Keep saying that but Milan can't beat a horrid Portsmouth side. Go watch tottenham, modric, corluka, palacio and Defoe could probably walk into milans lineup and I don't even think they're a great team. How about everton? I bet we'd love arteta for one. Hell I'd take tim cahill. Fulhams defender hangeland could walk into our first 11. I could keep going... Look I prefer serie a cause of the creativity of play and variations of tactics but the arrogance of Italy thinking there's no real talent in englang outside the top 4 is a reason Italy had fallen second rate.
Btw on the defense point it's fair to say the only tee world class defenders ( I'm not counting nests just cause off injury it's to be seen how he'll play) r in England. Italys best defender (cheillini) wouldn't sniff time in englands top 4.
Yes Milano I will stick by my guns because team for team Serie A would beat the EPL. The top 6 as I said would tip in favour of the EPL but the tactics football and overall quality in Italy it stronger than the EPL.
Im living in Ireland so all I have is the EPL rammed down my throat until I vomit. I made my choice young I watched the Epl and Serie A and Italian football swayed me. Granted in the 90's it was number 1 and nothing came close. But as the gap has closed and English teams have become more successfull (due to play on the break football BTW even though only Italian teams play on the break according to sky boring and negative) the gap is not that huge.
When the Italian league was king there was not a team in England that could of lived wit the top sides in Italy. As much as the EPL has "DOMINATED" this decade apparently. They only have 2 Champions leagues to show for it Milan , Barcelona & Real Madrid have that themselves some dominence.

Just joining the discussions about EPL VS Serie A.
A couple of things.
1. When Serie A was the best league in the World in the late 80s to mid 90s. There was no EPL, and the top division in England was banned from playing European Football due to fans violence. Thus a lot of the top talents just would not go to England.
2. Over the last 10 years or so. Maybe EPL only had 2 CL champs, and Milan had 2 themselves. Thats just second to Liga with 4. But if you look at how many IT teams made it to the final 8 VS EPL teams. EPL teams had a lot of more.
3. Presently, EPL is a better league than Serie A in pretty much everything except of the tactical side of the game.
4. To be honest, I think alot of players outside of the top 4 in the EPL can play in any of the top 8 teams in Serie A. Even in Milan. Corluka, Modric, A Young, Tevez, Robino, De Jong, Barry, and even King.
Honestly, I really do see why people still don't give credits or ignore the EPL dominance over the past decade. I think that's something teams and leagues should learn of EPL success and try to do it themselves.

In no way am I optimistic about winning any titles this season, but I certainly do think many here are being overly pessimistic. I think Rick's post was spot on. I add some opinion below.
From last year, we've lost:
------------------
Kaka. Not the Ballon d'Or Kaka that won us the CL, but rather a Kaka whose game was relatively mediocre (though his presence was enough to keep defenders occupied and open space for others) and who was continually bothered by injury.
Carlo. Certainly one of the greatest coaches, but who had developed strong friendships with players that negatively affected his choices, and who also played relatively defensively against many weaker teams.
Thus far, we've gained:
------------------
A thus-far healthy Nesta, who even in his current form is pure class.
Silva, who in my opinion has been VERY good in pre-season and has formed a great understanding with Nesta.
Gattuso, who was consistently our best player last season before getting injured.
Abate: not very effective yet, but hopefully we can figure out how to benefit from his pace.
Leonardo. Who doesn't display the same nepotism towards Seedorf as Carlo did. Not having to play Seedorf every game from the start is a fantastic benefit that we shouldn't underestimate.
Huntelaar: Really, a quality striker who scored a goal in almost every game at Ajax. I know it was the Dutch league, but if you've seen him play I'm sure you were impressed. Hopefully he will settle in soon.
Borriello: Disappointing pre-season. I don't have much hope for him. I think he can most wisely be used as bait for a transfer for a proper player.
Dinho (b/c he actually gets playing time now). Certainly not as effective as Kaka, but good enough that we can't just simply say "we lost Kaka without replacement". We got Dinho instead; even if he's only 60% of Kaka, that means we only lost 40% of Kaka.
------------------
So all in all, I think we have a stronger side than last year... as long as we stay healthy. If the team can gel together, I think we'll be competitive and clinch 3rd. All this talk about "relegation" is pure nonsense... and probably should not be mentioned again.
Inter lost Ibra and still have not found a creative replacement. Milito is definitely a great striker, but doesn't have the creativity of Ibra. I think Inter will face some difficulty next year as a result.
Juve have improved with the signing of Diego, but IMO Diego isn't a HUGE improvement over Seba. Unless they can figure out how to effectively play Seba and Diego together, I don't think the 25M for Diego was worth the marginal improvement over Seba. And Cannavaro is nowhere near his prime.
Other teams like Fiorentina, Udinese, and Lazio have certainly improved, but not enough to overtake Milan.
The starting XI is really only missing a full back and Dinho in better shape. Subs of course are a different issue.
------------------
And I definitely don't think that preseason was a fair indicator of our abilities. Rarely did we play with the starting XI (if ever, I can't remember). And Leo clearly was trying players in different positions.
Agree and disagree mate.
I think Diego and Seba(who has not play much last season) will do wonders for Juve next year. And having Canna in the back will only help Buffon and CHellini. Then they have Melo, who is waiting to explode.
Inter might have lost Ibra, but they did gain Lucio, Eto and Milito. Since I watched them up close two weeks ago in Beijing, I have to say that they are still the best team in Serie A. Although they did lost to Lazio that game but it is still pre season and Lazio was really really lucky.
As of now, I really can't see why you can say that Milan is a better team than last year. Esp the Second half when Becks was playing and Kaka was injury free.
T. Silva and Nesta being healthy are an upgrade from Cap, no doubt about it, but can we expect Nesta to be injury free the whole season?
Kala has lost his passion for the game, you can see that in his eyes. Bonera might be the surprise player next year, while Favalli is another year older.
Janku and Zambro are clearly on the decline, but hope that a WC year might them better.
Overall, I do think the defense is more solid than last year but Nesta must stay healthy.
The midfield is where the problems lie. It still lacks mobility and speed.
Then there is the DInho factor.
If you ask me, on paper this Milan team is better than last year. BUT the truth is, this is a team full of questions mark and truly lacks quality players.

but then these players could walk into any top 4 team in england
cassano, hamsik, santacroce, criscito, lavezzi, pazzini, de rossi, totti, mexes, juan, motta, vucinic, pizzaro, gargano, and these are all from teams that finished outside the top 4 in italy last year, maybe take away roma's players and put fiorentina there.
overall, serie a in all is better and is more competitive and has more talent spread through the league.
Gabriel489
17-08-2009, 06:45
Personally I don't think Serie A has more talents spread through the league. I think the BIG 4 in EPL are just too talented for the rest of the EPL.
Just like how Barcelona and Real are too talented for Liga.
Don't get me wrong, Serie A is not a bad league but it is just not as good as the EPL at the moment.
If Italy copied the english there would no youth coming through, and the league would be about 3 billion in depth too. That's not allowed in Italy, so Italy can't compete for some players, but I hope clubs with massive depths dissapear and aren't allowed into Europe for the good of football. Rules need to be changed about youth players too. Any english team could steal a Milan product under 18 for practically nothing. It's a disgrace.

I agree with almost every word here! It's a pure rubbish when media compares us to Fiorentina, Genoa or Lazio. And what the **** is so special about Juve?! Suddenly they became a title contenders and we became a "mid table" side. OK, they bought Diego, he's good, Melo is the most media-hyped Serie A player in years (goal.com rubbish) and Cannavaro is ridiculous, he's starter at NT because (ironically) Italy doesn't have a decent defender. He's not an improvement over Leggrottaglie. And I don't wanna even discuss Moliano, I'll just say that there are at least 10 left-backs in Serie A better than him and he's a starter. Take Pasqual, he's a cover player in Fiorentina and he's a world-class comparing with Molinaro. Then Sissoko. The player who just know how to run, a defensive midfielder with a chicken brain.
I hear many of you talking about 6 or 7 new players. What the **** Milan are then, a bunch of invalids, for God sake?!
We have 4 great strikers, we have 6 decent PURE midfielders (including Jankulovski, excluding Abate), we have a world-class CB partnership... And what's wrong about Zambrotta? He's not the player he once was (the best full back in the world by mile, that is), but even today there are few right backs better than him. All we really and realistically need is a left back. And I've heard many great things about Gareth Bale. It would be nice if we could take Van Der Vaart as a Ronaldinho's cover, but we're good as we are. Don't forget that Pato could be AM also in some matches.

Well, Totti is not the same player he used to be, in deed Totti would be booed alot at the San Siro because at the present time he is not Totti but walking Totti just like our Seedorf.
Cassano faild in La Liga which is more suitable to his style than the EPL so there is no gaurantee he can performe in England
Criscito & Santacroce have 0 International caps never played in any major club or compition and are very young and cant make to any top 4 teams in England because the 2 or 3rd choice defenders are dream signinig for top 4 team in Italy, ALex, Carvalho Agger, Galas, Vidic, Ferdinand, Terry, Ashly Cole, Evra, Sagna, Clichy, Eboue, etc are all dreams to Milan, Juve and Inter.
Gargano, Pazzini and Pizzaro are not good enough and Mexes is the most over rated defender in the world there is a reason Roma conceded all those goal last year and I assure you its not Juan's mistake.
Hamsik & Lavezzi are class and can make to any team in the world in the near futur but once more right now on the expense of who? Rooney, Berbatov, Drogba, Torres, Van Pirse, Archavien, Nani, Balack, Nasri, Kalou, Joe Cole, Valancia, Robinho, Tevez etc are all better at the moment.
Only Juan(always in jured) Vucinic and De rossi can make to the top 4 teams in England you know why? because they already play in a top team in Italy at the moment.

but that's the thing, no player who doesn't play in top 5 (including man city) in england wouldn't be a starter here or in juve or inter, meanwhile a couple of players not in top 5 (present top 4 and roma) could walk into a PL top 5 team
Save for Sagna & Evra the other wide def are tosh. Agger & Gallas are mistake prone, nani, kalou, valencia are average, Lavezzi would kick out Berbatov & Robinho from their teams, whilst Tevez despite being a hard worker doesn't score more.
Stop over-rating these media creations.
Mexers is over-rated, but not any more than dopey ferdinand or dirty kunt terry.

Whats this non-sense saying those premiership players would walk into our teams? That's just propostorous and so exaggerated. There are a few players that would come to the first team here, and there are a few here that would go to the first teams there (Aquilani being the most recent).
Anyway, Di Gennaro could injured and is out for two months. Might force the hand of our management to get an attacking midfielder?

The non sense is to think that a Seria A players are better than the EPL ones, not to start comparing the head to head results in the last 2 years between English and Italian club, really embarrissing.
Outside of the top 4 the epl is a kick and run league, and even if some teams have tried to buy success they still lack a philosophy.
Some of the results have been bad, but Serie A clubs were allowed to operate at such financial losts with massive debts, then Italy would be better than the epl.
The italians are better than there english counterparts, whilst the foreigners are just as good. It's just there are more of them in epl, and they are made look better by the sub standard approach to tactics & technique in england.

I don't know if you guys watch games on sky. But maybe here is why I do not like the EPL (ofcourse nothing to do with the teams or players) its the pure venom filled hatred towards Italian teams.
This might stem from Italian league dominence 89 - 98 or maybe because and this i think is correct they do not show Italian football on sky.
But from the moment the CL starts until the Serie A sides are gone they say how bad Italian football is how slow it is how boring it is how negative how defensive.
If anyone has watched Liverpool ever Chelsea against a quality side not so much man u infact not them at all. But all Chelsea and the pool do is defend oddly enough when an EPL side or Celtic and Rangers its great a job done great heart great battling. And it pi$$es me off.
Because Ive seen Italian teams play a match in a normall fassion but they will call it anti football typical negative Italian approach. Now I know these guys are not told what to say but as Graeme Souness said on Irish television they are told what not to say.
But Richard Keys and Andy Gray take particular pleasure in bashing Seire A , sure the EPL is doing better at the moment in Europe but the gap between EPL and Serie A is nothing like the gap between Serie A and the EPL in 91 -98. Someone mentioned EPL didnt exsist and the teams werent in europe when the italian sides dominated. Well they were the league was set up in 1992 and the teams were back in europe in 1991.
So these are the reasons why I get annoyed that people proclaim the EPL to so superior to Serie A. When the top four teams are but from if 5t down played the same in Italy i think Seire A would come out on top.....End Rant!!:v46:
Jay Crisp, no offense but please, could you do an effort with the way you write etc for the people who can speak English because they learned it at school and not because they live in the UK, USA or any other country where English is the language (to say it clearly, it was hard to understand your last post). I ask you that because you are from Ireland ...
Anyway, back to the topic and ... again nothing new about any potential arrival !!
Oh, I forgot, about Cissokho, do you remember, most of the people here started to bash our management for not taking him at 15M and trying to reduce his price ... after 2 games in Lyon, he's done nothing particular. They start to think that he was overpriced because he is good at defence (in those 2 games so far, against two teams that are not top teams) but didn't bring anything in attack. Some people even already ask why they bought him !!
I know it's still early to criticize this player, but if people react like that about him in Lyon, how would it be in Milan ??
It's because of rupert murdoch's personal battle with berlu that sky slates italian football so much.
Where has Galliani been for the last week? Hasn't said much, I don't know if thats a good thing or a bad thing.
Berlusconi too, no news on them or Galliani, Braida's where abouts?

a pretty fair post.
This doesnt mean there isnt talent in italy, and i still prefer serie A football because it is more of a thinking mans game, but i think we r past the point where 'epl players cant play in italy'. I mean a 33 year old beckham came in and rejuvenated our team!?
There are still too many crap players in england who r basically pace and nothing else (aglobonhor). But at the same time, there r a million players in italy who have some technique and do well in italy, who can't play in spain or england cause the move like snails...
In many ways though, england is just more advanced... in terms of stadium deals, tv deals, and then we get to the field....
It's a disgrace.
youth? england give youth moe chances than anyone. Do you think federico macheda would sniff the field in italy, and now he's 1 of most promising strikers in epl. And why? Cause fergie has enough faith to stick 1 or 2 promising youth into his team of exerienced talents. Now look at giovinco? That kid could start literally anywhere... he is that good, but juve wont let him on the field... and the sad thing is when he does come on, he generally changes the game. UCL vs. chelsea prime example, games dont get bigger than that.
The dept thing is kind of complicated... if its debt like arsenal, i think its okaY (They borrowed to build a new stadium and are paying it off) if its debt like liverpool or man utd its unfortunate (clubs had zero debt until purchased, the new owners couldnt afford the clubs so they essentially borrowed from a bank, hence the debt.... a la how people buy houses in the USA) but if its debt like man city, who just has a rich sugar daddy paying WAAAAYYYY beyon there means to self-produce then thats just wrong.
BTW worst violator is real madrid, perez went and got interest free loans (something NO OTHER team has access to) to buy players in a recession???
and the rule change is league by league... italy makes itself easy to be poached.

Tonight, before the game we will know why is so clam this days.
We will get a new player and i cant wait to see who is
Comparing players from Italy and England doesn't make sense.
There will always be someone who praises one player and bashes another.
Gallas - Mexes......everyone has his own opinion.
But the thing is, modern football is played with pace and Serie A is the one that really lacks some compared to EPL.
It's not important if you like tactics (like me) more than "just running"
I remember when a lot of people were bashing me on another forum when I was saying that Milan would probably lose to Arsenal in the CL, saying that we are the great Milan and they have nothing to ask for against us and now we are the ones who want those very same Arsenal players.
I'm not hearing Arsenal wanting any Seedorfs or Ronaldinhos.
oh yeah......another funny thing someone said:"Beckham came here to rejuvenite our squad" :wow:

Wow, this has got to show you how piss poor our transfer campaign has been :) We tried to talk about transfers, there weren't any. I do not know why but like alot of people here I just have a feeling that there will be a big announcement tonight. Although a big announcement could mean selling Pato or something , but for now Im looking forward to the game.
I wonder whether this surprise signing will happen....
It's been really quiet...
The best surprise I'm waiting for tonight is a victory, just to allow this team to taste the victory again just before the start of the championship !! :D
Sorry, not going to happen. :)

17-08-2009, 13:24
when I saw 'last post by Brasileiro' I was excited, I thought you were going to come with some nice news from Brazil of us signing Hernanes..... unfortunately nothing...... and Brasiliero, there is NO WAY we will sign Fabregas
btw - we still haven't used our remaining Non-EU spot!
Nah...thereīs nothing to be excited, my friend...at least from Brazil.
On a side not, I just saw yersterday that Chelsea turn down a 20 millions Euro offer from Real Madrid to buy Alex. Madrid new coach Pelegrini wanted the Thank to upgrade his defense, asked for Valdano and they made the bid...ahhhhhhh Milan old times:sob:(from Madrid bid to Chelsea negative to sell)
Strange that they didnīt sell, since Carlo didnīt start him against Hull City, opting for Carvalho. It was said Guss Hiddink(now Chelsea football adviser) said them to not sell Alex.
But to be honest, after to see they turn down 20 millions, I canīt see how we would enter this "fight" nowadays...Even if now was the right time to bid, since the world Cup is near and Alex isnīt even more called for Dunga. Canīt see he staying on the bench until he finish his contract(may 2010) puting in jeopardy his spot on Brazil NT.
It would be great(imo) to see this back line:
------T. Silva----Nesta-----Alex---Zambro------
Since we donīt score, and have no service for the forwards, it would be a hell to score on us...
Regarding our only Non-Eu spot, I sure hope we spend it in a player that will be a factor here(from Brazil, Hernanes or Alex for example) and not in someone that will never to play, as its hapening in some of our recente desperate signs...
Canīt stand more this type of purchase:rolleyes:

You know, GeoTav...never talk here about Cissokho because only watched 2 or 3 games of Porto last season. But for some reason I had that "Vargas feeling" about him...
Vargas I watched several time here in South America and sometimes in Serie-A, and never understood the crazy hype about him. A normal player that all of sudden was our salvation last season. With Cissokho it was the same, but as I only saw the guy playing 2 or 3 times, I felt it as unfair to judge him as a player or make a bold prediction...
I also saw the first 2 games of Lyon this season, just to see this guy playing, and one more time became unipressed...and very disapointed because of the hype around him. Sure itīs still early, but I canīt help to imagine what he could have do in a pressure situation that he would face in Milan.
To be honest, and maybe a little prejudiced, I always take with a grain of salt every "new thing" comming from Porto. Itīs incredible how Pinto da Costa&Co always over hyped his players...From Quaresma to Hulk, passing for Bruno Alves(canīt believe they ask 30 Millions for him and still some clubs maybe are crazy to pay), always watched Porto games, and thereīs few prospects to be excited...
But for some reason, every year thereīs a must buy guy from that club that I donīt understand...
soooo the game started and "the announcment" hasn't been made yet?
aah, the optimists :)

a pretty fair post.
In many ways though, england is just more advanced... in terms of stadium deals, tv deals, and then we get to the field....
youth? england give youth moe chances than anyone.
Couldnīt to write it Better, Milano84...perfect.
Itīs funny people think the Non-EU Italy Rules are protecting Italy NT when the Italian coaches do the most damages. Italian coaches generally do what Dunga is doing right now with Pato.
They have no faith in their own youngsters and the example of Giovinco is perfect. Macheda also would not see the field in Italy in years. A so repected coach like Rannieri(sp?) was killing a talent like Jovinco and no one said nothing. As Brazilian I hope the best for Diego(and rate him high), but itīs incredible that they had bought him without give a proper chance to their own talent:dontkn:
Serie A is losing ground as a big league and market, and it will damage more than help Italian NT...at least in my vision.
Berlusconi: "The market is closed. This is the team."

Abate with an excellent cross to Pato for the goal. 1-1
Too bad though.... this scoreline won't spur management to buy anyone afterwards

AC Milan Coach Leonardo Considering Ignazio Abate For Left Back Position
Leonardo revealed that the club may not buy a new left-back but try youth product Ignazio Abate in that position instead.

Despite the recent arrival of striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, Milan fans are hoping that the club's transfer campaign is not quite over yet. The likes of Marek Jankulovski and Gianluca Zambrotta aren't getting any younger, so according to many a full-back would be a welcome addition to the club.
Lazio's Lorenzo De Silvestri, Tottenham Hotspurs' Gareth Bale, and Real Madrid's Royston Drenthe have already been linked with the club, but now it seems they are considering a different solution altogether.
Coach Leonardo apparently intends to use youth product Ignazio Abate, who usually plays as a winger, in a full-back role.
"His ideal position is of a winger in a 4-4-2 system," the coach said, as quoted by Goal.com Italia, "but we have thought about putting him at the back. Unfortunately we have not been able to put this into practice because we were missing some midfielders during the preparation period. He has to learn the defensive mechanisms, but he runs a lot and can adapt."
Abate himself has confirmed that, in order to play more, he is willing to change his position.
"I've talked about it with the coach various times," the 22-year-old said. "It could be a possibility. In the last few matches, due to the absences of [Gennaro] Gattuso, [Massimo] Ambrosini, and [Andrea] Pirlo, the coach opted to play me in midfield, but as soon as there is an opportunity we will try it.
"I already played as a wing-back with Modena in Serie B, at Empoli I was a left winger and a playmaker, and at Torino a wide player in a 3-5-2 system..."

left back eh... thought he was always on the right
Yeah, goal.com is stupid. What Abate and Leo mean is that he'll play full-back (right back) and Zambro moves left.
I'm curious to see how this works out. He certainly has the lungs and a great cross, but is he disciplined enough? Maybe with Gattuso (or even Becks) protecting, it might work out well... But i'm not holding my breath.
Nesta and Thiago played incredibly well tonight, lets hope they keep getting better. I think all we need now is a full back, that's it. I can live with Huntelaar/Borri, and Pirlo/Seedorf, R80/Seedorf. Hernanes would be a nice gift, though.

abate playing left back it is about as likely as fabregas being a milan player lol, doesn't berlusconi remember that milan has albertazzi and antonini for that particular position. we should never pay any attention to what a politician declares it is either a lie or his statements are motivation by political realities.

1. leo said it
2. antonini never played fb till he came to milan in 2008
3. abate is bigger and stronger than antonin and janku
4. we need attacking fb, abate might be good for it... he's played wingback in a 3-5-2

1- the statement about berlusconi to reflex his recent statements about the transfer market being closed but i have to admit i thought he may of made those comments.
2-with di gennaro injured and a likelyhood of cardacio being loaned out is it really a best use of milan resources to put abate as a left back?
3-antonini has a year more experience of full back football than abate
4-the entire idea of a economically self suffecient club would dictate that we use more youth players in the lineup to cut the cost of transfers hence why albertazzi would be a better opinion
5- we would be leaving the likes of bonera jankulovski( maybe 10 games a season) and oddo on the bench

My conclusions after the match:
- As I had anticipated, with a healthy starting XI we are a very good team.
- Diego's goal came off a deflection; he shouldn't have even celebrated.
- There were two obvious penalties ignored (hand balls). We completely dominated Juve.
- Nesta + Silva is a fantastic partnership
- Antonini sucks. He is far worse than Jank, who was good going forward, but bad in defense. Luckily, Juve did not capitalize on Jank's mistakes.
- Pato showed great potential. Both Pirlo and T Silva made some amazing long passes to him.
However, we clearly do not have any decent backups for any position. And there's no way everyone can stay healthy and play every game for an entire season.

Hail Milan. :D We finally won! Is that Juventus "Scudetto favorites"?! They're miserable. They scored from the shot that even wasn't on target. Apart from that shot, they weren't able to shoot on target all night. And was that the "great" Felipe Melo who felt down on his ass with Ronaldinho dribbling past him?! :)
To be serious, Juve isn't a real contender for us. It's only Inter. Their tactic is DEFENSE and only defense, which doesn't surprise considering that Ferrara is Lippi's school.
I've just read that Leonardo is considering Abate for a left-back position (right-back actually). Funny I was going to mention him as a possible solution. :) He really could fit. He has pace, stamina, will, good cross (which he proved tonight) and he's young, so he can learn to play defense. During that time, he can recover with his pace. Just remember Serginho with awful defensive positioning, he was a great LB for us because he had pace to cover his bad positioning. With Gattuso on this side, I'm beginning to believe that we will finally use at least one player from our youth system, well it was the time, after 15 years.

I think its ridiculous that now that Milan has won, goal.com says "Milan win on pens" but when we lost, on pens, it was not packaged like that, it was LOOK AT RELEGATION-BOUND MILAN, THEY LOST, AGAIN!
I have to say, while Janku might have played well today, I'm not confident that he will continue to play that well the entire season. I kind of wish that Flamini would just play RB for this season, and Zambro played LB, and then we could play a midfield of Abate--Pirlo--Gattuso.
Was it just me, or was Felipe Melo garbage? 21 million Euros, for what? I think Juve better pray for Sissoko to get healthy fast, Ronaldinho made Melo look like a fool today.
Regardless, I really think we need a FB. I think with Ambro and Seedorf yet to return, the midfield is going to take care of itself, especially with Flamini and Abate there to offer the sort of pace to help out Pirlo. I'd love to have a Pancaro-type player for this season, just so that next summer we can get some real additions.
I agree that Abate might be a good option for a FB, but, I hope he doesn't get stuck in that position. He is a great force in the midfield.
I just don't see why we can't even get some players on loan, why can't we grab a Marco Motta-type player on loan? Hell, I'd take Pasqual from Fiorentina on loan for this season.
I totally agree we need backups. Was it me or did you guys notice Zambro and Janku not going forward as much today. It is almost as though we told them to play defense and take your chances going forward. Don't push it every time. Most our attack came from the middle.
Oh, before you guys ravage Juve don't forget what happened when Amauri came on. This guy is class and if he and Diego start clicking withuot injury they are going to be pretty lethal (together they wre pretty potent until Diego was pulled mind you).
I would honestly be satisfied with a FB and for the remaining players to be healthy. A minor injury here and there shouldn't be too much of a set back. Apart from that, I really felt we are getting closer to clicking together and thus being complete. I'm also and optomist :)

I think most of you are correct.
1.Defense (Goalie too)
2.Striker
3.MF
I think thats the order of things that we need to fill. Ambro, Seedorf are perfect back ups (or starters in some games)
Even if we lost this game in PK (it would not been easy for me ) I was just happy to see Milan play well finally. I was excited, yelling, cheering. This is what i want this year. Hit the crossbar, take shot, shots, and more shots on gol. I hope this gives the lads some much needed confidence.
And about Juve. They were not themsleves tonight. And i respect that team, they will do just fine. Diego is a great signing. Melo did not impress me, Amauri was good too.

for first team, the only think thats imperative is 1 fb..... i would suggest we need an extra creative mid and creative striker, along w/ a viable extra fb and goalie. The sad thing to me is this squad is not too far off from being able to win league and challenge deep into serie A, it'd require a few additional moves... picking up a hernanes... swapping boriello for another creative attacker like pastore or lavezzi etc etc. Signing a bale and criscito.
I mean if u think about it thats what barca did last year... brought in a new coach, promoted some youth (busquets), signed 1 star (dani alves) sold a star (ronnie) and signed a bunch of young or promising players to fill squad (pique, keita, hleb) to give them the depth they need.
My biggest fear is what happens when ron gets hurt? Even off form he's better than alternatives. What happens if pato goes down... a bori-hunt partnership is terrible in terms of creativity. what if pirlo gets hurt? And god forbid we lose silva or nesta. Injuries happen.... on top of 38 league matches a potential dozen more european fixtures u need a full squad. And while we may have 15 or 16 players i feel comfortable playing, we r razor thin at some important ones.... no trequarista or support striker depth, no good center backs after our starters.
Most of you here seem to be suggesting Abate or Flamini for the fullback position. I'm against it.
They look so good in their own natural positions in the middle of the field. Why don't we let them grow into those positions? Pirlo and Rino won't be here forever, you know.
Also, I think the amount of running you do down a flank conversely affects the quality of the crossing. Most of the fullbacks we purchase tend to look good for the first yrar or half year, but eventually their crossing starts going downhill when they've been bombing up and down the line for a few months. Players with good engines run out slower, but it doesn't mean that they won't eventually either. Just think of all the fullbacks we've used up over the years.
So I say, if Abate can cross like that playing in the middle of the field, then why not just leave him be? He'll run out of quality a heck of a lot slower than if he were made to run that extra 50 yards every attack.

Agreed. Jank was fine today going forward. At the back, not so much. Abate with his stature and inexperience definitely won't be a defensive improvement as a FB/WB. Obviously we all prefer signing a Silvestri/Criscito in the next week, but if we can't, better to wait until we can.
Of course, both Flamini and Abate can be used as a FB/WB if we have injuries to Zambro or Jank... but until then, I prefer not making this change.

the thing is i'm still not sold on abate in a 3man midfield, and we dont play a 4-4-2 so where exactly does he fit in.... in our tactics fb's need to essentially be cafu types bombing up the flank crossing... abate is fast, can cross, big and not afraid of challenges, works his ass off... i'm not saying overnight he'll be like this.... but zambrotta was a winger first too...

Nice to finally see a Milan win. as others have posted with the starting 11 that played today we will be fine. buying another fullback (who we desperately need to replace Janku) and another midfielder would really make this team contenders for the scudetto.
However i have 2 concerns; the bench and if this will be the team that starts for us every game. if anyone who started today goes down for a long period of time we're in trouble. Seedorf, Ambro, Antonini, Onyewu, Bonera, Kaladze, Boriello all look horrible. Inzaghi and Abate are the only two on the bench I have confidence in. The other worry is whether Flamini/Abate will play every game or if Leonardo will sit them for the "captain" Ambrosini or Seedorf. Hopefully he wont be as loyal to them as Carlo was and will realize our best players should be on the pitch.
Anyway we'll see next saturday when the season starts. Even though I think we had a bad transfer campaign thus far I'm still excited for the new season after watching them play tonight. I thought we looked real good against Juve.

Putting Abate at FB would get him on the field which is important due to the raw speed he brings to the team. he would also add pace to the right side of the field that Gattuso (our real captain) doesnt, and Flamini would bring pace that Zambro doesnt have on the left.
Our center defense is very strong, I think Bonera could step up if he has to play. I think the Gooch is basicly Senderos, but i think he would work for a game or two if he has to
No, I think Abate does pretty well on the right side of the 3. It's not a problem. He's very versatile, evidenced by his positions throughout his career.
I think we need another Seedorf as backup and a starting full back. Other than that, I think we're set. An injury to Pato and R80 would mean a forward line of Seedorf, Pippo and Borri, which is just fine for a few games. Don't forget Pirlo is an emergency Trequartista, and we can always play a makeshift 442.
I have a feeling we'll be getting an AM from Real, and a FB. I'd love to see Abate as a RB before they make a move for De Silvestre. Maybe it works out, who knows...
I think its ridiculous that now that Milan has won, goal.com says "Milan win on pens" but when we lost, on pens, it was not packaged like that, it was LOOK AT RELEGATION-BOUND MILAN, THEY LOST, AGAIN!

I enjoy your post and all, but pls don't compare Milan to Barcelona anymore.
As there are really different. Messi was the top 5 players when Dinho left. Eto was one of the top strikers at that time. Most of the Barcelona team were hitting their prime or in their prime-Xavi, Pugol, Inesta. Whereas Dinho is really not the top 5 players today, most of the team are either at the end of their prime or falling from their prime-Pirlo, Seedorf, Gattuso. Pato is good but like you said, if he gets injured, Milan will lose the only one who has speed up front and can dribble pass defenders.
I am really impressed with the way Abate played... seriously. I think a good coach can make a world class player out of him. We will see how good Leonardo is.
Besides that the team looked really well. The players just lacked some match day sharpness, which they will have a couple games into the season. If the squad stays injury free and can progress, I think we can safely challenge for the scudetto.
The thing that gives me hope is that we actually have some options with this team. If Ronnie is out, we can figure something out with the Abate - Pirlo - Flamini midfield. I wouldn't mind another full back and another midfielder, but I think we got off to a good start.

Euro Super League
I know this seems to be off topic, but if there is such a league, Milan will be spending more money. So it is related to Transfer, well sort of.
Personally, I am torn. On one hand, it will be a league show casing the best talents in football. On the other hand, it is hurting the National League.

Really played better last night than any other pre season game. But berlu saying the market is closed is a bit worrying I know they say these things all the time. But it looks like they are true this time there is no rumours no stories at all. We looked good last night but Juve were not exactly great and are a bit overratted IMO.
To compete in Seire A and the CL we need a better squad there is some good players like Abate , Silva , Pato , Flamini ,Nesta but the rest are getting older slower and a tad past it. Berlusconi dosn't want to or cannot spend money thats fine. But stop saying we are the best team in the world when we are not even close.
Last nights game was good and we are good enough to get top 3. What happens when Pirlo , Gattuso and Co. get older and we have a squad of 8 players. The whole mercato disgusts me. We brought in 80 + million from transfers and spend 6.5 or so half of Huntelaars money.
Im sick of winning nothing or even challenging. Maybe I have been spoiled but a club Like Milan should be aiming higher and sort out the team.
I have two quick things to say. Don't ruin Abate by playing him at LWB, as his adpation time will just damage the team as well! He does well enough as a middie, and could be seriously be a starter.....
Also, we must get a LB before the closing of the transfer window, and no, don't include Abate in a deal with DeSilvestri!

Well Carlo is now saying that Serie A is easy compared to the EPL. Amazing seeing as in 16 years managing in Italy he only managed to win the easy league once.
He also says that only 2 or 3 teams can win in Italy but more can win in England. Now I know that new players and managers always say things to connect with fans.
But this is just lies only 2 teams can win in England Man Utd and Chelsea there is other ways to please fans like results , Instead of saying stupid things.
If Serie A is easy Carlo why in 8 years did you only win one league title with Milan.

If Inter dont sign a creative midfielder then they will be ****ed badly, especially by us in the derby game, with them already lacking serious creativity in midfield, and also there only playmaker and creative man injured,Cambiasso, they wont get the ball in the back of the net in like a million years.
They only have T.Motta as the creative force, and only relying on him is a big joke,Muntari,Stankovic,Vieira, the have nobody who can spread the play and feed the strikers, they will struggle even more then us this season if they dont sign a proper midfielder, its rumoured that they are close to Sneijder,i hope its not true,if they dont sign him then they are in big trouble, every club in Serie A with some creativeness in them can outclass Inter on creative level,so they have BIG issues.
Juve have a not worthy Scudetto contenders defense. There wingbacks are even worser then those of Roma(Cicinho and Riise are way better then Grygera and.....Molinaro)and Canna and Chiellini seem a good pair on paper, but everybody could see they miss that understanding between them since the Confederations Cup,they are weak on the flanks and you could easily cause havoc in the middle because Chiellini and Canna cant work together just yet.
We are not the only ones who are having serious troubles,we also have big issues of course, but i think that those of Juve but especially Inter are also something to think about.

i tottally agree this time..melo was crap yesterday honeslty, and he was bad at trofeo tim too..maybe he needs more time..but i think ferara is using him really wrong, melo is not just a defensive med,he can do a lot more than that..
anyway,it was the firts match i really liked abate, and the first i didnt like antonini..
pirlo was sth else yesterday, his passes were pure class,i really liked pato too(i know he made some mistekes, but this kid has a lot of guts),dinho was fine,i wish he was more consistent even during the match..
Despite Quaresma being a total flopp, he was originally brought in to try and improve Inter's creativeness and to be our "Kaka." He played alright at Chelasea on loan, and may come good.....
Milan Are Aiming For The Scudetto - Adriano Galliani
The Rossoneri dignitary believes Klaas Jan Huntelaar will help wrestle the Scudetto from Inter...
18 Aug 2009 12:01:44
Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani believes the club are strong enough to challenge for the Scudetto this term.
Galliani saw his side emerge victorious from the Trofeo Berlusconi against Juventus on Monday night. The result appears to have helped increase his enthusiasm for the coming season.
"Last year were arrived equal to Juventus in second place and I think that we can challenge [for the Scudetto] this season as well," Galliani told Sky Sport Italia.
Despite the win over Juventus, Il Diavolo have not enjoyed the best of pre-seasons. But Galliani feels Klaas Jan Huntelaar will make the difference following his arrival from Real Madrid.
"We have Huntelaar, and we believe he will score plenty of goals. Thiago Silva has also proved we have replaced Paolo Maldini with a champion," concluded the chief.
Salvatore Landolina, Goal.com
Well yes, if we get oursleves a LB, we can seriously challenge for the title (by that, I mean winning it, not just coming third or fourth...!) It is relieveing to see that Fiorentina has not outdone us in the market....

Euro Super League
I know this seems to be off topic, but if there is such a league, Milan will be spending more money. So it is related to Transfer, well sort of.
Personally, I am torn. On one hand, it will be a league show casing the best talents in football. On the other hand, it is hurting the National League.
In my opinion this isn't gonna happen in the next couple of years. First off all right now I just don't see alot of fans backing it up. What about the fans from Sampdoria, West Ham and Mallorca? Their money is as good as everyone elses. Ofcourse the big clubs could just say that it's not their problem and do their own thing, but it wouldn't be without complications to freeze out the middle clubs.
But the way I see it, the fact that Perez and Wenger talks about a Euro League, is just so that the big clubs have some leverage over the leagues, in order to avoid to many restrictions. God forbid, imagine if FA ruled out Arsenal's poaching off minors like in Italy? When they keep talking about a Super League they can just say, 'do this and we'll make our own league', it really does put them in a better position.
Also, I really wouldn't like that format, I like the way it is right now thank you very much.

True,Mou wanted to play 4-3-3 so he bought Mancini and Quaresma for around 35 million, and they both flopped very badly,Quaresma has lost everything that made him good, same for Mancini, the 4-3-3 system doesnt work for Inter, still Mou sometimes still wants to trie it out,but it will never work.
Quaresma honestly is pure crap IMO,really bad, everytime i see him play i laugh out hard,he cant get past defenders anymore,he cant do anything,Serie A isnt the type of league for him, thats why.You cant do fancy things like its nothing and get past 3 players with some fancy tricks,La Liga is more suited for Quaresma,he will continue to flop for Inter, same goes for Mancini who i think isnt Inter-material.
Inter have major issues, they arent indestructable anymore, and the other teams know that, they didnt had issues to break down defenses of small teams like Milan and Juve had, they had Ibra who did it all, know they also have to face this kind of problems, who will break the defenses know Ibra has gone???

Abate as a fullback as has been suggested is worth a shot imo. I question his defensive abilities, but we should at least see how it works. He's given his consent and with the modern game using traditional wingers less and less, it will be beneficial for his career if he can make the switch.

Many have said it is a bit of a stupid idea, but i acctually think its a great idea,we need somebody who has the lungs to run up and down the flank for 90 minutes and he fits the profile,he has allot of energy and adds allot on the wing in attack, only in defense it can be a problem, but with Nesta and Silva the damage shoudnt be worse, and he does his defensive job on the midfield perfect,so why couldnt he do it at the fullback position? And he is young and already has played on the wing,so he can adapt.I think he could be the wingback we are looking for, great in attack and solid in defense, his workrate makes up for his limitness.
I say Abate is our new FB,with Zambro at left and Janku at midfield.I think its a great idea!

Once our season gets underway we will have to make do with what we have, and at this point it looks inadequate. I think it's very sad that while Inter and Juve are addressing their areas, we are pulling players from their natural positions. I'm actually on board for using Abate as a full-back, but that's not the point. This is a damning indictment of our president's unwillingness to see this team really shine. Berlusconi is content to let this team finish in the top four as long as he doesn't have to spend. Also, it's hard not to smile wryly when Berlusconi talks about fiscal responsibility. He is a man who is sitting on a massive fortune, allegedly amassed in no small part by bribery, corruption, cheating etc.
Our first XI is good enough to finish amongst the top three, but if any of those select XI go down injured, our whole shape collapses. It is precisely depth that decides a season. Onyewu has been atrocious this pre-season while Oddo looks like a heaving mess. Silva and Nesta are some comfort, but the latter's creaking back is not.
All of these debates are well rehearsed, but I urge you all not to completely let go of your cynicism because generally that is when those in power have carte blanche to do whatever. Milan is the only team in Italy that constantly pules about a lack of money. This constant rehashing of the same argument is designed to align Berlusconi with a country that is in the throes of economic misery. Ever the demagogue, Berlusconi does not miss a chance to perform. This is all theater for the senescent pervert, while it is much more serious for us. This is the same man who on the eve of an election distributed a book detailing his rise from rags to riches. It won him votes then, and this latest stupidity may alienate some Milan ultras, but the larger constituency buys this nonsense to a certain degree. His comments yesterday have me really worried about the future of Milan.
But there is cause for hope...
I have a feeling Ronaldinho will have a very good season, while Nesta-Silva can take us a long way. If we do win something this season, however, it will be in spite of Berlusconi, not because of him.
Also, believe it or not, I do agree with Berlusconi that we must push Dinho up just bit further. He does win a lot of free-kicks, and we have decent free-kick specialists. It's too early to judge Huntelaar, but if our strikers can chip in with 10-12 goals each then we are in good shape. On paper, our strikers can definitely do that!
Forza Milan per sempre!

I think we have a very good team, who thought on this forum that Abate could be a potential starter for us??
We all said he wasnt up to the task and that he only had speed and thats it,but look at him now.
Anyways,if nobody will arrive then yes,Berlu has ****ed us,and IMO he has ****ed us badly for real.
We sold Kaka and replaced him with Huntelaar, who we got on the cheap. And nobody else arrived......thats just a joke Imo.
I'm not ever expecting a huge buying spree from Berlu-he's proved that over the past years he isn't going to splash the cash. I don't mind that we're not looking like Madrid right now, because the world's recession makes it look ridiculous to pay this out.
We've got a decent team. We've got a new coach who wants the team to be the best. He has something to prove. He's hungry. This can translate alot to the team. Sure we have deficincies. Sure we didn't buy the players we think we need. But on the eve of the season, I think we're a top 3 team in Serie A. I think we'll lose in the group stages of the CL (depending on draw we might get to first knock-out). But i'm excited. We're finally going to see some new blood on the pitch and we've needed that for a long time. It's not going to be perfect or pretty at times, but I think we can come together and do it.
Forza Milan
Hmmmmmmm....... Melo didn't play well this game and all of a sudden he is crap, but nevermind Ronnie played like crap the entire summer and now 1 decent game and all of a sudden we can win the scudetto.......
We win 1 game and now everything is good?
..and that Galliani...he talks as if everyone else bought no one and only we bought few new players.
I am satisfied with last night's game too but IMO Diego played much better than Ronnie and that Amauri guy is great.

Abate can start for us... the kid has pep in his step... desire and will...
out of all the top clubs Milan seem to be the least interested in winning or competing in anything this season... we seem to lack ambition. Our summer transfer shows our desire to ONLY survive in in the top half of the table...
Lyon and other smaller clubs than us have addressed their need quite adequately with some good signings... players that milan could afford.. now the big headed two are going to come and tell us FANS a bag of crap....

Pato is good but like you said, if he gets injured, Milan will lose the only one who has speed up front and can dribble pass defenders.
actually if u watched them in 07/08 they were a mess... xavi was average, similar to pirlo last year. Gattuso is in no way past it, i dontm know why everyone says he is..... he showed yesterday how big a competitor ihe is. Probably biggest leader on the pitch in football.
messi top 5? on football manager. No offense till last year he showed an abundance of talent but it hadnt resulted in anything, i mean to be fair i thought sergio aguero was much more impressive in 07/08 than messi.
Puyol? How is he in his prime and pirlo and gattuso past it? They r same age or younger than puyol.
Henry had failed to gel, etoo was often hurt, the defense was poor.
anyway my point was all i really wanted from the mercato was some promising youth brought in.... fullbacks, cm, forward... they probably wouldnt be full time starters but that + a coaching change should have been enough to invigorate our side which was looking stale. so far all i se is thiago silva, abate and maybe huntelaar.... but we r still so thin.

If Serie A is easy Carlo why in 8 years did you only win one league title with Milan.
we should have done better last year but realistically how is Carlo suppose to win league with no CF, kaka out for months, ronaldinho drunk all season and a defense the average age of 35 (maldini 40, favalli 37, zambrotta 32, janku 31)
I cant speak for juve/parma days but at milan his objective was clear, UCL is FIRST PRIORITY... and he never had a deep enough squad to compete on both fronts (you cant expect 11 players to play 50 games!) The 2 years he did have some depth were the calciopoli years, so who knows

Dutchie, what we were trying to say (at least I was) was that Abate should be left in midfield because we don't want to waste him away within a year or two. Just because he has the speed to outrun opponents, doesn't mean that he can run the full 90. As I said before, the quality of crossing for our fullbacks tends to decrease within half to one year. If we put him in a position that will have him bomb up and down the entire line every game, we're going to wear him out really fast. Janku is a prime example of this: great engine, fast pace, great crossing when he was at Udinese (playing left Winger), we bring him in, he has two and a half decent years with us (I attribute this to his engine), and now look at him. It seems like everyone wants to replace him already.
We had a wonderful game of possession football last night against Juve, mostly thanks to him on our right flank. I don't want us to be doing this to someone whom I feel to be a potential Albertini successor.
Not even Maldini could last in our system at leftback, what with the increase in the pace of attacks and counter-attacks these days.
The only two engines that I've ever seen in modern football that have seriously surpassed my expectations have been Cafu and Serginho, its just too bad they're gone now.

I think you're completely off base because you dont consider AGE at all....you have to realize he's 22. He can run alot and should be fine.
Dani Alves, Maicon, Evra all havent seen decline in crossing ability... its cause of there age. They are all under 28. Now consider zambrotta, oddo... in there prime they could play like those 3 i previously listed... perhaps not w/ alves' flair but equally effective... but hey after years of playing and going into your 30s you slow down.
Jankulovski came to milan at 28/9 which is why after a couple years you saw a decline in his engine.
Cafu... he was the total exception. But in general u cant expect a 30+ fb to be able to run the flank. abate is prime age to do it, and has the physique
Gio-mania
18-08-2009, 16:51
Crossing quality is a question of precision in the feet. The feet dont change. What changes is that when you get to the byline after a full pitch sprint as opposed to being fresh while doing it - like a corner.
The decrease in quality of our crosses is due to our players having less stamina and thus being more tired after running down the flank and having to deliver the cross. The reason however, is not what I suspect Ryo thinks it is (or from how I understand his post), that it is because of wear and tear. Or well, it is, but that is because of the natural course of age, as Milano84 said... All our FBs recently have been 30+, but they were quite good back when they first arrived.

So the squad numbers are out:
1 - Nelson Dida
4 - Kaladze
5 - Oguchi Onyewu
7 - Alexandre Pato
8 - Rino Gattuso
9 - Filippo Inzaghi
10 - Clarence Seedorf
11 - Klaas Jan Huntelaar
12 - Christian Abbiati
13 - Alessandro Nesta
15 - Gianluca Zambrotta
16 - Mathieu Flamini
17 - Gianmarco Zigoni
18 - Marek Jankulovski
19 - Giuseppe Favalli
20 - Ignazio Abate
21 - Andrea Pirlo
22 - Marco Borriello
23 - Massimo Ambrosini
25 - Daniele Bonera
30 - Marco Storari
31 - Flavio Roma
33 - Thiago Silva
44 - Massimo Oddo
49 - Davide Di Gennaro
77 - Luca Antonini
80 - Ronaldinho
And what really surprised me was that Cardacio and Viudez have not been given squad numbers... Everyone else is on the list. What's going on with these two players? They didn't seem THAT bad when they played in friendlies earlier in the year.
So, this is our squad of "champions" this year then...
No matter what, this has been a disappointing summer not only for the loss of Kaka, but for the simple reason that B/G are not addressing the weaknesses in the squad. Thiago and Huntelaar are great signings, but what about our wingbacks? Bringing Oddo back is a waste of time and space IMO. What about getting rid of some "deadweights"? Instead, we extend their contracts.
It is quite sad that we cannot even afford to spend 10-15M on a quality fullback. No one is asking for big, expensive signings, just the basics...Hopefully, B/G still have something up their sleeves and prove us all wrong, but for now, this is looking like the squad we have...

This squad wont take us far,the first squad is in my opinion world class with a bunch of hard working players(read: Gattuso,Flamini)and a bunch of creative players(read: Pirlo,Dinho,Seedorf). We have a great attack with Pato and Huntelaar. We have a great goalkeeper in Abbiati, who i assume will be fit sooner then later.
But like everybody said,if one of the players gets injured, its over, and i really mean just one,if Zambro will get injured,we will suddenly see the comeback of....Oddo,if Nesta gets hurt at his back then we will see.....Onyewu.....
We can only get some injuries in midfield,as we have Abate,Ambrosini and maybe Strasser as good backups, but thats it,in attack if we loose Pato we have a BIG problem.
Its funny acctually,if you look at the size of the squad then there are 27 players available, whom 16 are on the bench, but from all of the 16 players nobody is Milan-material,except Ambro,Abate....thats just pathetic,we acctually have 14 players who are deadweight, not just Kala,Favagol(although i like Favalli).

Well some good news from Gazzetta, they say that there is a good chance that De Silvestri will be heading towards us,Oddo doesnt want a Lazio move so Milan have offered Kaladze instead, and Lazio were looking for reinforcements in the back,so Kaladze will be a solution, only the wages are a big obstacle. We will see...

As Berlusconi has built a reputation of being very stubborn, after his announcement that there will be no more signings this summer, i must admit that im not very optimistic about seeing anymore new faces before the start of the season. Depending on your age, you don't need to be given a number at the start of the season (for example: Albertazzi, our so-called next big thing in defence who never played any single minute isn't registered).
For Cardaccio, I'm sure he is too old to be in that case anyway, so that probably means he will be loaned or something like that.

i don't think fabregas was an option for us , we have a similar player , and don't think wenger will let him go for just 35 kk , he's at least on same lvl with pato , wich was quoted at 45-50kk , berlu doesn't pay these amounts nowadays and not on posts we are already covered ( pirlo ) , im happy if he buy at least desilvestri .
Damn, watching Kaka scoring for Real is painful.
They have 2 full very strong squads. And what do we have? lol...
No wonder he moved.
For the guys commenting about the current game between Lyon and Anderlecht for Cissokho, the fact is that Anderlecht is nowhere near any kind of CL level, I don't know what happened to them, they can't play football ... :d33:

Why are we still on about Cissokho. He is not a Milan player and I don't think he will ever be a Milan player after what happened this past summer. The fact is, he is not a Milan Player because of Dental Problem, at least that's what Milan used to back out of the deal. Even if he plays like crap for the rest of his career, as long as he is playing in top flight European football with no injury due to Dental Problem. Milan will always be view as a team who cheated their way out of an official transfer deal.
No journalist will comment on how great Milan did to back out of an overprice player, they will only say that Milan was unethical and unprofessional during Cissohko's transfer.
The point is not how well or bad Cissohko will play for the rest of his career, it should be whether or not the so call Dental Problem will cause Cissohko to cut his career short.
To me, losing Kaka or not signing top stars to replace Kaka, or being in debt or balancing the book is one thing, but to use Dental Problem as a excuse to get out of a official transfer deal is just low. Ofcourse, if this Dental Problem is a for real, then all is forgiven. But until then, Milan MGT acted without any class in this transfer.

The thing is that, I would rather see Milan win the CL or win the league than just beat Real in head to head matches.
This had been going on for awhile, I remember when Milan did not finish well in the league last few seasons, but it seemed like as long as Milan beated Inter and Juve, all is well.
I would have traded in those derby victory for the league and CL any year.

Agreed, for all the pride of beating direct rivals, winning something important is much more satisfying.
I'm hoping at least one player comes within 11 days time. A FB is necessary, and given Di Gennaro's preseason form and now injury, an AM is probably necessary too.

What you said is true, but i think you did not understand the true reason people talk about those victories. After having to accept the fact that team did not win the title, fans had to give themselves something to easy the pain. So they turn their attention to some good games to erase the painful memory of losing the title is all. If given the choice, i think every fan would trade in victories over Inter and Juve for the trophy.

I think we need to digest the fact that this maybe our team for 09/10 but neverthless since its Berlu who said that we have to be content with it, there could be an outside chance of another signing.
Overall i feel we havent done that bad in the summer mercato considering we found a nice replacement for Il capitano in the form of Silva and a much needed hitman in the hunter. Its true we could do with one or two more signings but lets face it.
Besides this team would have the urge to win as most of them havent won anything in the Milan shirt except for a few like Nesta, Rino, Pirlo,Ambro..etc but they always give their 100% when it comes to playing for Milan.
So i m hoping for a good season. Forza Milan

Truth is this is Milan, not a mid table side. It is true that nomatter how good a team is, you can't expect them to win everything every year, but at the very least compete and challenge for something. If the end of the day, Milan came close from winning but still manage to beat all other top teams. Then it is something to cheer about. It is just sad to see Milan hanging on to derby victories as the few positive moments the past year.

It is quite interesting to see that there are teams out there who want Kaladze.
he did shut down C Ronaldo last season in the CL when he was with Porto...
And ?
Don't missunderstand me, I wanted him to come when I saw the news, but when the teeth problems appeared (for real or not, we don't know), I didn't complain like many did here.
Yes he did shut down CR7 last year for his third and fourth games in CL, but didn't Oddo also shut down CR7 when we won against Manchester in 2007 ?! :D
So before being totally disapointed by this player (and happy that he didn't come to Milan) or the contrary, I'll wait for 5-6 months. But so far, after 3 games with Lyon, for me, he didn't show anything special (against the Anderlecht team from yesterday that wasn't able to do more than 2 passes in a row for any reason, even Brocchi would have looked like a WC player and Jankulovski like the best LB of all times :D).

A club is interested by Kaladze and you still want us to potentially cancel the deal by trying to get one of their best players ?? :D
Let's try to sell him 8M if some clubs are really interested by him. Selling Kaladze probably means replacing him, except if Leonardo and our management consider that we would be ok with Nesta, Thiago Silva, Onyewu, Bonera and Favalli ...

I say sell Kaladze to Fio for pretty much any price. 4m is the figure being mentioned, but with all due respect to him I'd be happy with less if it means he's off the books.
We may get De Silvestri then (not really top level), which would add surplus to requirements in FB positions, but some better quality is needed.

I know he still hasn't proved himself for more than half a season, but I guess if he is still rated highly by milan and juventus, he wouldn't be a bad option. even if it's a bit expensive.

But of course................ First priority is still to get two decent, promising center backs...

Not so fast my friend! From the Yahoo live transfer ticker:
Wesley Sneijder is not sure whether he wants to play for Inter. His agent Soren Lerby has told calciomercatonews.com: "I have spoken with Wesley, but at the moment he is indecisive - he doesn't know what he wants yet. He will think about it now and he will decide whether to move to Inter."

if we dont sign a good FB this summer then i think our best option is to attempt to convert abate into a RB... it could work out very well in the long run..

I think we could easily sign one of Real Merda's Dutch players. Only problem is for that to happen we would have to spend money. We showed that players still want to sign for milan Cissokho , Fabiano , Dzeko , Hernanes all would of signed if they could of. I just think that MGT will not spend any more money after the 6.5 million that they have spent. Books are balanced there must be more money left surely.
I'm certain that we'll be buying a full back. The noise regarding Oddo leaving is increasing, and now Kaladze seems to be out the door as well. A full back (left or right) is almost certain to come. The question is who. I'm hoping it's someone that none of us thought of, something out of the blue like Cissokho and Onyewu.
Also, don't be surprised if Milan splash 10+ on a player. The cash is there. They were just waiting for the prices to come down.

Yes, this is our reality, and we're not weak at all. Though Ambro never plays on the right side, so you should put Flamini in that bracket. Also, Seedorf can play on any of the three midfield spot and if Abate is a side-back (and unfortunately I don't see him in any other position), then Jankulovski is another option on the left of the midfield. We should be real and say we have a lot of options there, as long as any of Gattuso, Flamini or Ambro is in the team. Really a handful of choices. Here are some of them:
Gattuso - Pirlo - Flamini;
Seedorf - Pirlo - Ambrosini;
Flamini - Seedorf - Jankulovski;
Gattuso - Ambrosini - Seedorf;
The only drawbacks are that Gattuso can play only on the right (and in center, but I personally can't see him there), Janku only on the left, and Ambro don't play on the right.
I think it's crucial that we find a replacement for Ronaldinho, cause we need Seedorf in the middle.

As BRK said, there is a big possibility that a FB will come.
Even Mr Suma, the director of Milan Channel sounds very positive today that Milan will sign someone instead of Cissoko.
But I cannot say if he is Drenthe or somebody else.

I would take De Silvestri over Grosso any day. But Grosso has "Milan signing" written all over him, when you consider his age and our management's fetish for former "champions." Juve could do us a favour.

First there's a lot of noise about Kaladze leaving and now Oddo has come out to say he'd be willing to move if a good offer came along. This might make it seem ideal to swap Oddo and De Silvestri, but it seems Lotito wants straight cash without any players. However, seeing these two leave would make for a positive change in the squad (as we'd lose some deadweight from the squad) and would open spaces for a signing (probably De Silvestri), maybe two.

Arildonardo, Luis Suarez is a young Uruguayan player who plays as a forward/winger. He was great in Uruguay and at Groningen did well enough to get Ajax's notice, where he's excelled. He's a good player (and has been linked to us as you said), but we probably don't have room for him if I'm honest.

yeah the first team is definitely good enough for champions league, and hopefully not sounding to biased, i am sure we can go and earn a respectable finish. As for keeping this squad for 38 games, i am not so sure...
and i am dying to celebrate a scudetto victory.
Same here, but you gotta wonder whether this team, with the same core of players who haven't won a scudetto and havent demonstrated any form of consistency since 2004-2005 can now win with a new, in-experienced coach?
I was hoping for a few key players and even getting rid of some so-called "champions" to add some degree of newness to the team. But well, as Berlusconi says, this is the team we have, so we all have to hope for the best. The first couple of months of this season will show our potential as either scudetto contenders, UCL spot contenders, Europa Cup contenders, or worse...

To recap, in 10932 posts. Milan had signed Gouch through free transfer, Roma as 3rd GK, T. Silva in Jan and Hunter in a semi package deal that sent Kaka to Real.
Milan also recalled Stoari, Abate, Di Gennaro and Oddo.
Milan also sent Mattioni, Sheva, Kalac and Senderous away
Nesta, Kaladze, Borreillo, Antonini , Gattuso and Bonera back from injury.
CL champ here we go.
It's been reported that Madrid and Inter have agreed upon Sneijder's transfer. The fee will be around 13 million. For a price like that I think we should try to buy him too. I've been admiring him since his Ajax days, and I believe he can be the suitable back-up for Pirlo, Seedorf, Dinho, or even claim one place in the starting 11.

Leo: 'Dinho has wrong attitude'
Friday 21 August, 2009
Leonardo prepares for Saturday’s Serie A debut against Siena with a clear signal to Ronaldinho. “He’s got to get the right attitude it into his head.”
The new Milan Coach has never worked as a tactician before, going from his playing career to television pundit and director for the Rossoneri.
His first problem is getting the most out of Ronaldinho, who President Silvio Berlusconi hails as the focus of the team and has been criticised for excessive partying.
“It is not an issue of being in love with Ronaldinho or not, but the President and I have two different ways of seeing this,” warned Leonardo.
“He knows that he has a gem in his squad and wants it to shine as brightly as possible, but I see Ronaldinho every day and have a different view. I think this is a crucial moment in his career.
“Every day in training he does great things. He needs to be able to do them in a match situation, over and over again, and if we do then we’ll have immense quality and it’ll give the team a great advantage.
“He needs to get the right attitude into his head and consistently do the things he does in training.”
Milan have only won one of their pre-season friendlies, defeating Juventus on penalties after a 1-1 draw in the Trofeo Berlusconi.
“Siena are a good side with an excellent Coach, they know how to change their system and last season put all the big clubs under pressure.
“We have to go out there with the right concentration and send a signal that we are in this race too. It is essential to get a good start.
“There is no point denying it has been a difficult month, but I have grown accustomed to this new job and the players are helping me. I will never say we’ll win this or that trophy. I can only say when Milan steps on to the pitch, it does so looking to win.
“We know Inter have the confidence of the victories behind them and Juventus have strengthened a great deal. Only the results will tell us what we can achieve, but despite everything these lads have won, I still see a marvellous hunger and unity.”
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar must sit out a ban for the opening weekend from his time at Real Madrid, while Nelson Dida, Christian Abbiati, Daniele Bonera and Davide Di Gennaro are injured.
However, Leonardo has left Massimo Oddo and Kakha Kaladze at home.
“I was very clear with Oddo, just as I was with [recently departed goalkeeper Zeljko] Kalac. I told him if he finds a new more suitable club then he should jump at it, because there is already a set situation here.
“We’ll see what happens from here until August 31, but I hope another wide player can be brought in.”
Siena-Milan kicks off on Sunday at 19.45 UK time. It will be LIVE on ESPN and this website.
Milan squad: Perucchini, Roma, Storari, Antonini, Favalli, Jankulovski, Nesta, Onyewu, Thiago Silva, Zambrotta, Abate, Ambrosini, Flamini, Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf, Borriello, Inzaghi, Pato, Ronaldinho

Wow NO Pato,No Tiago Silva,No dinho is the national team...Duga has somemthing against us!!! ON the other hand, we will have rested players .
His decisions with the national team are very surprising... to say the least. Even with Fabiano, I think there are better forwards in other clubs who could start ahead of him. But hey, he has been getting the results so far. So I guess it's justified.

Let me correct you, 1st in the league and also in the final of the UCL and guess what, ACM would win it infront of the Madrid fans and Kaka'.

You know what this whole milan finishing 6th thing is ridiculous. I honestly think that we have a better squad than Napoli , Genoa and Roma. I mean Roma were not great last year and added nothing , Napoli are okay but not better than us , and Genoa lost Milto and Motta and have not replaced them with the same quality player. So in short F U Goal.com everyone knows you are a joke...

Those Serie A predictions from goal.com are the worst article I've read on that site - we'll aside from some ridiculous transfer rumours.
To say that teams like Napoli and Genoa will finish ahead of us is borderline insane. I mean Genoa have lost their two best players from last year, and while Napoli have spend heavily in the market they finished 13th last season. I cannot see them all of a sudden claiming a CL spot.
Btw. if Milan actually finish 6th behind Napoli etc. please dont quote this post to make fun of me...:nervous:

Thiago Silva isn't proven yet to receive a call-up while Dinho has been extremely inconsistent. Pato on the other hand is a mystery. He hasn't done too well when he has played for Brazil but at the same time hasn't been given too many chances and is clearly better than some of the guys who are playing. Story seems quite familiar now I think about it.....

While I do agree that Milan is a stronger club than Napolli, they were doing well until they had a number of injuries last season, and they made some signings of talented players this offseason. They shouldnt be ahead of us, but dont be shocked to see them finish between 4-6

I just don't think they're 'ready', they have so many hugely talented youngsters, but not a lot of experienced players. I'm not saying "you'll win nothing with kids" but still, to me Napoli don't look like reaching the CL.
It seems sneijder rejected inter, but that doesnt meam he will reject Milan, we should offer 20 mil for him and VDV.
with Sneijer we can play a 4-3-3 when dinho is out. with VDV we have a great sub when Dinho isnt performing well, and we have two players who played with huntelaar which can be beneficial in a team chemistry way. and we can allow seedorf to walk.
i think they said Bersconi said that we arent buying anyone else, but this would be a great signing and even better if we do try to convert abate to wb.

Can't believe that Dunga is picking Adriano infront of Pato. That's not just crazy that's insane.
Dunga seriously has something against Pato, it's so obvious. But I really don't mind, Pato always comes back in worse shape after being coached by Dunga anyways.

Agreed. It's quite normal to see some stupid site deliberately twisted the actual words, cutting it here and there then put it in a sentence that is nowhere near its real meaning, but to see a respectable one like football-italia does the same thing is just :depress:

No. If the summer is anything to go by, it would open the door for us to sell Pato.
maybe viola gets him to trade with us for kaladze and Oddo

It says on transfermarketweb.com that Pato and Ronaldinho are being rested (rather than 'snubbed'), aswell as Anderson, Marcelo and Heurelho Gomes (this guy needs a lot of rest :eekani:).
Don't know if this is true, or if it's merely a guess.

Actually, it does mean he would reject Milan.
Real Madrid midfielder Wesley Sneijder has rejected moves to both Manchester United and Internazionale, according to his agent. Soren Lerby told AS: "Sneijder is a Real Madrid player and wants to stay here so he can earn back a first team shirt."
Even if Milan were going to spend the money it would take for Real Madrid to part with him -- which they wouldn't at this time -- the guy has made it clear he wants to stay at Madrid. Hell, he even rejected Manchester United, according to his agent.

Yes, but you're relying on two things:
1) a competent, compassionate owner who cares about this club
2) we would be willing to take a player who is cup-tied.
EDIT: Lotito has denied any De Silvestri to Fiorentina move by calling it "rubbish." (tuttomercato)
However, if it came down to Fiorentina or us, I think Fiorentina would pay more for the player.

When was the last time Pato orDinho took part in a competitive match? Two months ago? Adriano, on the other side, is in good form now, scoring 10 goals in 16 games.
Besides, Brasil is going to face his arch rival Argentina in early September. So I think Dunga did just the right thing not to call up Pato or Dinho

i think it would be short sighted if we didnt sign a talented player because he is cup tied for this season. If we want to compete this season in the league then Vargas would be an ideal LWB for Leo's scheme. Plus he is only 25. and it would help us in the CL this year, because it would keep a player fresher

Well, in reality we could financially compete even with Real Madrid.
But Berlusconi is either trying to prove a point to someone, or the financial crisis affected him strongly.

i think what the mgmt is trying to do is build something the future. say a base ground for financial issues. let us face it even if we kept kaka and spent another 100 mil for transfers we are still inferior to RM, Barca, chelsea, man utd, bayern even liverpool. so let us wait and see the project of our mgmt then we judge. and don't worry since berlu is a president one day soon you are gonna be european champion again :D

That's a good point. Never the less, it really does seem like Dunga has something against Pato, if not for this selection, then at least for his earlier selection in the olympics and for the NT.

Hey, do we still have that one non-EU spot available? Wonder whether there's any reason for that.
Hello people. I havent been at home for a while and I didnt feel like going to internet caffe to write how we did nothing. Anyway Im back just in time for kick off, sorry fLame :)
There is still some time for us to buy one fullback that we need, since Leonardo has finnally said "thank you, ciao!" to Super-Massimo Oddo. I dont know who could even pay for Oddo, maybe Dinamo Zagreb or something like that ( they bought Cufre!! Probably stole him from Galliani... :)).
I havent commented on Huntelaar. Since some commented he is crap player and can play only in Stuttgart, now they are unhappy aguess. I see Huntelaar as a very good CF, but not all classic no.9 players can play in all formations and with all teams. Huntelaar is a player that scores - he does nothing else. In a creative team is a perfect forward as he doesnt miss much, he is a clinical player. Also is classis 4-4-2 teams like old Juve. But in this Milan a player that can create for himself was needed, since we lack mobility due to stupid 3 DM's that we will AGAIN play as it seems, and Dinho who is a clown and not a football player anymore.
A team with Kaka', Yoan, PAto, Pirlo could fit Hunter perfectly, like a younger Pippo. But this team needed a different player. Still, Im not saying he cant play well, he can. But like Trez, he will score or he will be on the pitch for 90min without doing anything most of the time.
As I've said before, the end of great Milan is here as long as Berlusconi runs the club. Money has been taken out and next summer we'll most likely sell more, starting probably with Pato. It is very clear and sad to see knowing your club cant play for titles anymore, but what can we do.
To conclude, this team we have is not capable of winning scudetto or CL. It is very obvious and clear. It has no depht, not enough quality and lacks one world class player that will lead it. Pato is too young and unstabile right now, Dinho cant run.
Players we should have sold are Dinho and Pirlo, we did the opposite. I dont expect anything from this season. Lets hope Im wrong, but this team is unbalanced and is not a serious and good enough mix of 22-24 players that are capably for playing 45 good games per year.

Completely agree on this one... we should have sold Dinho and Pato, and keep Kaka' and Gourcuff... Some young potentials with these players would do wonders this season...
Selling Pato would be no different to selling Kaka or Gourcuff.
On another note, both of my local pay-per-view channels who normally split our Serie A broadcasts between them half-half have, for some reason, decided that neither will broadcast Milan's opening match of the season, whilst doing the Fiore match. The worst thing about it, no one is playing in that time slot anyway. Sign of the times? I'm feeling kinda insulted.

De Silvestri is close to signing for Fiorentina according to various sources (tgcom, milannews).
Whenever an owner vehemently denies a rumour like Lotito did yesterday, you can be sure that it's true.
It would be fitting of our craptastic status currently if Fiorentina reject Oddo and sign De Silvestri.

i hope u meant pirlo not pato.. if it werent for pato we'd have lost today and if it weren't for pato we'd have no REAl young talent.. kaka in 3 or 4 years is done, gourcuff is nothing CLOSE to pato and won't be, he impressed in france for a mediocre team compared to milan, every game he played for milan he was just a mediocre player. you can't base a player on a few good games pato is the future for milan

Interesting. I guess he's basicly telling Oddo to bugger off...
According to la gazzeta dello sport West Ham of Zola has express interest for Oddo and could propose a loan deal for him , even though Milan would prefer to sale the player
I think we're going to get rid of Oddo although id prefer getting rid of kaladze, anyways i think we'll get rid of oddo and end up with one of de silvestri or bale, drenthe would be great
