away like samples, them repetitive counter attacks will get to us.

We need an attack that can hold the ball and create something out of it. Really, Abate and Flamini look like the only two players that can win possesion and hold it.

Patistico
16-08-2009, 20:46
In no way am I optimistic about winning any titles this season, but I certainly do think many here are being overly pessimistic. I think Rick's post was spot on. I add some opinion below.

From last year, we've lost:
------------------

Kaka. Not the Ballon d'Or Kaka that won us the CL, but rather a Kaka whose game was relatively mediocre (though his presence was enough to keep defenders occupied and open space for others) and who was continually bothered by injury.

Carlo. Certainly one of the greatest coaches, but who had developed strong friendships with players that negatively affected his choices, and who also played relatively defensively against many weaker teams.

Thus far, we've gained:
------------------

A thus-far healthy Nesta, who even in his current form is pure class.

Silva, who in my opinion has been VERY good in pre-season and has formed a great understanding with Nesta.

Gattuso, who was consistently our best player last season before getting injured.

Abate: not very effective yet, but hopefully we can figure out how to benefit from his pace.

Leonardo. Who doesn't display the same nepotism towards Seedorf as Carlo did. Not having to play Seedorf every game from the start is a fantastic benefit that we shouldn't underestimate.

Huntelaar: Really, a quality striker who scored a goal in almost every game at Ajax. I know it was the Dutch league, but if you've seen him play I'm sure you were impressed. Hopefully he will settle in soon.

Borriello: Disappointing pre-season. I don't have much hope for him. I think he can most wisely be used as bait for a transfer for a proper player.

Dinho (b/c he actually gets playing time now). Certainly not as effective as Kaka, but good enough that we can't just simply say "we lost Kaka without replacement". We got Dinho instead; even if he's only 60% of Kaka, that means we only lost 40% of Kaka.

------------------

So all in all, I think we have a stronger side than last year... as long as we stay healthy. If the team can gel together, I think we'll be competitive and clinch 3rd. All this talk about "relegation" is pure nonsense... and probably should not be mentioned again.

Inter lost Ibra and still have not found a creative replacement. Milito is definitely a great striker, but doesn't have the creativity of Ibra. I think Inter will face some difficulty next year as a result.

Juve have improved with the signing of Diego, but IMO Diego isn't a HUGE improvement over Seba. Unless they can figure out how to effectively play Seba and Diego together, I don't think the 25M for Diego was worth the marginal improvement over Seba. And Cannavaro is nowhere near his prime.

Other teams like Fiorentina, Udinese, and Lazio have certainly improved, but not enough to overtake Milan.

The starting XI is really only missing a full back and Dinho in better shape. Subs of course are a different issue.

------------------

And I definitely don't think that preseason was a fair indicator of our abilities. Rarely did we play with the starting XI (if ever, I can't remember). And Leo clearly was trying players in different positions.

rt9

Agreed with Patistico and Rick. It is not all that bad, folks. I know losing Kaka was a huge blow, but this team is still capable of winning. I would put us on par with Juve at present and still above the likes of Roma, Napoli, Fiorentina, Lazio. We still have this habit of losing to small teams, so let's see if there's any improvement this year.

As for a new signing, I also feel that Galliani/Berlusconi have something up their sleeves. It's definitely not going to be Fabregas, but if it is a big prospect like Hernanes, I would be more than happy.

I understand exactly what you are saying, and believe me, i am not looking forward to this upcoming season at all. Though I think bottom half of the league is a little too pessemistic, to say we will finish 7th and miss out on Europe altogether isn't all that impossible to me.

As far as the transfer market is concerned, my point is, for a team that is rebuilding itself, we need every single good purchase we can get. We can't always have a Kaka type of purchase, but a Fabregas or even Sneijder should be more than welcomed here. We can't always shoot for the moon and hope we can strike a jackpot the way we did with Shevchenko, Pirlo and Kaka. To me, having Sneijder playing in Seedorf's spot makes us a lot better and because of that, we should be trying to sign him. And who knows, with the right chemistry and a little luck, a Sneijder or Robben might just be what it takes to rejuvenate the attack and lead us to third place.

in this article he also said that our formation for this season will be 4-3-1-2, because he cannot develop his 4-3-3 formation (with wingers)...because we don't have them ;) heh
I think from the start he wanted to play 4-3-1-2? Didn't he say it clearly in past time? 4-3-1-2, with 2 attacking fullbacks, 3 CMs, 1 Dinho, and 2 pure striker. He NEVER said that he will play with wingers! NEVER! If he ever said that, the wingers he meant are wingbacks! C'mon... So it's not that we don't have wingers, we don't NEED them.

Too much pessimism here....although I can understand why.

However, Warro I know you are dissapointed by the preseason....but come on man. Overtaken by Udinese, Lazio and Napoli??? It's tough to swallow. By Fiorentina is one thing...it already happened the year before last. Roma still strong although they had a pathetic season last year and they haven't done anything significant in the market either. Napoli is going to be strong.....very strong indeed......but I still think they lack quality and depth but we'll see how they'll manage in the later stages. As for Lazio and Udinese....that's just an insult man. Lazio hasn't improved one bit and neither has Udinese. As a matter of fact both sides are weakened on top of their not so convincing seasons.

All I'm saying is that we are all disapointed by the pre-season (although I wrote a post yesterday of why I think we should wait at least until October-November until we call the devil in to sleigh players and coaches) but saying that we'll finish behind sides like Lazio and Udinese is a little too much pessimism.

Come on Warro. Keep the faith man. Give the team a few weeks to gel and train the way they are supposed to.....and not only travel around the world.....The way the pre-season was set up (commercial value only), it was a failure waiting to happen and don't be surprised if we have a slow start because of it either.

u say udinese napoli and lazio lack depth but so do we.... this preseason has been all depth and it shows, we lack it. Aside from the regular first 11.... i mean abate looks like he can play, flamini is a good dm and pippo is pippo, and then its pretty bleak.

And although i love pirlo, gattuso, seedorf, nesta, etc etc. Reality is age cacthes up to everyone and mabe d'agostino or ledesma or whoever may never have the careers of them ilan players... they r younger, and more capable than fading players. And thats what scares me... some players are great till 36+ and some are done in there early 30s.... we are counting so much on older players and 'recovering' players. We are counting on nesta to come back after a year + off.... ronaldinho to re-find himself, gattuso to still run like he's 25, i mean when i look at milan, i see literally no certainties...

and on the contrary those teams like napoli, udinese... there may lack the total world class ability most of our squad posesses or has posessed during there careers... but they do have lots of young promising talent to go w/ players who are of age who know there role. While the may not have made 'signings' do you really think zarate, hamsik, lavezzi, sanchez and on and on will not get better?????? As opposed to milan who have pato, who will improve and literally every other player should only get worse

The way i see it, we'll need some real luck to pass juve or inter. And while we should be 3rd.... fiorentina, genoa, napoli, udinese, lazio, roma, maybe even sampdoria all posses the ability to pass us

I think its always nice to have a balance of experience and youth in the team. Coz from experience you know what is to be done and with the youth there would be a burst of energy levels.

Right now all i can say is that we are in a bloody mess and i hope for **** sake this whole situation would change and i believe it can with one or two more signings and plus that spark which is missing in the form of a win. I m just hoping against hope that we beat juve in the Trofeo berlusconi and get the confidence that is much needed back.

Have to wonder if some people watch football if they think a player from everton or spurs or fulham would walk into our team. Things are going bad right now, but other than our wide def & am we still have a very good squad.

If Leo can find the right balance, we are more than a capable of beating anyone we play, but our depth is very poor, and we should have given some youngsters more playing time to see which could be ready to compete on a regular basis.

As for league position I don't think Napoli, Lazio, or Sampdoria will be challenging us even if they have some players that would compliment Milan.

rt9
17-08-2009, 02:00
Okay, let's be rational here. Yes, we lost Kaka---who IMO was our most influential and best player. Alright, we have a semi-replacement in Dinho. As someone else said, not a 100% replacement, but a replacement nonetheless.

We lost Maldini---Thiago Silva has replaced him.

We needed more depth in midfield----in came Abate, and Leo seems to trust Flamini. A midfield of Abate Pirlo Flamini is pretty damn good.

We needed a targetman---we got Huntelaar. So now we have 4 strikers---Huntelaar, Pippo, Pato, Boriello. That's not bad!

So all in all, yes I agree we are one or two signings away from being a MAJOR force, but all is not doom and gloom with the squad we have. We are still capable of challenging next year. We got to give the team and the new coach a proper chance. If we are stuck in mid-table by Christmas, I will be the first to call for managemnt to take responsibility or for Leo to be fired. But until then, let's just wait and see, patiently...sigh.

I think we should see if we can strengthen before enf of this month, and maybe see if Leo can find a formation we can use before we think of getting rid of him. Besides if he was signed as a cheap option it'll be somebody expensive who would replace him.

We clearly won't get it, but I'd argue we need it.

I think Borriello should really be 3rd choice. Pippo at 36 really shouldn't be relied on as a primary backup, and having Borri doesn't convince.

Zambro is ok for now, but he's clearly in decline. Realistically, there's little certainty as to how he'll perform. He's a big questionmark imo. Our CBs are all questionmarks too, which is worrying.

Midfield is same, Dinho's a huge questionmark and we really only have Flamini who can push up from deep. Seedorf to some degree, but how many positions can he backup?

Our problem is twofold. One, we have too many risks where it's unlikely we'll luck out. The other is we lack depth overall. We still have too much deadweight in the squad which results in a big squad but little depth in quality.

If the pieces fall into place, then we can compete. However, to truly be challenging then I think we need some major work.
